I can believe it. The assumption that everyone wants to be America is rooted in American exceptionalism there is a large portion of the population that honestly believe they are the best at everything, facts be damned.

In Canada it is common to ask Landed immigrants, the US equivalent would be green card holders, if they will become citizens and you get mixed responses but it is not greeted with disbelief when people say no, because people are attached to their home cultures so it makes perfect sense to want to stay connected to that, but then again Canada is different in the fact that dual citizenship is the norm for new immigrants. We don't require you to denounce your former citizenship to be Canadian. Yet another way Canada is not the USA.

That had nothing to do with it.

I said people here simply aspire to be American. By that I mean, they simply exist and don't overthink this stuff much. And while I had different racial upbringing than them, I'm no different. We just do things together and people are just people, for the great majority. I had black and Mexican and White and Asian friends growing up... and we were all just generically "American".

And I think Canadians are for the part the same. They're shaped by their diversity and just getting along and general popular culture stuff. The things that distinguish people are more personal and have nothing to do with their countries.

If you want to get mad at that, then go on with your bad self. I'm not going to try to figure it out. And next time, go find a better target instead of unleashing your anger at imperialism at someone with plenty of international roots myself. There's a time and place for everything, but you're way too trigger happy for your own good.

I'm entertaining the idea of moving to Canada to retire there, Austria doesn't believe in dual Citizenship but sometimes they make exceptions but I'm not gonna apply for that exception in order to get US citizenship. I would do it for the Canadian one though. Gotta brush up on my French to make a good impression.

My friend is Austrian from Salzburg, he moved here as a young teen I believe, and he lost his citizenship to Austria when he became a Canadian citizen, hopefully you can retain yours. Being able to speak both official languages will score you "points" on the application. You need a certain number of 'points' in the application to immigrate which isn't all that hard to get as Canada is a country founded on immigration and isn't xenophobic about new immigrants now.  i would suggest looking into the process before you actually want to move to get an idea what is required and to see if there are any hurtles you need to address before you actually want to make the transition.

...I really think Straykat just meant that Americans aspire to Americans, not the whole rest of the world.

I also think this is all angrier than it needs to be. We need more kittens. Or puppies.

Basically, yes. And as for Canadians, they're similar enough that people make themselves at home jumping borders or could if they wanted to. Few could even tell the difference.. or even want to. We are all, if anything, supremely casual about the whole thing. The average American and Canadian is just chillin.

I just think it's a little absurd that I am specifically being targeted for imperialism. It doesn't make me mad.. it's just weird. It's a little more sad if I was a white male and fit all the visual assumptions. Life is going to suck for those people if they get so easily accused of the ills of the world. Me, not so much.

Right that is why Canadians don't do anything special to distinguish ourselves from our Neighbours when we travel. i mean who ever heard of Canadians travelling with the Canadian flag displayed all over their person? oh wait we do. We make sure a frak that people know we are Canadian and not Americans because we are just ever so casual when we travel and don't care if people think we are American. Pffft.  People make themselves at "home" jumping borders in the EU that does not make the French the same as the Dutch or Swedes not to mention teh Germanic peoples.

Canada and the States share a common language and we are both immigrant nations but we are NOT the same. We have different values, we are not as distrustful of our government, Canada is not a religious nation. We don't believe in the melting pot, it is perfectly acceptable for people of different cultures to maintain their culture. We are far more liberal than the US. We don't think it is bad when the state takes care of the least fortunate in our society. Universal health care is viewed as a right by the vast majority of Canadians. 50% of our countries cabinet ministers are women.

Simply because we share a language doesn't actually make us the same. The fact that you are ignorant of the differences doesn't actually mean those differences are non existent. Over 40% of the population of the Greater Vancouver area is of Asian decent, approx. 29% are east Asian and south east Asian, 11% are south Asian and 2% are from the middle east. 42%! can you imagine the third largest US city having these demographics? But it gets even more crazy! over 50% of the population of the greater Vancouver area is a visible minority. That is right WHITE people are a minority. And you know what isn't on the agenda how to deal with racial tensions in the city. It would be hubris for me as a white Canadian to claim racism doesn't exist in the city and it isn't for me to say how minorities feel here, but racial issues are not on the political agenda nor do we get constant news reports of some white cop killing an unarmed minority  like you seem to have in the states. So yeah we ARE different in many fundamental ways. Ask someone from Vancouver BC how they feel about race relations and you have a 50% chance of asking a visible minority which will give a better indication than some white guy like myself giving his opinion about racism in the City.

But sure lets just let opinion overrule facts cuz facts are ever so inconvenient to opinion based arguments.

Gotta love you trying to use the white persecution card in your argument lol. I have to say it is ever so tough for me to be a white straight man in this world. i mean i struggle being part of the most power demographic in history, It is such a burden, being part of the dominate gender of the dominate race and a citizen of the most economically dominate nations in the world aka the G7/8. i mean how can I ever find anyone to represent me in games, literature or politics?  Woe is me whatever will my straight white penis do in these trying times? Pfft don't make me laugh. i'd love to know how I am persecuting white people?

I don't think you're being targeted for imperialism exactly. I think it's just a natural tendency for people to be proud of their particular cultural heritage. Sometimes people get mad at their area being lumped together with other areas in the same country, or even the same region. I would disagree with someone claiming San Francisco is very similar to Los Angeles by virtue of both being Cali, wouldn't you?

Doing it with two different countries is even riskier. Canadians hear the jokes about how they're "America's hat," or "America junior" all the time, but they and their culture disagree. It's not so surprising that some find it extremely irritating.

Especially if, as seems to be the case in this instance, they really dislike America.

Show me one inaccuracy I made and show me how not wanting to be associated with the worse America has to offer is being bigoted or a hate monger.

I said you're weird. I wouldn't call it persecution per se. It would just suck if anyone actually resembles a better target than I. They'd feel guilted a little more into listening. Not all because of what you say, but how much they feel themselves.

In any case, I'd suggest getting a kitten too.

So by saying Canada is not the same as America i am narrow minded in regards to America? Really? So the only way a person could not want to be like America is if they are a bigot? Wow because I have no trouble thinking that the vast majority of people around the world would not want to be Canadian. In fact i assume people want to be associated with their own nations and they don't want to be labelled as the same as a separate nation other than their own. But somehow when America is the one people don't want to be lumped in with, it is motivated by bigotry?

You brought Canada into this first of all. You made that your MO, when I was just talking about growing up with different friends...and how we were all just generic, yet diverse Americans.

I decided to oblige and bring Canada into it because I get along with them too and generally don't see us at each other's throats. I see no Holy War.

And yet you want me to have a war. I refuse. I'll be friends with Canadians instead. Sorry if you don't like. Truly.

No its not your saying that Canada is different that makes you narrow minded, its the sweeping generalizations, oversimplifications and so on a clear refusal to entertain contrary notions that do that.

The rest of your posting is putting words in peoples' mouths and then taking offense to things they never said.

No inaccuracies, but it sounded more like you strongly dislike being associated with America in its entirety, as opposed to just the worst of it.

Which means that some American posters are going to be insulted now...and the cycle continues.

A province north of the United States... It's viewed as a half brother of sorts but relations between the two are fairly good. I mean it's south of the strongest economic and military power in the world.

It also has a placed called Montreal in it, which I recommend visiting for anyone who likes classic European city design.

My idea of a Canadian is not that different from me. I could illustrate it with Keanu Reeves of all people. Canadian, but lived in Hawaii (like me), with Asian and Lebanese roots. Gets more mistaken as a Cali surfer dude. So generic he's loved by all.. even with the hammy acting. :P
