I'd prefer it.
Would you be okay with a permanent default name for each race?

Personally no. I identify my characters by name and Bioware games are games where I create at least 10-20 characters per game.
So having Aravis, Isalath, Saerin, Fen, Kai and Vedis all named Ellana Lavellan would get a bit confusing. Audra, Lavone, Syrie, Marise, Hetja and Perouze would also be harder to identify if they were all named Evelyn Trevelyan. Atashi, Kipper, Kaliesa and Shira would all become Herah Adaar. Cressida and Falin would be least problematic if they were named Malika Cadash.
And maker forbid if all the races shared a name 18 Evelyns and 7 Maxwells, and that's only counting the Inquisitors I load up on a semi regular basis.
So I prefer the novelty of picking my own name rather that hearing the same name over and over.
Double no if they keep the saving system from Inquisition. With the names I can sort of categorize my characters, without the names it would be even more of a pain.

That's a completely correct way of addressing them. Hawke is the eldest child so she gets the last name form of address.
I thought Varric covered it pretty well with Carver, calling him Little Hawke. P!ssed him off to no end and demonstrated the character relationships.
I don't see why we couldn't have a different surname for each race, like DAI, but have those names voiced rather than a title again. I would prefer characters saying my surname to an impersonal title. This limits voice acting to only four versions of recording. After all, DAI called the PC Herald, Herald of Andraste, Inquisitor, Special Snowflake...oh wait maybe the last one was just implied.

Especially with the Inquisitor title, I had a problem. You're able to play a char that doesn't like the title at all. I really would have wished for a 'I have a name!' feature, to enjoy this sort of char to it's fullest.

Man, that must have been even stranger than the first Dragon Age game was for me.

No, I use names to keep tack of saved games but, a fixed friendly nick name or two would be perfect.
One only the LI uses, One for comanions and advisors to use and, a third, slightly embarrassing one for family or those that knew the PC before the game to use.

I've seen a post where Gaider comments on the fact that it's impossible to have the characters address the PC by his/her first name and how awkward it was that Hawke's family name was used as a substitute.
Then he said that one solution would be to remove the option to choose a different name and stick with a default one, but fans most likely wouldn't accept that.
What do you think of the idea?
No, I would not be okay with that.
I identify different characters (and therefore different personalities and playstyles) by their very different names.
Every one of them is an individual being.
And I like they way they are adressing the PC in DA2 or DAI.

What!?! You've been Andraste since before DA:O? That's nuts! Also great character development for you as a poster here! I feel like your name is a million times more interesting now! Very cool!

Heh. Yep - back in February 2000, I started posting fanfiction online, and needed something to call myself, and there was this dictonary of Celtic mythology sitting on my bookshelf ...
It's really just as well that I love the series, because I would have been SO ANNOYED if my adopted name became famous because of some video game I hadn't played or didn't like. I didn't follow the development of DAO all that closely, so I didn't find out until I walked into the chaple of castle Cousland during my first run. It's still slightly surreal to this day - there are people who call me Andraste or 'Draste IRL, so hearing people in Thedas swear by 'my' name will always feel a bit weird.

Plus bespoke names are good for RP and for keeping track of saved characters.

It seems like I would be one of the few people who would agree with this ![]()
But I would definitely agree. Maybe they could make a few option of names, and you pick the one you prefer the most between those.
To be honest, the main name of the character has been pretty much irrelevant since DAO. In DAO you were just "The Warden", in DA2 you were just Hawke (so much that for a period of time I forgot that Hawke wasn't my first name!). And in DAI you are just "Inquisitor" or "Trevelyan/Lavellan" in my case.
At least in DAO you could say "My name is X" - because it was just text.
But now we have voices, so it's weird that all your companions, etc, always have to call you something else because they can't use your name..
Sure it's fine for other NPCs to call you with your title or last name out of respect or because they are not your friends.
But when your friends call you "Inquisitor", to be honest it kills it a bit. Or even worse your LI. Cullen calling you Inquisitor, it sounds bad. I'm not just a title. I'm a person with a name.. Same with Solas, he has to say "my love" - cause that's all he can do. And while I didn't romance others, I'm sure it's the same (Kadan, Amatus, etc).
All these nicknames are made because of this reason.
Why would it be that bad to have a static first name?
I think it would be wonderful to have your LI call you tenderly by your name during affectionate scenes.
Maybe it's just me... But without this choice it feels like it's not that personal...

It's kinda funny how they tried to make it make sense by having Solas say "You also know the burden of a title that all but replaces your name" in Trespasser.

d1ta, I do play FF and have several FF games to include my long time favorite FF1.
FF10 Tidus is similar to my Tidus (always a Elf) I think it was a curse on poor Tidus of FF 10 since they're both not the brightest bulb in the building but, both can wield a sword equally well..

I think it's a shame that fans would even rebel against something like this. Just to have a "label" for their character that does absolutely nothing in most of these games. The only place you even see it is at the top of your character sheet.
If the writers want to get more in-depth with the personal feel of "character to character" interaction.. please let them
Having the first name vocally usable would in some cases make for better (and more appropriate) story dialog. If you really want a label for your character, you can use a middle name or nickname.
Either way, I think the story writing is more important than a text label.

If the protagonist had a fixed first name, I am not sure how I would go about distinguishing Morgan, Abigail, Susannah, Dana and Marian Hawke from each other, whether in my mind or in my spreadsheet. (I had to keep track of all their choices before the Keep came out!) And that's without considering Lucas, Gideon and Michael Hawke.
It would be somewhat less confusing if each race/gender combination had their own fixed first name, but that would take a lot more resources to record, so we'd probably be back with the situation where everyone calls you Inquisitor anyway.

I don't mind forced default names, in fact if it can be used more often rather than the last name/title especially if it's not used at all during the game. Even your closest companions or romanced one are calling you by the last name or title and I find this really annoying, in early relation maybe, but later it makes no sense.
And the best example for the uselessness of the default name is in DA:O in Redcliffe when Ser Perth telling you how he can call you and if you choose the default name option what's his answer ? I'll call you warden, duh... ![]()

Why stop there? Why not add a permanent default appearance to match the permanent default name. That way it'll eliminate any illusion that this character is yours, and it can increase the "story" since characters can comment on your physical features ("Mmmmm... red head," said Bull about everyone but a red-haired Inquisitor) the way they couldn't for "blank slate" protagonists that people bizarrely want to fill in the blanks for so they can roleplay for a roleplaying game. ![]()

No. Choosing a name is an important part of character customization.
I have no problems with being addressed by my last name, or a title/term of endearment.
