Actually, you want to know what might get me excited about MEA?  If these questions can be answered to my satisfaction:

How are we getting to Andromeda?  And how was this tech developed?

Who is running the show here?  Who runs this program?

Examples of familiar races part of this expedition and how they earned a seat at the table, so to speak.

When is this set, timeline-wise, from the trilogy?  When did they set out?

Sorry, but looking at a faceless generic soldier hopping around like he's Spider-Man doesn't do it for me.

N7 was specifically a human military designation, a level of proficiency.  So, who's giving these out now that we've left Earth behind permanently?

Spectre status has little or no relevance to SHepard after ME1.  But Spectres were very much a symbol of Council power.  Agents with virtually unlimited discretion and authority who could go do the Council's dirty work.  They were symbols of how sometimes you just have to cut through red tape to see the greater good done, and in how unlimited authority can be abused.  Two of the trilogy's better villains (Saren and Tela Vasir) were Spectres.  Saying Spectres have no relevance outside ME1 is like saying Grey Wardens have no relevance to Thedas outside DAO.

What you're describing is highly accurate to DA. The Grey Wardens aren't all that relevant in the grand scheme of things. You could have a Dragon Age game of little to no Grey Wardens and get by just fine, provided we quit doing blight-related activities.

Only this case, the shift is even less dramatic. Beyond being told that both Shepard and Anderson are N7, what relevance does it have to us? All N7 really means is "best of the best", likewise with Spectre status. I'd argue we're overthinking the problem. N7 can be as simple as prior to taking the Ark, the Systems Alliance gave your PC a task of making sure organics survive. Likewise with Spectre status.

At the end of the day, the only relevance the designation had to us was: high priority missions and likely to involve murdering a lot of people.

I'll agree with Iakus on this one point, if I'm guessing his point correctly, that the council decided to uphold his/her Spectre status just to remind us of the first game.  Outside of that, it really held no special significance.  You could make an argument that in ME3 they tried...   But by then it was too little, too late.  It was all just, "Meh, I'm a Spectre".

Specter is meaningless to me it's not like this is a bond game without being a 00 agent. But they are ditching tons of the setting so for it to keep a mass effect vibe they kind of have to nail what remains. Music is a big one for example if they go off book in music and much of the setting is gone you just have a couple items left.

Now I think a few races, the tech like omni tools and biotics covers that but if they change even those enough it might not feel like mass effect for a lot of people. And for some they might have already gone too far because what draws you into a setting will vary person to person.

Funnily, the game where I felt like a Spectre the most was ME2, when I wasn't even a Spectre.

That's actually true, in a weird kind'a screwed up way.  You run around like an outlaw blowing **** up and killing everyone.   Just like a spectre.

EDIT :  And without Admiral Hackett on your back every two seconds.

I am not interested in being a Spectre in the next game.  It's in knowing the Spectres are out there.  That there is an organization tasked with doing "whatever it takes" to maintain galactic stability and fulfilling the wishes of the Council.

Just as Grey Wardens may not be important to a particular Dragon AGe game, but knowing that the organization exists, and it exists for a purpose, is important to the setting.

Organizations and governments come and go in real life why can't it be the same in fictional worlds without disrupting the setting?

Sure, they come and go.

But do they all go at the same time?  How much of a setting can you take away before it has become something completely different?

These are fair questions. Pretty straightforward and basic. Especially the timeline.

SUre, tehy come ang go.

For a spin off? Quite a bit. I think the ME:A trailer is Mass Effect-esque, but even putting that context aside, it's not exactly uncommon for spin offs to go for a different theme, style, setting, or cast, if not all of the above while retaining fairly mild elements of the setting. And in that context, it's not exactly difficult to retain the technology and the races, given that's mostly all that's left of the original trilogy anyway.

You have to realize that this just isn't healthy, Iakus.

Worth noting that we're all sitting here on the BSN on a Friday night...

As I've said a couple of times, I don't see anything particularly "Mass Effect-esque" in the trailer. Aside from the N7 logo and the omniblade, it could be any generic action game.  Where's the familiar races?  The tech?  All we've got is said omniblade and going through the video like it's the Zapruder film looking for a quick glance at a krogan.  Where are the elements that say "this is Mass Effect"

The N7 day thing was more reminiscent, as at least it had Jennifer Hale voicing Commander Shepard one last time.
