What if the exploration has rare natural catastrophes?

I came across some footage of tornadoes on the web, and started empathizing with the dread of seeing that in real life.

...then I remembered playing Wind Waker as a kid and being scared to death of the vortexes and that big tornado with a frog on a cloud inside it.

Man, if only Bioware could make open-worlds feels as large and naturistic as Nintendo, and especially considering the environmental biohazards in ME1, I'd love to see Andromeda's planetary exploration have nature catastrophes.

Tornadoes, sandstorms and such. ME3's sandstorm on Mars is not the kind I'm talking about. I'm talking about something that has mechanics behind it.

That could be really interesting. Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer had maps that were experiencing extreme weather(sandstorm, whiteout, acid rain) and it made the maps some of the most fun to play on in my opinion.

I remember that. I'm imagining something where you see it on the horizon like the sandstorm on Mars in ME3 but then it actually moves and can interfere with the gameplay. I love games where there are these overwhelming sights in the distance and you can actually get there.

The new Xenoblade Chronichles X for Wii U also evokes some of that.

Forget the weather, I just want to see something in-game that's as legitimately terrifying as encountering a peahat in OoT.

Not even the first time. Every time.

About as scary as meeting the big octo in Wind Waker. but both are more disturbing than Silent Hill.

That's very interesting, like firestorms and things like that.

It would be nice while driving along, an earthquake happens. Now the Mako has to outrun the ground collapsing behind it.

Well, I've always wanted to play something like a hurricane at sea (I can't recall any game that showed just how scary and magnificent the ocean can be), but that's probably not relevant... or is it?

Tornadoes are absolutely terrifying. Even just the "tornado watch" alerts are terrifying because you never know what's going to happen. It's dark, windy, sky is a weird color, raining, and with baseball sized hail. That said, I would like to see something like that in ME:A.

This is a fantastic idea. If anyone hasn't seen Interstellar, there are some good examples there of how natural disasters (well, I suppose if there is no one living there, it is really just "weather") can force your hand (or in our case, change mechanics). As long as they actually made the stakes real, where if you screw up you die, I'm all for this.

Ideas of the top of my head are:

Hurricanes, both as large areas to avoid and eye of the storm for situations.

Lightning storms (the shadow broker dlc was a simple but effective use of this, considering the tech at the time)

Avalanches, making you play in an old school " the back of the screen keeps moving" way. This could also be made slower by using lava rather than snow or a mudslide.

Flooding (the wind waker example earlier was spot on for the cyclone example. Think about the fight with the giant bird for flooding)

Among other things. I would think it would be most effective to be somewhat rare though. I thought about possibly having armor mods to let you navigate bad weather like that, but most of them would feel cheap, even if it were a mako mod. (I don't care that you put on mag boots, a hurricane will still mess you up.)

What extrem conditions can you meet in a fresh new galaxy?

- Unexpected supernovas (remember all the "speed of light" stuff!)

- New and lethal diseases.

- A Jurrassic World without the soda and the chips.

- Asteroïd rain with a chance of end of the world.

- Solar tempest that fry all the onboard electronic.

- 400 km/h wind. All the time.

- Extrem heat difference between night and day (something around 2000°C)

- Oversized Threasher Maw making earthquack while moving underground.

- Aggressive trees and other normally movingless lifeforms.

- Volcanos.

...

Hum... There IS room for a lot of non-weapons related disaster but... will EAware go out of the "kill everybody in sight to win" motto?

That would be amazing. I am liking the solar flare taking out electronics, as well as the asteroids.
