Is Andromeda a "spinoff" on Battlestar Galactica?

I agree with you but at the time I couldn't think of the right word. "Elements" of BG was probably what I was lookig at.

 

 

Yeah, that's much more apropos. But at this point, I feel like it's not so much that ME:A shares certain elements with BSG, it's that games/shows/novels that use the whole "threat that could result in humankind going extinct, thus forcing us to flee our home (or come up with a brilliant way) to avoid imminent destruction" plot collectively share certain similarities/traits.

 

At any rate, my opinion is that reusing a plot/theme/motif is fine. What matters is the writing and the execution - that's what keeps it from getting stale despite having seen similar stories a bazillion times. That's why I liked Seveneves - it's a story about humankind surviving the Earth's imminent destruction, which might have been boring if not for the fact that Neal Stephenson's a good writer an managed to put an interesting spin on things.

 

I just hope that, at the end of the day, the ME:A writers come up with a solid story and solid writing.
