Now this is a bigger problem for me since my favorite type of game is the rpg.  But looking at this year, the only triple a rpg on the pc was the witcher 3, and I can't get into that series because of Geralts fugly face.

So I basically had NOTHING this year, NOTHING, I HAD NOTHING !!!!!!

https://www.youtube....KBWtoH93Q#t=22s

... Anyway.

Biowares rpgs seem to be on a 3 year cadence per installment, maybe 4 if it's a bigger retooling.  But they are only juggling two right now.  There is talk about them adding a third, which is great, that would be one big rpg release per year on a staggered 3 year cadence for each property.  But 1 per year is NOT enough.

We need more titles, more worlds, and SOMEONE else needs to step up.  I do have high hopes for cd project reds new work on cyberpunk 2077, so that could be another added, same with more frequent deus ex titles.  But still, we NEED MORE RPGS !

Is there any world you'd like to see explored, non mmo style, that could turn into a big rpg franchise to be mined for years to come?

ps, I want bigger releases in addition to the smaller releases like divinity original sin and pillars of eternity.

It's not as easy as 'here you go, have a AAA game!' These things taking a lot of funding, which is an exhaustible resource - if the backers of a game don't make back enough, they're not going to fund more. Plus they need to be able to pay the people working on it, they don't have an infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of typewriters or anything. To make more games, they'd have to have more studios, and to staff those new studios they'd need money they do not have at this time.

BioWare is full of people who love video games, and probably would love to be putting out one a year, probably more. But logistically, it just can't be done. Not if we want the quality we're used to - yearly releases are possible on a franchise like Assassin's Creed, where they don't have to worry about customizable characters and decision-based storytelling, just giving a straight linear path, achieve these objectives and move on to the next goal. Those aren't RPGs, though. BioWare specializes in RPGs, in campaigns that are the extension of a table-top game genre. And those take time and energy to devote to putting them together. It's about division of resources - do they divide up what they have to put out several games of varying quality that give varying return on investment, or do they stick to putting out games on a roughly sixteen to twenty month cycle that are the best quality they can offer and are likely to make a solid return on the investment, and hopefully plus extra? The BioWare model has regularly been the latter choice, and it clearly works for them.

Much as I love BioWare games, I'd sooner they take that extra time to provide the best possible quality product, even if it does mean that for a year, I don't get a new game from them. Besides, in that year they aren't publishing a new game, they're still putting out new DLCs, new content and additions to the game I already have.

They are working on a new IP set in a contemporary setting. We'll probably hear more after ME:A releases. If you don't consider Fallout 4 a AAA RPG then there is no pleasing you.

Nothing this year?

I guess you haven't play the GotY. Fetchquester 3!

And yes, I have a very good reason to call the thing Fetchquester.

Fallout seems pretty good, though. I mean, I'd get it. Spying too much of a chance for arachnophobia to kick in with some monsters, though.

Yeah Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 did come out....so there you go. Plus Xenoblade Chronicles X is tonight, I believe.

Fetchquester is absolutely worthless (no wonder) and Fallout, as I've mentioned, has far too much a potential to kick my arachnophobia up, becoming one of the games I never play. So, I'm pretty much dry since Inquisition.

I can't see Bioware forcing their usual contrivances into a contemporary setting, at least if it is a realistic contemporary setting.

Be careful what you wish for folks.

I just want more sci-fi RPGs like Mass Effect(as in far future space faring civilizations). It feels as though there really isn't a whole lot there for me to play in that area.

Also espionage style stuff like the Imperial Agent from SWtoR. I'm a sucker for a good spy story.

No I want quality over quantity. I don't want them to pull an Assassins's Creed on us. I want them to take their time and release great games not shallow half-baked products.

On a personal note TW3 is a great game gameplay wise. If you cannot play because you don't like Geralt then you have to wait and be cool with what you have. This year was good with RPGs if you personally don't like them is just your problem.

I agree though that we need in general more sci-fi RPGs set in space.

We've really only got 3 big AAA rpg devs now. Bio, Beth, CDPR. You either deal with it OP or play older rpgs, or non-AAA rpgs.

I never got into the fallout series, there is probably something wrong with me.  I'll pick it up though.  It's strange, I've been playing the elder scrolls games since dagger fall in the 90s and have enjoyed them all, I'd muck around and have a good time, but they were never quite as engrossing as a good rpg more in the style of baldurs gate 2 / kotor / mass effect.  Maybe the new fallout has more than I've experienced in previous elder scrolls games though.

There's a couple of new IPs in the works: Horizon Zero Dawn by Guerilla Games next year, Vampyr by Dontnod in 2017, Cyberpunk 2077 by CDPR in who knows how long.

We need more than 3.  Square Enix needs to branch out on the pc and release non mmo stuff there that is a new rpg franchise.

I'm not a console person so anything limited to those locations is a no go for me.  I know, a self imposed constraint, but one I'm sticking to for the moment.

The only other kind of RPG I would be interested in is another Star Wars RPG. Hopefully this is what Visceral is working on.

The sad and unfortunate truth is, quality rpgs seem to be the domain of Kickstarters nowadays.

Which I guess I can live with, Pillars of Eternity was a plenty big game for me.  And the Shadowrun Returns games are fun.

PoE's been the game with the system I would have liked, with the story I came to despise. Too much foulosophy and many running dunebuggies in the game.

okay, I don't get those terms...my idea of a dunebuggy involves a desert vehicle...

But there's still Shadowrun Returns, Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2...

And hey, Torment: Tides of Numenera next year!  And hopefully The Mandate!

RPGs just aren't as popular as they used to be. The landscape has changed toward the more action all the time types of games. Shorter attention spans now. It's cheaper and easier to just pump out another Shooter.

Bad games, bad Iakus! Nah just kidding. I feel fortunate, i love the AAA titles and the Kickstarter ones. I am pretty much playing RPG's all the time. Either a new one or just replaying one. And this fall has been hectic. Witcher 3 expansion, Enhanced edition of Divinity, Wasteland 2 directors Cut, and now Fallout 4.

There was 3 RPG's nominated for Game of the Year among the AAA titles.
