For all the comparisons to DAO, this seems to be like DA2 2.0

The environments, typically.

Which is silly.

The most open zone in DAO is probably the Korcari Wilds, and it's a bunch of interlocking corridors. While there are zones in DAI like that (Emprise), there are also wide open zones (Hissing Wastes) or zones with some large open spaces (Exalted Plains), which DAI never had.

Even the Hinterlands, which is weirdly restrictive, is more open that anything I remember in DAO (which I was playing 10 hours ago, so it's pretty fresh in my mind).

I've seen numerous people compare Inquisition to being closer to DAO than DA2 was. I'm apparently missing something because I feel like this is pretty much like DA2. The biggest thing that Bioware talked about was the "tactical camera" which is far clunkier and less useable than DA2 which in turn was not as good as DAO's. I'm not looking to pick a fight about DAO or DA2 being better! I would just like to know what people believe is closer to DAO than DA2 about Inquisition.

Inquisition is about building an army to battle a massive nation-spanning catastrophe and ends in victory and accolades.

Dragon Age 2 is about a big fish in a small pond who eventually loses pretty much everything.

Inquisition gives you a wide variety of potential character races and backgrounds.

Dragon Age 2 gives you a human with a set background.

The Hinterlands is more restrictive due to its nature as a "Tutorial zone".

They could have eliminated the higher-level segments, but the whole point of encounter zones is that they push the player to explore other areas and come back when they are more powerful, thus adding to the purpose of progression.

Oh  I think you meant geographically restrictive. Aren't all the maps like that though? They're open world but there are clear boundaries you can't cross.

DAI plays like a MMO. DAO or DA2 do not. At all.

I don't think you can compare any of the editions. I think DA2 had the best combat, DAO the best villain, and DAI had the best environments (though I think the un-passable  hills, invisible walls, etc, etc take away from the beauty of the environments).

The only thing tying all of them together is the lore.

The Hissing Wastes has an edge, but I think that's the only boundary.

Emprise has ridges between areas, but they're climbable (and if you find yourself on top of one, you can wander around freely).

The Hinterlands actually had invisible barriers to stop you parkouring over things.

Each one is really different IMO but I did love being able to choose my race again. Hate being limited to human.

*Sighs* Oh I agree!
