My first play though of Mass Effect where many years ago, and at the time I was not overly concerned with the dialogue.  This time however, I am more interested in the story and it's charters.  So firstly I find that in most conversations were you have 3 dialogue options, all will give the exact same response ( what a rip-off).

Later I find that in a lot of cases the dialogue is very misleading, such as telling a romanceable character that you think that their feet stink, you hate them, and wish that they would die, results in you asking if they would like to join you for a roll about in bed.  This sort of thing repeats itself often through the story, were, what ever you say has no baring at all on your charters delivery.

Has it always been this broken?

With the three choices, you [usually] have upper for Paragon, middle for neutral, and lower for Renegade.  With this in mind, you should only know one response, not both - i.e you choose Paragon or Renegade or neutral and move on.  It is done this way because the amount of game would get huge as your complexity increases. While we as gamers would like that, the reality is that it's too time consuming and cost intensive with the file sizes, all of the voice acting, etc. - especially for back in those days.   As far as the romance options went, it wasn't too hard to avoid the pitfalls once you knew how to deal with them.  There was more than one play-through when I had Ash and Liara in the comm room and I had to make a choice - even when I had not meant for that situation to happen.

ME2 is the one that had the huge "I think you deserved better than that", or "It's nice to see you smile" which was actually a sneaky hidden ninja romance dialog.  Yes, we all ran into that, you know, I just wanted to talk to Tali, and then I have to tell her no I don't feel that way about you, and I feel bad about it because I did not mean to lead her on.  Or, I just wanted to be nice to Jack, Miranda etc.  Back in the day in the ME2 threads we had a lot of memes and jokes about the Normandy being "The Love Boat."  Once you know the pitfall you can avoid them, and I sometimes would qucksave before talking to a romanceable character just to be safe.

All in all, its not perfect - but you can work with it.  Ahhh, the nights I have spent on the Citadel with Ash or Liara, watching the Destiny Ascension go bye, or danced together in the Flux Casino.  This game will take you to worlds with twin suns, one red, one blue and many other places.  The Galaxy can be a very dangerous place - is the Alliance truly ready for this?

I think the original intention was that they would always have 3 choices, but then either a) the writer got stuck trying to come up with a third choice, or b ) they ran out of time/money. So in the initial pass they came up with the three paraphrases with the intention to fill them in later, but when later came many of the choices ended up just having the same line as one of the others.

For the most part the three choices will not all be the same. There are some notable places that no matter what choice you pick Shepard will say the same thing (such as speaking to Anderson after Eden Prime), but in the vast majority of the cases you will get at least two different lines and in many cases you will get three different lines.

They seem to have changed their approach to dialogue in the later games, probably in response to the fact that many people came to recognize that dialogue options in ME1 often did not actually offer a choice in what Shepard would say. In the later games different dialogue options almost always result in different lines being voiced. I know of only one case in ME2 where Shepard will say the same thing no matter which choice you pick, (when telling Jack you will let her look at the files on Cerberus) but in that case it makes sense since the lie is going to sound as if it were the truth. And I only know of 1 case in ME3 where the two options result in the same voiced line: when telling Anderson you don't want to leave Earth.

One small question and I didn't want to start a whole new thread.
When you speak with your crew, then progress some story, then talk to them some more you get the new dialogue each time. On many occasions squadmates finish their story after the second planet (I complete a lot of assignments before progressing) and I'm tired of Tali saying that 'we're getting near the end ' even before I go to Virmire or Noveria.
What I want to know is how exactly does this progression work? Would they tell me the complete story if I just wait until the end of the game before initiating the first conversation with them? Or does 'three assignments or 1 plot world' rule work even then and I would be stuck without being able to hear them finish their stories? Did anyone make a research on this topic? I want to play my game in a slow pace and I want to be sure that I will get every different dialgue from my teammates.

I've never actually researched the topic but I've played the game so many times I could probably quote most of the dialogue from the game by now.

On games where I was basically doing a speed run I would start dialogue with squadmates much later in the game. All the dialogue options were still available, I would just have to initiate dialogue multiple times in order to progress their story to the point I could do their personal mission.

So from what I can tell the dialogue basically "unlocks" as you progress through the game for most squadmates.

There are some however that are very mission specific. You can miss a lot of dialogue with Kaidan and Ashley if you don't talk to them and ask them their thoughts about the last mission. Also, there is post-mission specific dialogue with Anderson and Udina back on the Citadel that I didn't even know about until I stumbled across it a couple years ago.

If you want to make sure you get as much dialogue as possible talk to Anderson and all your squadmates after every mission. Keep checking in on your squaddies every time you complete a handful of assignments, and don't forget to talk to everyone on the Normandy after you liberate the Normandy from lockdown before proceeding to Ilos,
