(I posted this in the wrong forum to start, so I apologize if you see this twice. I'm a stupid noob.)

So for some reason I thought it would be interesting and somewhat
angsty to go for an ending in which I make an "unhardened" Alistair
king (so that he would break up with my character). I wanted to see if
there would be much drama in the dialogue during the conversation in
which she tries to convince him to sleep with Morrigan, and if there'd
be any regret/whatever during the post coronation dialogue.

I
figured there would be, because on my first play through with this
character (when I made Anora Queen and had Alistair remain a Gray
Warden with me) I had a save file where I did the break up and the
Morrigan conversation just to see how it went.

During THAT
time, I had the option to say "You know I love you, right?" so it
seemed to me that there'd be the potential for some interesting
responses. Interestingly enough, I also had the option to say "I know
we're not friends, but..." which was weird to me.

ANYWAY, the
second time I did the break up, when I went to convince him to take
Morrigan's offer, there was no dialogue options that were romantic at
all. And then all the conversations throughout the rest of the game
were as if we'd never been in a relationship at all.

So my
question is, what gives? Does he just act like "just friends" after the
breakup? Would he have still sacrificed himself had I not done the
ritual? I'm kind of disappointed that I didn't get the angst-ridden
ending I was going for. I'm wondering if something got flagged
differently based on the "I want to talk about us" conversation you can
have with him after the breakup.

If anyone knows, I'm really curious.

Sometimes the romances get bugged. Also, I had a character who at 96 love before breaking up with him triggered the "buddy" ending -- it's very possible you have to be at 100 love. If you don't get, "You know I still love you," when trying to talk him into Morrigan's ritual, then I'm pretty sure he won't do the sacrifice automatically. He will still want to and offer to, but there's no kiss and you can still sacrifice yourself. And you get the "buddy" funeral.

Also, if your approval isn't high enough (I am NOT sure what the magic number is there, but my guess is either 100 OR 91), you'll get the buddy ending.

Ok, I might go back and try this ending again then. I think I have some gifts in reserve just in case I need them. Thanks so much for the answer!
