Nope, its not far feteched to mistake what is seen so far for another IP.

That argument would be a lot more convincing if we ever heard it from someone who didn't have a pre-existing grudge against the franchise.

That trailer looked plenty Mass Effect-y to me. I don't see how it could have looked Mass Effect-ier. What's it missing?

Reapers, Cerberus, the original cast, the relays.

It has nothing to do with grudges, what little that is known of the game so far its going to be "Mass Effect" in name only.

As someone who loves the franchise, Drone has a point. Until the N7 insignia flashed on the screen, it could have been any number of scifi IPs. The only Mass Effect things about the trailer was the N7 insignia, the pistol the man takes out, and the Omni-Tool/Blade.

True, but those also aren't typically featured by the do a post-Destroy Mass Effect crowd, which tends to be a lot more popular than the do a post-Control or Synthesis ending.

There's been nothing of note said and so I have no reason to be excited.

Really, I'm just on the forums for the memes at this point in time.

The Mass Relays are rebuilt, or at least in the process of being rebuilt, in the Destroy ending though.

This would sell me, if other teaser trailers weren't equally vague on this point, ME3's being a key example. I believe Drone offered "thermal clips" as being distinctly Mass Effect (seriously?) at the time.

Of course, in that scenario, the Reapers and Shepard also appear, but those can't really be counted since any new Mass Effect game was going to exclude those two elements. Which leaves a single husk as being the "Mass Effect" element of the teaser trailer.

The armor is a new design not seen in Mass Effect before.

What HUD are you referring to?

The Krogan is on screen for a blink of an eye and isn't seen clearly. Doesn't even have the usual Krogan armor.

Yeah, I only realized the ME3 teaser trailer was for ME3 when Coats zoomed in with the sniper rifle and I recognized the scope, but that's because I'm used to seeing that. It wasn't until we zoomed out of Big Ben and saw the Reapers while Coats talked that most people realized it was a Mass Effect trailer.

Unless you don't have working eyes, or have never played a Mass Effect game... it looks exactly like a Mass Effect game.

Spoiler

Could be Mass Effect.

Could be Halo.  Planetside.  Crysis

Heck, could be Destiny.

The krogan?  Seriously?

You have to pause the teaser at exactly the right moment to see him

Which I actually didn't mind too much as a teaser.  I guess what I'm getting at is that Mass Effect, spin off or no, certainly wouldn't be the first teaser trailer offered where the "iconic elements" are limited to 1-2 references, tops. Dark Knight teaser trailer also did something similar when it first launched, if I remember correctly.

Dark Knight was ultimately just as watered down and boring as Batman gets though.

As a hardcore Halo player, I really doubt anyone would be tagging that as a Halo trailer.

And there you pretty much summed up all the defining features of the Mass Effect series. Indeed, one of the weaknesses of the trilogy was the fact that it was so concentrated around but a handfull of subjects and themes. After just three games, a bunch comic books and novels the series had practically exhausted itself. Notice how all the comic books more or less center around the same characters organisations and locations. The universe just is solid enough to go without it's distinct objects. After ME3 had ended the universe was practically 'finished', all the major issues of that came up in the previous game had been adressed at that point.

I'm not advocating staying in the Milky Way universe. A reboot in different galaxy is probably the best thing Bioware could have decided, but as some people said it's gonna be Mass effect in name only. About the only substational crossovers from the orginal trilogy would be the various species.

I agree. I was just saying that Drone has a point about there not being much Mass Effect in that Mass Effect: Andromeda trailer.

But it follows all the design conventions of the armor we had in ME2 and ME3. It's very clearly and very characteristically similar. Look at the shoulders and the lights on the back. Look at the helmet and the visor.

By HUD, I'm referring to the console with the galactic/planetary vistas that the character is monitoring before he turns around with the pistol and any lingering uncertainty is removed. It's clearly evocative of the galaxy maps in the past games, and visually identical to scenes from trailers for previous games.

I really, really disagree. I think the armor and the framing alone screams Mass Effect, even without the omnitool and all the other paraphernalia.

Not a hardcore Halo player.  But someone who has played Mass Effect.

I couldn't be sure.

Heck it could have been Starcraft  as far as I could see, if the armor had been bulkier.

Which is pretty big. We have an entire Star Wars universe which testifies to the fact that you can completely alter the villain, characters, and locations by thousands of years and still be considered part of the universe.

It wouldn't be a spin off if it was focusing on all the main elements that Mass Effect focused one.

The lack of Protoss, Zerg, and Terran would also be a pretty big indicator in this regard, though.

Honestly I wouldn't say I'm excited. I am "cautiously optimistic", but as I've said multiple times, I haven't actually been sold on the game yet and there are plenty of things Bioware could do that would result in me deciding to pass on the purchase.
