I'm having a theory about the origins of the Dragons.

As we discovered in the trespasser DLC, Fen Harel banished the elven gods into the fade.

My theory is: The ancient dragons are the shells of the elven gods, although not by their full power

Things supporting this theory:

  • The golden city is where the banished elven gods made their home(some ingame sources have hinted that this is an option)
  • Flemmeth could shapeshift into a Dragon
  • The elven gods / dragons, would want to break free from their imprisonment, which is exactly why they tried to manipulate the tevinter magisters into entering the golden city.
  • The Dragons were said to "call" to the tevinters, much like through a dream, suggesting their true location is within the fade
  • There was 9 elven gods(Elgar'nan,Mythal, Falon'Din, Dirthamen, Andruil, Sylaise, June, Ghilan'nain, Fen'Harel).
Since Fen'Harel was the one who banished the others to the fade, and Mythal was murdered, that leaves 7 banished gods, the exact same number of "Old gods / Dragons": Lusacan, Razikale, Urthemiel, Andoral, Toth, Zazikel, Dumat

What remains unanswered in all this, is the taint and darkspawn.
There might be other things that punches holes in this theory? Anyone?

A very interesting theory, although the genders among the gods are wrong. With the elves the 7 gods that were banished had 4 Males, 3 Females while with the Old Gods are 6 Males, 1 Female. So many male dragons like that is interesting in it's own right due to dragon physiology.

Another hole in the theory is you have the forgotten ones, the so called evil gods in the elven pantheon (Only known ones are Anaris, Geldauran, Daern'thal). Who were also tricked by Fen'Harel.

The transforming into a dragon doesn't matter too much due it it being the most powerful creature known to exist to the elves

I highly doubt it is as simple as that, though there surely is some overlap.

The Gods(Evanuris) and their Chosen(High Priest, Second-in-Command?) were the only ones allowed to take the "Sacred Form"(Shapeshift into Dragons), if Fen'Harel/Solas was Mythal's Chosen then the rest of the OG could be the  Chosen of the other Evanuris. Dumah is the Angel of Silence, Vindication(Revenge), and the Stillness of Death. Dumat is the Dragon of Silence, the result of Elgar'nan losing his temper and utterly wrecking whatever pissed him off, making Dumat the Herald of Silence.

Tevinter is basically a "bootleg"/"discount" of the Elvhenan with humans instead of Elves as the #1, why get "bootleg"/"discount" versions of their gods too?
