What is necessary to make a weapon perform some non-standard effect on the target?

There's a weapon in Baldur's Gate 2, the Carsomyr, a +5 Greatsword that, on hit, casts dispel on the target.

I'm thinking about something other than dispel, but wondering what sort of scripts I need to create to make something like this happen?

hey CF,
I think there are two methods to check out. First is tag-based, specific to an item(tag) -- highly customizable because it uses a script, and the scriptname needs suffix "_hc"*

The other is simply a regular itemproperty; the specific spells that show up in the TS are governed by 'iprp_spells.2da' ... iirc.

* eg. "i_<tag>_hc"

I'll take a look at the tag-based method kevL.

The item property stuff... I want to avoid if I can. I already adjusted the sequencers (there are three) for my campaign. I had to go into dialog.tk to edit the descriptions to make them accurate to my changes, along with editing one of the game's default scripts, and after all of that... kind of don't want to go that route again :)

Scripting I'm very comfortable with, so hoping this will be easy then with a tag-based script.

I think you may need to have an "On Hit Cast Spell: Unique Power (onhit)" property on the item for the _hc script to activate.

I have a couple of weapons that cast spells when hitting something.  See my Staff of Entanglement and Holy Mace of Disruption available here.

Thank you Kaldor, I will definitely check those out.

You have a lot of awesome items you have created. I'd be interested in incorporating many of them into my campaign. What kind of divine favor must I procure for permission? :)

There's a number of item scripts here as well, some of which may be useful.

No divine favor asked. They are free to use. A mention in your campaign read-me of what you used would be appreciated. Really the only thing I insist upon is that people do not upload my stuff somewhere else without my approval and do not modify my items and then upload theirs as an enhanced version of mine.  You are free to use them in your campaign though as you wish.

Thanks Kaldor.

I'm sure I'll be snagging a few of your items then, with proper credit. You've built so much stuff... And so much neat stuff. It needs to be used :)
