So, I guess we're not considering the defusing option.

We've got it under control.

the US is just so vastly different from my European neck of the woods that a lot of things that go on here baffle my mind and it makes me miss my mothership even more.

That's cool. But when I said "many people aspire to be", I meant here. I'm not all that different from many white/black/mexican kids I grew up around. They might have been more racially "monochromatic", and I was a mutt.. but in the end, we're all similar.. and would just call ourselves "American".

The things that actually distinguish me have nothing to do with race.

I myself am a Immigrant although its hard to tell sometimes these days, the accent is muted and only really comes out under the influence of alcohol or when I speak Norwegian.

Though what do you expect after more then a decade and a half here now?

I don't know much about Austria unfortunately. I know a little bit more about Germany.

I'll have you know though that this American is curious. Sounds interesting. ;)

I don't ever want to be American. I'll always be Austrian and nothing else.

it's funny now but not when even the Immigration office thinks I'm from Australia with my passport right in front of them ...  or when I send out mail and I have to observe the post office worker and his country code input ...  <_<

My grandpa was Danish. I'd say he was already American before stepping foot here. He apparently went AWOL when they ported in New Orleans a century ago, then lived on trains with the hobos. Then hid out and eventually end up getting married. When I look at pics of him, he reminds me of some scruffy kid like Dicaprio in Titanic. A free spirit.

That's the European side of my legacy :P

And it comes full circle. The majority group of which I'm not allowed to mention has now begun to experience what it's like to be discriminated against solely because they fit into a specific group. And this is how they react.

How exactly are "straight (cis) white males" a majority group exactly? And what makes people think they've never been discriminated against?

I don't see the big difference. We're both historically founded on many of the same French/Enlightenment ideals. We're both very mixed culturally. We both like rock and roll and hamburgers. :)

Well that was fraking insulting. If you don't know the difference that is because you just ASSUMED Canada and the US were the same. They are not.

Canada was not founded on french/enlightenment ideals, in fact both the American and French revolutions did a whole lot in shaping how Canada would NOT be formed. Canada is very much a British Parliamentary system, very different from either the French or American republics. Canada is not just mixed culturally we embrace multiculturalism vs the US melting pot. In the Greater Vancouver area you will see, Chinese cultural influences, that stretch beyond just the Asian communities in the context of holidays. Seeing white people celebrating the harvest moon or Chinese new year is not anything note worthy because people are encouraged to express their cultural roots openly, this results in exposure and "White" Canadians celebrating a holiday that they are not culturally connected to another example would be Toronto's Caribana festival.

The Canadian value system is closer to Europeans than America. Most of the social issues America is dealing with Canada has already addressed a decade earlier if not a generation earlier. While America talks about Freedom when it talks about governance and that being its foundational virtue, In Canada our government was founded on the principles of Peace, Order and Good Government.

Hell in America you make white Europeans non white minorities. You did it with the Jews, the irish, the Italians and Latin Americans. I mean for frak sake latin America is populated by Spanish descendants. Last time I looked Spain was European and it was filled with WHITE people. Only America could take a bunch of Europeans and say nope sorry you're not white enough to be called Caucasian.

In your current election run RELIGION is actually an issue, we just had an election here in Canada and i can't think of any incident where a Candidates' religion was even asked or addressed.

Yes Canadians and Americans are human so we have much in common but we are not so similar as you think. Culturally we are far closer to Western European nations than we are to the USA.

lol.. Insulting. Really? Here I am extending my hand.. and trying to talk about rock and hamburgers. And you go on a diatribe.

And what's this about me oppressing Jews and the Irish?

I'm a freaking half-Thai kid, with a mom who grew up in a jungle. A second gen immigrant from her side.

All I know is that I grew up with all kinds of kids. And we laughed and loved and skateboarded together. Sorry I fucked up your life. Or something. ;)

as a non US citizen but green card holder, whenever I get asked when/if I want to become a citizen and I say "HELL TO THE NO" I always get this baffled look of disbelief, how could someone not want to be a US American.

I don't ever want to be American. I'll always be Austrian and nothing else.

I can believe it. The assumption that everyone wants to be America is rooted in American exceptionalism there is a large portion of the population that honestly believe they are the best at everything, facts be damned.

In Canada it is common to ask Landed immigrants, the US equivalent would be green card holders, if they will become citizens and you get mixed responses but it is not greeted with disbelief when people say no, because people are attached to their home cultures so it makes perfect sense to want to stay connected to that, but then again Canada is different in the fact that dual citizenship is the norm for new immigrants. We don't require you to denounce your former citizenship to be Canadian. Yet another way Canada is not the USA.

Had one who did that last year too. She was 18, so she was pretty old.

I'm entertaining the idea of moving to Canada to retire there, Austria doesn't believe in dual Citizenship but sometimes they make exceptions but I'm not gonna apply for that exception in order to get US citizenship. I would do it for the Canadian one though. Gotta brush up on my French to make a good impression.

Yes insulting REALLY. I do not want to be associated with people that invade nations on a whim. I do not want to be associated with a nation that thinks mass shootings are just the price of freedom and refuses to control firearms. I do not want to be associated with a nation that has a systematic history of marginalizing immigrants. I do not want to be associated with a nation who has a Candidate for its highest office proudly talking about how Mexicans are criminals and rapist, and wants to put a wall up the keep out the minorities. Yeah so I do find it INSULTING that you ASSUME I am just like an American after I said the last thing I want to be is an American.

It is not my fault that you don't know the history of your own country, in the 19th century there was massive immigration of the Irish to America and it resulted in the Irish being treated like a non white minority. This was repeated with Jewish immigrants, Mexican, Italian and now it has circled back to Latinos again because somehow all of these European stock people were at one time or another not white enough. And this is just giving examples how WHITE people are turned into a non white minority and doesn't even address the racial issues that actual non white people face in teh states. So yeah i am going to mention how your nation that you assumed everyone wants to be associated with has aspects that i find extremely distasteful and want it made clear that i want NOTHING to do with it.

Why is it so hard to believe I don't want to be connected to America? I am not American is it really so hard to believe I could be proud of my own national heritage? Canadians don't fraking travel around the world with our flag proudly displayed because we are hoping people think we are just like Americans. We do it because we are proud of our own nation and we want people to be perfectly clear we are NOT American. And ironically i never hear of Canadians pretending to be Americans when they travel by putting the stars and stripes on their backpacks but i do see Americans doing that with the Canadian flag. So yeah i don't want to be an American and i don't think we are the same and i do take it as an insult that you just assumed these two things.

I am not implying that America or Americans are nothing but the negative i have listed. Your history is filled with positives as well but you made two assumptions based on little or no factual evidence and i am just pointing out that there are a LOT of things that make your nation unattractive to people outside your boarders. And even after I expressed my opinion you still wanted to insist that our nations are pretty much the same when they are not. So to be clear i am offended because it was rude and displayed a level of arrogance that would make Dorian proud.
