I'm so over these Mass Effect characters that got so edgy and bad and are really just creepy or weird, it just annoys me. Cool people are people that are just themselves, it's annoying.

 

I was watching some stuff from some old shows I liked, one was called Space Cases and the characters were all pretty entertaining, it's too bad it got cancelled. One of the characters for example had like multiple personalities but then one of her later that personality became like an actual character in the show which was pretty awesome.

 

It also had the smart sarcastic girl that wasn't just being snarky it was like actually funny as well. I'm sorry I don't have more examples of the humor but I did find the intro for it, which shows that exploration in space doesn't have to be all drama all the time, it can be about characters and moments and stuff.

There are lots of other examples like Secret World of Alex Mac was another good one, these were just like fun characters and stuff, nowadays it's all just really depressing and/or boring because like you gotta save the world and everyone's just not funny anymore and it sucks.

 

It wasn't really as good as Space Cases but good examples are in it especially Annie.

 

In ME characters like Kaidan Alenko in the first game were pretty funny, but later on the humor became more vengeful instead of sarcastic or sardonic, even outright hateful

I always thought Kaidan was kinda dull, not Jacob boring, but not terribly interesting.  Granted, I'm not that fond of his voice actor's voice to begin with(He always sounds like he's whispering, or that he's lost his voice), so there's that.

Kaiden is that "nice guy" who got friendzoned alot in highschool. All kaiden needs is a fedora. He is pathetic but not a bad character either.

However, tbh, I did prefer the ME1 Kaidan to the ME3 Kaidan, much more.

 

I do hope the next ME does not take itself too seriously, as well. I don;t want it to be Citadel dlc lighthearted. That's a bit much for an entire game.... I think. But, no, it does not have to be overly dramatic/serious, either.

Kaidan? dafuq? I mean really? Dark? In ME3? Well, the galaxy was on fire. You expect people to be light hearted? I thought ME3 was well written for the most part... until the last 15 minutes and the video game stuff.

Kaidan warm up to FemShep quick and I find him pretty entertaining once he loosened up. Like seriously, how could you take him seriously after he reveal his Asari porn preference.

 

but in the end, he's this grieving angry dude in your ship who try to stay sane. You're with him when he choose to leave his family and friends behind for you... cut him some slack

I liked Kaidan precisely because he was the more normal of the squadmates. Laid back and sexy.    Not a caricature most BW companions turn out to be.

I felt that way about the second game. Very gimmick-y. Garrus turned into "The Archangel", Liara turned into "The Shadow Broker", and then they added a bunch of these impractically-dressed characters such as Samara (once again, The Justicar) and Jack, the  who was introduced as being capable of destroying multiple ATLAS mechs with her biotics under a minute. But then she never does it again. Because it was just flashy theatrics to woo and cajole the PC.

 

Seemed more fitting for a comic where people like that kind of cornball action. And I can see why people would be into it, but it wasn't really what I was expecting after the first game.

 

And honestly, I felt that Kaidan was the character with one of the more realistic progressions, so I'm not sure why you listed him as trying to be "cool". But judging from your examples, it sounds like you think that a character showing any form of internal conflict or deep thought means they're trying to be cool? I personally like it when a characters has multiple sides to them, and I think ME1 and ME3 (especially combined with the Citadel DLC) did a perfectly fine job at balancing the bad and the light-hearted.

The so called 'trying to be cool' factor mostly worked on me.
Like in real life, there are people I like and people I dislike in Mass Effect. But the diversity was good enough for me.

I also don't want that Mass Effect turns into some show that I never heard of. But - as it seems unlike a lot of people around here - I expect nothing and hope I will like the result. And if I don't I'm sure I'd find a game that will suit me more.
