Apparently they encountered a human ship trying to activate a dormant relay, which is illegal according to Citadel law for fear of opening a door to a hostile species like the Rachni (Which is how the Rachni Wars started). Being unable to communicate, they opened fire to stop the humans and then invaded to establish a position of dominance from which to dictate terms to what they saw as a reckless species.

They then had their **** promptly kicked in.

If nothing else, humans have a penchant for finding windows when the universe closes doors. There is so much we have yet to discover about our universe - one of those discoveries could potentially lead to another form of FTL in case the warp drive doesn't pan out.

I agree, which is why I find Alcubierres proposal interesting. If "effectively" travelling FTL (because you never actually truly do) is possible, then it would have to be possible within the existing understood rules of physics. You can't just violate a theory as obviously correct as general relativity. So, the sensible place to start looking for a way to do it is by solving the equations for loopholes of sorts. Which he did, and which Einstein himself did with the wormhole.

So, within existing theoretical frameworks exist two independent solutions that do not violate physics. I have no doubt that further solutions exist or further insight could be gleaned as we understand more about the universe, perhaps when we have a correct quantum gravity theory. Interestingly enough, both traversible wormholes and the Alcubierre drive necessitate the existence of "exotic" matter, which we never would have thought of without having an open mind to such things - whether or not it exists is irrelevant.

So, I 100% agree. Closing one's mind is the most assured way to never developing technology that would allow us to effectively travel FTL.

I'd be happy with efficient sublight propulsion

Well if we figure out ftl travel maybe we will figure out a mass effect relay ay lol

So would I, although it would limit us to exploring only our own solar system, with the exception of generation ships.

But it should be totally feasible to develop efficient sublight travel to go from Earth to the outer solar system. Once you have something like that, Earth to Mars or Jupiter would be a cakewalk. We would colonize the whole solar system.

And realistically, this would be a necessary first step for interstellar travel anyways. You can't run before you learn how to walk, and you can't walk before you can crawl.

Well look at it this way if nasa invents ftl travel then this means mass relay tech is plausable. Cause according to me universe ftl travel is based around relay tech.

No doubt.  The fastest spacecraft to date is New Horizons going at the blazing speed of 10 miles/second...which is something like 0.00005% c.  It took 9 years to travel the 3 billion miles to Pluto.  That's not gonna get it done.

I have heard plenty of theories of how to improve existing rocketry from fuel mixtures to engines, ultimately I think we need a revolution in the craft. Nations need to devote money and time to it, colonization of the moon, mars, would require it. I want Mars to be reachable inside a week, not a year. Preferably better eventually, but I'd settle with a week as a goal.

IM sorry but no one on this forum will be alive when that happens. So we wont go to space. You are stuck on this rock.

Well there are plans for colonizing the moon in the 2030s by several nations if they aren't scrapped or put on hold again. Permanent settlements there are the first step to actual colonization of the Solar System. Honestly I think the United States should have gone through with their military programs up there, at the very least there would be something to build off of, as it stands, there is no existing infrastructure, everything has to be shot up into space and then towed to the moon.

Have you ever considered the possibility that indefinite life extension may be discovered way before practical FTL?

I'd assume that people would be living far longer then they are today long before we cracked the paradox that is faster then light travel, we can't even match light speed at present :P

Hey there fellow space travelers. Today I wanted to give you a head's up the research and development team at the Nasa Kennedy Space Center has annouced that FTL Travel is possible in the near future thanks to a revelutionary study done with Negative energy. This science has been proven that using negative energy in space and condensing it as a bubble around whatever is completely still in space will allowing a ship to bend space and travel FTL. Alfa Centaur is 4.3 Light years away. This technology is said to allow us to travel to Alfa Centaur in little as 2 weeks or less. We arn't to far off people. Mass Effect isn't just a scifi game anymore. Few years from now we will really be living the Mass Effect dream and visiting Andromeda someday. I think bioware was in on it =] Aha

Right, we've known for a long time that both FTL travel and time travel would be possible if matter with negative energy density were employed. Only trouble is, matter with negative energy density hasn't been shown to exist. This is just a mathematical model of what could be done if it was.

But imagine the possibilities!

The explosives that could be created!
