I'd heard a lot about this game over the years and now that it's free I literally had no excuse not to try it! I downloaded it on Origin but it won't run at all. Like I double-click it and nothing. I checked the internet but all of the issues people are reporting are steam-related. Any advice at all? I've spent way too many hours on this... :(

For the record, I'm running Windows 7 Professional. Any help would be much appreciated!

Try running the configuration utility. Fix video settings. U can find it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Jade Empire Click on JadeEmpireConfig.Or at least that's where it is on mine but I'm running windows 10. Game crashes all the time on me to and I haven't figured it out yet how to make it stop.

Edit: Also try  https://help.ea.com/...-in-windows-10/ I know u have 7 but this is for people on 10

I can't get the configuration utility to work. It says it's being asked to "terminate in an unusual way" and won't run at all.

I had the same problem with Configuration tool. It is marked for compatibility mode with Windows XP by default, which not only is not needed here, but causes problem. So, right-click the tool, choose compatibility tab and uncheck run in compatibility mode, but keep run as admin checked. Now it should work.

I'm running Windows 10 and Had the same problem, I tried the usual admin stuff (which should not effect me anyway as I have all games etc run from a different drive).

Went around circles then realised there was a log directory, with an error in the file

====================================================
D3D Error Log - Jade Empire
Compile Time: Jan 23 2007 12:55:19
Run Time: 01/25/2016 18:56
====================================================
WinMain.cpp SET #3!!!
CExoFile(English\dialog.tlk): FAILED: The system cannot find the path specified.

CExoFile(dialogF.tlk): FAILED: The system cannot find the file specified.

RenderSystem.ApplySettings: Adapter from settings not found, using default!
RenderSystem.ApplySettings: Display mode from settings not found, using default!

RenderSystem.ApplySettings: ERROR: Device does not support the default display mode, can't run the game!

I check another system which I knew the game was working on (Windows 7) machine and it started with the same set of errors accept for the last one.

"Device does not support the default display mode, can't run the game!"

After checking the JadeEmpire.ini file (found in the Jade Empire game folder)  the RefreshRate=60 where as I knew my screen was running at 75, so I changed that along with a couple of others settings and it now works.. Note the JadeEmpireConfig still errors out however you can make all the changes you need without that.

Settings I changed..

RefreshRate=75

Widescreen=1
ScrW=1920
ScrH=1080
ClampFPS=0

Hope this helps others..

I had this problem.  I would see a blown up section of image, then black screen and that's it.  Mouse wasn't even locked into the program.  But the configuration utility fixed it.  The section of image was the clue.  I adjusted the graphics settings to match my display- actually had to do it 3 times before it would take, as it didn't give me the option for native resolution until the third try- and finally it worked.

I had this problem and found out that disabling origin in game fixed it.

Thanks so much! This worked for me. It's alive!

So I decided to edit this post to clear what I did with the game, in hopes it'll help someone else... I was tearing my hair out...

So... For me, I didn't need to do anything else, but edit the JadeEmpire.ini as described above. No SystemInformation.xml or anything. I just needed to look up my own display settings from the Control Panel (My RefreshRate was 25 or something...) and now it works. I just need to remember to launch origin before trying to launch the game, because origin starts to update itself for some reason otherwise. But it does now run from anywhere, through origin, launcher or by hitting the .exe. Thank you again PoohBear.

The game worked fine for me a few months ago, but i stopped playing cos i was stuck, but tried to load it up yesterday and all i get is 2 images pop up like the game is starting and then just black screen and my only option is quit with task manager

there's been about 3 nvidia driver updates in the last few months, so i'm guessing thats it, it's not the refresh rate in the ini as thats set correct

so is anybody else having problems again ?

I had the same problem as you @Alabamatick. i fixed it by right clicking Jade Empire and going onto the compatibility tab and unticking 'Disable display scaling at high DPI settings'. After i did that it worked fine- hope that helps!
