I recently started Trespasser and noticed Blackwall wasn't with me (just an X on his new name card.).  I've used him exclusively since i obtained him, so I'd like to keep on.  I scoured the web looking for solutions and apparently it is because I didn't finish his inner circle quests.  I reverted to a previous save game, but he doesn't want to talk to me about any quests (even though he has a ! on him in the Skyhold barn.)  I'm fairly certain my reputation with him is pretty high as well.

 

I hope I'm not screwed since i did finish doom upon the world.

 

Edit:  Seems that is the case.  Went back to a save game before final quest and was able to pick up Memories of the Grey.  Sucks though, since I completed The Descent after finishing main quest.  Maybe I should just let him go and go with Cassandra as my tank.... the dude never dies though!

Cassandra is great as a tank too. You can speck her basics the same as Blackwall and, her Templar tree buffs not only her but, the entire party. She is my go to, never say die tank. Craft her some armor that grants 10% chance of walking fortress and, really the only thing she can't do is Line in the Sand, but no big deal, Blessed blades and increased armor for the whole party is better anyway.

 

I have never had Cassandra die, even on nightmare with all trials except fair weather friends active once she has upgraded blessed blades so, were it me, I'd just forget Blackwall this go and use Cassandra.

Cassandra is a fantastic tank, though maybe that depends on how you spec. 

 

I'm not entirely sure based on your post whether you have previously played the game and seen Blackwall's full story unfold. Suffice to say, there are major things which happen to the man after the dual quests have ended (Here Lies/Wicked Hearts). I would imagine that if you don't pursue that quest line, then the game defaults to a state in which he faced his problems without the inquisitor's help (and thus his absence at the winter palace would make sense). This also happens with Iron Bull -- not completing his quest results in a similar outcome to completing it in a specific way. 

 

Regardless, no one by the name of Blackwall appears in Trespasser.

I rarely use Blackwall as a tank, sure he is a good tank, but I prefer Cassandra.

 

With Cassandra, I always give her plus 5 guard on hit with her armor. As for her weapons, shield gets Walking Fortress and her weapon, well it varies on if I am using cheats. Ah who am I kidding; played this game so much I use cheats now. Thus I put 100% masterwork chance.

 

To ensure Cassie uses her tank stuff, I make sure in the shitty tactic setup her tank procs are set to preferred (taunt, group taunt, guard etc.) over her damage attacks. She is meant to take damage and her attacks are secondary.

 

Only time I ever saw Cassie face plant was against a Red Templar Shadow, but that was my fault. I was spacey do to being sleepy.

Thanks for the replies... I went back and did Blackwalls quests, but I did beef up Cassandra and used her for the entire descent dlc (I did worlds better on the Titan with her), and final quest.  Seems I'll be using her from now on anyway!
