No, there were definitely people other than slaves. The ancient library describes people that were not slaves, like scholars and nobles and so forth.

We don't know enough about their society to really guess at what it looked like as a whole, but given Bioware's penchant for historical parallels I'm going to guess that the elves will be their Egypt expy.

I am leaning more towards  a Ancient Sumeria expy myself given what little we've seen.

I'm not familiar with Sumerian culture to any meaningful degree. Anything in particular standing out to you?

How the elven god kings come to power and how they struggled with each other reminds me of how kingship seems to have come about in Sumeria. Also each of the Sumurian cities had their own god and they would war with each other for the power of their gods more successful they were at war the more powerful their city's god. The Sumarians also saw themselves and humanity in general as the slaves of the gods living only at their pleasure and whims.

Then there is the fact that the elven civilization is the first and oldest civilization just as Sumer was the oldest and first Civilization.

The answer is yes. They were oppressed too.

They did exist because we see the sentinels in the Temple of Mythal. We saw dagger rogues, 2H warriors, and archers.

To be fair that doesn't say they weren't something akin to Arcane Warriors before.

Just look at Tevintar where there mages haven't been oppressed by law and thus weren't bared from physical/weapon training hence why the battle mage isn't something rare like the Knight Enchanter in the south.

I think it is safe to say that anyone who wasn't one of those ruling elf-mage-god things was oppressed.  It goes hand in hand with a non-democratic system of government.

It's possible they wielded magic alongside their weapons, though I guess we can't know for sure.

Maybe, but my impression is that they weren't mages even back in Elvhenan. It's just that they were able to manipulate things in the Crossroads. It isn't that everyone was a mage, just that everyone could manipulate the magic of the Crossroads dimension. Like Sandal's prophecy about the magic coming back, all of it, then everyone will be like they were. The Fade's magic would simply reflect the mind. Anyone could do it. No mana required.

Also, to the discussion above, Battlemage and Knight Enchanter use magical spells that are geared toward battle. An Arcane Warrior focuses magical energy inward so the mage can wear heavy armor and wield real weapons as any soldier would. It also grants better defenses against melee. So it is different from the other specializations.

Also, I forgot that Andruil is said to have used a bow, and also a spear. So maybe she was a mage and a rogue. Or maybe just a mage who seemed like a rogue. Or maybe just a rogue who could manipulate magical energies of the Fade and Crossroads. Maybe DA4 will feature the evanuris and we'll learn more.
