Hi, I'm having a hard time with the melee smashguard, it's ok on gold but I die all the time on platinum.

Any ideas, builds, tips to make it work ?

Fell free to post usefull and entertaining gifs

He definately works as a melee focused build, a bit more challenging than say the Batguard as he's way more squishy.

You can check Invaderones video on him, he played the melee build on Platinum.

This Bwnci guy did a great Melee Focused Build, too.

https://www.youtube....h?v=23qjqi9k8w8

He explains the two different strategies for

mooks: shoot Acolyte (meele stunner) -> Biotic Charge -> Heavy Melee

bosses: shoot Wraith (HVB, OmniBlade) -> Smash -> Cancel with Heavy Melee -> Shoot -> Smash, ...

Sometimes I have Cool-down problems (due to the not working weight glitch) because my Wraith is very low level, but then Smash -> Heavy Melee Cancel -> Heavy Melee -> Smash does the Job quite well.

Geth Scanner works pretty well on this kid, because you can concentrate more on enemies behind the walls.

Yeah, the moment when I die is generally when I smash cancell with the heavy melee, as it keeps me standing in front of the ennemy for a while, so I smash trough walls a lot, but unfortunatly melee doesn't go through walls, but thanks for the vid !

Not quite on topic but the smash bothers can get some funny hate surfs off with charge or lash into light melee because it locks on and has a long animation, you just soar along while casually batoning a mook.

It does. HM (Cerberus Lash) has AoE and hit at a certain distance. I saw melee kills behind the wall.

What's the requirement for the heavy melee to rag doll enemies? Is it to have them on a health bar only?

I like using the light melee on pugs in a cerberus game. Scares the pants of them :D

I think so. Also there should be a ragdoll threshold. Cyonan had some force info compiled. Force is likely the - well - force that influences the ragdoll.

Hi, I'm having a hard time with the melee smashguard

My only advice: Keep track of your target, or that dirty kill-stealing Juggernaut will get credit for it.

I don't think HM goes through walls. May be video evidence could convince me otherwise...

Tbh, melee focused smashguard is not exactly platinum friendly. You can definitely make it work but it's tedious - sure feels that way when I try to melee stuff on platinum. You're better off using smash, charge and weapon as your main modes of attack.

But I always do spec for 5a and 6a on the smashguard. 5a to boost melee damage and 6a is a very good evo. It boosts smash damage by 30% for 20s if you get a HM kill. Stack power amps and mods, get a HM kill, charge to activate power synergy and the smash does a lot of damage (it's armor damage is one of the highest done by powers).

It's better to smash-cancel with dodge even with melee evos in fitness. Lots of enemies just ignore stagger and continue shooting at you. *cough*dragoon*cough*

Spoiler

But smash-cancelling with HM is good in certain scenarios - provides 360 deg. stagger allowing quick escape from tricky situations. Smash-HM cancel is also good against some bosses. Note: you can strafe while smashing. Start the smash while in cover, strafe a bit outside, HM and then roll back into RHA (you shouldn't execute the entire smash-HM animation in the open; that is asking for trouble)

unfortunately I can't record on my PS3.

... an now I'm a little bit unsure.

if you are watching Bwnci video, you can see melee kill feed using his whips trough soft cover, and over barricades.

Unfortunately not trough walls.

Perhaps it only works under certain circumstances, where hit nearby walls due to the AoE. I'll retest, as soon as I play again.

Yeah, that's why they call me slim shady I carry the venom on a melee build to stagger those a**holes  :P

It doesn't hit through walls, like smash does. Not even low cover. I tried to melee a cannibal in a low cover but it just sat there like nothing ever happened.

I watched the video again that you mentioned at the top.

Probably it was the scene at 16:23-16:26 or the one at 15:09?
1) smash can both prime & detonate
2) you have a geth companion that RHA a shot just b4 ur host smash -melee-cancel

Without seeing that weapon shot - it easy to see how one could deduce that smash is a) a primer there with HM instead of b ) detonating a incendiary shot.

..Apart from that Dominolz dies spectacularly often and bunky seems not to be distracted too much by reviving teammates.

A melee build of the Phoenix Vanguard works fine on platinum, so long as you identify your targets correctly. Using the heavy melee after an Acolyte-Charge deals with mooks just fine, you just do it less often in platinum on account of the boss spam. Attack from full, or at least soft-cover, using the string nico_wolf highlighted; and the Praetorian will be the only boss likely to give you any trouble.

The heavy melee does damage through objects, but only the chest-high variety in my experience. If I ever learn more, I'll be sure to share it.

Ok. Did some tests this weekend.
Didn't get a kill trough walls with the melee whips.

And most of the time, it didn't hurt the enemies, even they are right before me.
Really strange. But it heavy melee is still nice for cancelling smash, because at least sometimes it does some extra damage.

Hmmm...lots of great strategies mentioned. As much as i love the phoenix vanguard, i don't touch this guy if i'm playing Plat.

This is basically true of all melee builds, way trickier on plat than gold (for what should be obvious reasons)... At the very least you have to be way more selective about what/when you melee. Also probably a good idea to have a stagger weapon (Venom, GPS, Scorpion, Acolyte, etc.).

Time was way easier, as long as I could stay behind cover for smashing and meleeing the hell out of the wall WITHOUT feeling guilty. -_-

But afterwards it explains, the low score numbers and zero melee kill medals. What a shame.
