But it follows all the design conventions of the armor we had in ME2 and ME3. It's very clearly and very characteristically similar. Look at the shoulders and the lights on the back. Look at the helmet and the visor.

By HUD, I'm referring to the console with the galactic/planetary vistas that the character is monitoring before he turns around with the pistol and any lingering uncertainty is removed. It's clearly evocative of the galaxy maps in the past games, and visually identical to scenes from trailers for previous games.

To be perfectly frank, the armor design for humans in Mass Effect isn't that unique. I've seen and read other science fiction franchise have very similar armor designs. Possibly where Bioware got inspiration.

The console didn't match the galaxy map at all. In all three games, the galaxy map never looked like what the one in the trailer did. At the point you make it broad enough that it does again it also looks similar to star maps from several other franchises.

Which is pretty big. We have an entire Star Wars universe which testifies to the fact that you can completely alter the villain, characters, and locations by thousands of years and still be considered part of the universe.

But is the Mass Effect universe strong enough to handle such ramifications? I find that to be extremely questionable and I dare to say no. For it's part Star wars is way out of Mass Effect's league when it comes to brand recognition and marketabilty. Mass Effect is much more fragile and enjoyed and while it enjoyed relative succes it's not on solid ground by far.

Not a hardcore Halo player.  But someone who has played Mass Effect.

I couldn't be sure.

Heck it could have been Starcraft  as far as I could see, if the armor had been bulkier.

I'm not even a Halo player and I could tell the different between that and a Halo trailer

Strong enough? That I can't say. But whether conceptually, a spin-off has to be limited to all those elements listed previously, I think we can safely say no, just given how spin-offs typically function. The intention is to go completely off-base either in terms of style (Halo 3 ODST), setting (Star Wars all around), or protagonist (Better Call Saul).

Especially since in one particular regard at least, the Mako/Exploration is returning, which (at least on here) seems to be a popular request in terms of iconic Mass Effect elements.

I really, really disagree. I think the armor and the framing alone screams Mass Effect, even without the omnitool and all the other paraphernalia.

The armor's about as generic as it gets.   Kinda needs something that says 'This Isn't Generic Shooter #5678

Framing screams Mass Effect?  because Shepard briefly struck a similar pose four years ago in an ME3 teaser?

The lack of Protoss, Zerg, and Terran would also be a pretty big indicator in this regard, though.

Well, like I said, the armor had to be bulkier to really be a Terran marine or firebat.

But those things sprouting out of the ground could have been Protoss buildings being warped in  :D

As a sometimes player of the Halo franchise, I honestly just kind of blur Sci-Fi settings together for the most part and the Andromeda minus the voice-over was pretty recognizable as vaguely Mass Effect-y because of the coloration of the cosmos and a few other details, but it didn't exactly scream ME in the same way Halo games don't scream Halo to me.

More official news will be welcome of course, but since the answer to the question, "game has MAKO?" is yes, I'm excited. Just the fact that it's a shiny and new Mass Effect game is enough to get a little bit excited for it. Just imagine if, instead of Ryder on those dogtags, we had read Verner...

That the armor is similar to armor in in other sci-fi settings is immaterial when it looks (to my eye, at least) identical to the sort of stuff we wore in ME3 and ME2, I think. Unlike Iakus, I don't see the similarities to Dead Space, or Halo, or Crysis - all of which have very distinct styles as well - at all. Same goes for the HUD, and the galaxy map. I think it's all aesthetically so similar to what came before that, especially in the context of our expectations, it's impossible to mistake it for anything else.

In any case, I think I can at least speak for all of us when I say that I hope it's all great. I hope you guys like it in spite of your present misgivings, and I hope I can toot around in the Mako until I die.

I know, which is why I fear that because the Mass Effect series has been so fundamentally centered around relatively few elements, all of which happen to be resolved by the end of the trilogy, that there isn't any room for meaningful continuation. Outside of the races there isn't anything distinct enough that will carry over in a spin-off, not that such a thing is inherently bad. But because of that it is no suprise that the trailer has a generic sci-fi look to it, and could have well been for an entirely differnet sci-fi series.

My ultimate point is that I can understand that some people are hesitant about Mass Effect Andromeda because they know there's going to very little connection between this game and the trilogy.

I'm going to say this, as simply as I possibly can:

There is not a single day that goes by, that I don't think about Mass Effect Andromeda.

I'm excited for Andromeda, not hugely excited though since we still don't know a whole lot about the game.

The Mass Relays immediately come to mind.

As someone who loves the franchise, Drone has a point. Until the N7 insignia flashed on the screen, it could have been any number of scifi IPs. The only Mass Effect things about the trailer was the N7 insignia, the pistol the man takes out, and the Omni-Tool/Blade.

These are things... items, creatures, models, characters, etc. Art design is a different thing. I personally recognized it immediately as Mass Effect, though yes, the N7 confirmed it (because I couldn't believe it COULD be Mass Effect until I saw that). But I guess I take for granted my ability to recognize style. It's a bit like reading a novel without knowing who the author is, but you're able to guess because the author has a unique voice.

Not excited. I'm not really interested in the direction Bioware/EA seems to want to take their games

How did you immediately recognize it as Mass Effect when the first few seconds is staring at just a desert?

I'm interested, despite the ending controversy.

I picked the series up in June, so I never sat around for years with baited breath for the story to be concluded. So the endings are more of a "meh" then a "OMG WFT BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!".

But I can understand that reaction. I remember thinking the same thing when C&C4's endings were posted to YouTube. IMO, they were even worse then ME3s'.

Agreed. ME tech isn't all that unique-looking in the first place. The Reaper stuff was unique-looking, but they're not coming back. The alien races were unique, but we saw a krogan in the trailer, so that's covered.

Note that the ME1 map didn't look much like the one we saw in the trailers either.

I'm still looking for something the trailer could have done but didn't. Show the N7 logo? Oh, wait....

SHow familiar aliens you don't have to pause the trailer and advance frame by frame to see.

How about some biotics?

Mention of some familiar organization?  The Council?  Systems ALliance?  Heck for all everyone loathes it, Cerberus or its logo would have been familiar.

Familiar music, even?  Yeah I know Vigil's theme comes up at the end, but that's in the closing seconds, and the Mass Effect: Andromeda title was already revealed at that point.  With all respect to Johnny Cash, his music doesn't exactly scream "Mass Effect" and Starcraft has already claimed the "western in space" motif.

Take away the glimpse of an N7 logo and the omniblade scene, and this could be just about any random scifi game.  HEck it could have been an add for a new mmo!

One thing DA:I and Bio's marketing crap taught me is to avoid excitement.

I haven't seen enough to get too excited, but its a game in space, with spaceships, and futuristic stuff, so that alone will garner interest from me.
