Therefore to receive a snarky comment from someone whose work I admire is downright disheartening. After all, if someone of your talents refuses to fix the models and textures available and would rather make fun of the attempts to make "lemonade out of lemons". . .why should I bother?

Why I thought their shoes looked like sneakers is because they have the same colour as other cloth parts of the armour and because of the shoe laces. If there is no leather or metal footwear available I can help you with that.

 

And if you don't know why you should bother creating something for the CCC, just create things for the sake of creating them. Creativeness needs an outlet and the end result doesn't matter as much as getting there.

Here are the problems with using the stock models for a medieval prefab (one of the challenges in this month's CCC):

 

1. There are only two leather and two cloth channels.
2. The 1.69 surcoats use leather for the charge and the piping
3. Maille & plate "shoes" were not in use until after the Crusades were over.
4. While maille-only covered feet did appear in the 13th Century, the crusaders were wearing coats-of-plate (AC 6 or higher) and not light maille (AC 4).
5. The shoes that I picked resemble 11th-12th Centuryactual Mediaeval shoes better than the other stock shoes. Buckles on shoes didn't appear until the 13th C. and were not common until the 14th. However, the color presents a problem dues to #1 & # 2 above.

Thus the choice we face with the stock models is to pick between anachronistic shoes (maille & plate) or shoes/boots that match the color of the charge or field.

 

However, one of the talented modelers in our community (such as yourself) could create a "facelift" hak (as you have so adroitly done) which fixes the 1.69 surcoats so that they only use a single leather channel which would then allow. . . *drum roll* . . . leather boots and shoes that don't match the charge on the surcoat. Specifically I suggest removing all of the piping (border) and when there is already a primary charge (dragon, bird, etc.) to remove the secondary charge (vertical stripe).

 

Were you to create such a facelift hak, I have no doubt that you would earn the gratitude of all of us in the community.

 

But if you lack the time to do so as so many of us this holiday season, I can whip up a hak which changes the AC from 4 to 6 (parts_chest.2da) thus changing these surcoats from light maille to coat-of-plates thereby allowing us to use the anachronistic plate & maille sabatons in a not-so-blatantly-anachronistically way. I do however hope that if not yourself, then someone else will fix these modern interpretations and allow us to dress our maille-clad warriors in leather boots/shoes instead of having to choose between the Devil and the deep blue sea.

 

And finally, please forgive my presumption of your refusal to fix the stock models. I didn't ask, I presumed. Would you please create a facelift hak to fix the models?

Syr Biff crushes Syr Dragonlake's heart (literally)!

Biff the understudy gets a lot of grief so he takes it out on Syr Dragonlake.

 

15th Century tabards originally created by Lisa and now in Q. I flipped the dragon tabard texture so that the dragon now faces dexter instead of sinister.

 

Perhaps this corrected tabard can find it's way into Q. . .. One can only hope!

 

Update: 23rd of December, PsteMarie will indeed include this in Q 2.1. I am elated that I have finally contributed, albeit in a tiny miniscule way to Project Q, having been using a boatload of that content since version 1.0. I regret that my skills are not up to fixing the other sinister surcotes but at least I could fix my favourite!

Found the one I thought they were talking about.  All placeable-based: Spinning blades, a water-filling room an Indiana Jones-style boulder and a few more.  I'm not quite sure if the original fully made it over to the Vault, tho.

And now for the 13th Century: Armoured Surcotes of the 7th Crusade

 

Once again, a prefab created entirely in bog standard stock plain vanilla OC NWN. . . except that I modified parts_chest.2da to give these models AC 6 instead of 4. The generic unidentified description:

 

"The Armoured Surcoate (Old Norse Briost Bjorg or  Plata) consisted of large pieces of plate worn over the abdomen (nipple to belt) in the front and kidneys in the back -- usually under the maille but sometimes attached to the surcote. It first appeared in the mid-13th Century and saw a great deal of use during the 7th Crusade."

 

Now the heraldry is pseudo-historic than strictly historic. There were no crusading orders of St. Andrew (patron saint of Scotland) and St. David (Wales) in the 7th Crusade but there might have been. . .!

 

Note the use of the escutcheon (heater shield) and bastard swords which first appeared in this century, along with the barrel or "grete heaume." The half-plate half-maille sabatons (shoes) are anachronisms but is the closest thing to a fully mailled foot I could find. By this time, knights were fully encased or "cap à pied" in iron. The plate knee cops are period by this time but of course NWN has to have highly stylized ones.

 

Also I neglected to give my earlier crusaders cloaks which were most certainly worn throughout all of the crusades, but at last they are here.

Status Update: I'm checking all of the prefabs now and I expect to send off the package tomorrow, Monday Pacific Time. In the meanwhile, here is an all-too-brief episode of the Ambush of the Crusaders' Coalition by the Dragon Lords.

 

Our hero (in the crown) leads a coalition of crusading knights (Templar, Hospitaller, Teutonic, St. Andrew, & St. David) who are ambushed by the Dragon Lords. Sometimes grudges carry over into the Holy Land.

It looks "grym" for our hero! Will his allies come to his aid or will he go down fighting?

 

Alas our hero has fallen! The Dragon Lords study their handiwork and realize that they were the cowards who slew a hero.

 

The Dragon Lords pay their final respect to the fallen hero. 'Tis a pity that such a grudge be carried into the Holy Land for we all know that while the Dragon Lords won the field today, they were lost to the mists of history for there is no record of their participation in the 7th Crusade.

 

NB: All of the content in these screenshots come from plain vanilla bog standard NWN v1.69 with no haks whatsoever. However this prefab will come with a new parts_chest.2da giving these (Armoured Surcotes) models AC 6 instead of 4.

Update: I still expect to package everything up today. Below are the final two screenshots:

I call this the "noble crusaders" shot. In patch 1.69 we were given four large shields with heraldically correct design, three matching surcoats, and one cloak. The helms are a bit off in shape but their tuft at least can match the tincture of the primary heraldic charge. And since these gentlemen have the most complete ensemble in all of standard NWN, I gave them some brass for their secondary metal. Thus in this picture, we have perhaps the most historically inspired armour possible in the base toolset in my opinion.

 

And finally, to finish out the "making lemonade out of lemons" exercise that is effectively this month's theme, I present to you my best attempt at make armor classes 1 through 7 as Mediæval as possible.

 

Now I just have to write up nice descriptions and zip the whole thing up.

Just a pity the base content, 1.69 included, has no realistic means of creating any convincingly Saracen armours! Then you could have the Crusaders fight someone besides each other... not that they didn't spend an awful lot of time fighting each other, of course...

 

Anyway - nice to see someone really exercise a passion with genuine enthusiasm. That's what it should all be about. (Speaking of which, Kali's calling again...)

Status Update: Done, dusted, and submitted! I really want to thank The Amethyst Dragon for putting up with my late submissions and re-submissions. This is my fourth CCC entry (Old School, Masters of the Wild, & Adult) and yet I still can't finish on time. Oh well.

 

At any rate, a late 16th Century/early 17th Century descendant of our 15th Century heroic halberdier has challenged the descendant of Syr Biff the Understudy for a rematch.

 

Success! Honour has been restored to the dynasty! Our hero has demonstrated his puissance . . . or at least the superiority of phosphoric iron armour over that of a mere browned or russeted plate.
