I just finished the Winter Palace today, hence this post.

I'm a completionist.  Need I say more?

I *know* it's just random loot, but it drives me absolutely insane that I have to leave some doors locked because I don't have enough Halla Statues.  I really have to psyche myself up to keep going through side-quests after finishing WEWH.  It's almost like once I get here, all I want to do is get to the end of the game -- all because of a few locked doors.

Am I alone in this?

And please don't think I'm bashing DAI - I'm not.  Nor do I want this thread to turn into a quest-hate-a-thon.  I'm just curious if this affects others like it does me, or am I just special?  lol

I think it is safe to say I do not care nearly as much about this as you do, but I do always sigh with disappointment upon reaching those locked doors at the end, having already expended hallas reconciling lovers or getting all the caprice coins. It would have been nice if you could at least open one of the two doors without having to bypass the earlier ones, but collecting every halla and still missing two doors is indeed a bit annoying.

Having to choose between mutually exclusive doors would not be that bad, though. Pales in comparison to choosing between mages and templars, for example. I don't mind one locked door.

If you are on PC, there is a mod that changes each door to only require 1 halla statue, so you can open them all. :) I don't remember if it needs to be installed before you start the mission, or maybe just before you open the first door.

Ouchie....sorry about that. :(

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I have it installed. Most folks using it say it works great (those who commented anyway) so I'm actually excited for my next run through the palace.

You're not alone, I'm a completionist too. But not being able to collect all the loot isn't the only part that I find annoying. I'd enjoy the quest a lot more if it weren't so needlessly-convoluted, exploration/loot/getting-your-desired-outcome wise. The plot's mostly fine, but every playthrough after my first I avoided that quest for ages because I just didn't want to go through the tedium of looking at a walkthrough just to get my preferred ending and open all possible remaining doors.

And then there is the timer when exploring. That I could handle on its own, but with everything else it's quite annoying. I think that quest is poorly designed in that regard, because you shouldn't need a walkthrough to get your desired outcome. It should work intuitively, and it sure doesn't.

I have yet to collect all secrets or coins, and I have the game guide! Showing things on a map isn't helpful when it doesn't specify in which section of the mission they are actually going to be there. <_<

Well, it does raise the question of how you were able to stand the rest of the game. You didn't actually go out and find all those mosaic pieces, did you? Shards too?

Can't speak for Tigress but I definitely did. On nightmare, too, which was perhaps more masochistic than I can justify.

I admit I didn't get every mosaic piece (most of them though), but I got all the shards, including the ones in JoH, every playthrough. So 4 times.

...That's a lot of shards.

Locked doors I can't open don't bother me. What does bother me is shards, which I need for the resitances that quest line offers and Mosaic pieces in Astrium caves. I hate having to jump for loot and, I hate doing puzzles. I didn't buy "DA Puzzle land" or "DA Mountain Goat." I bought Dragon Age Inquisition, roleplay, combat, all well and good but there should be an option to rid the game of needing to play mountain goat and, of needing to solve puzzles.

I'm not even much of a completionist but I need all the mosaic pieces. It helps decorate Skyhold after all.

WEWH locked doors on the other hand... well, I don't particularly find DAI loot very exciting, so I was ok with letting a few chests go.

Plus getting the stories from Gatsi for each mosaic you complete is pretty cool!

I also ended up making peace with not getting the loot once I read what was behind each door. However in general, if I'm going to miss loot, I want it to be because I was not sufficiently thorough, not because it's impossible. If the locked doors were due to not getting all the hallas, that'd be fine, but the intentional scarcity is a design choice for which I personally would not have voted.

Yes, and yes to the shards, too.

What of it?  I try to deprive Corystinker of everything it wants, so.....

I don't mind most puzzles, but I agree about the shards, even though I get them. Getting shards as a concept is okay, even if there are an excessive amount of them. What's not okay is that they seem to have been designed for maximum tedium. Like you said, you have do go very out-of-the-way and make either a stupid amount of jumping, or stupidly-precise jumping to get many of them.

The other reason it's so tedious is because of all the backtracking you have to do, since it feels like the oculara are placed at points which guarantee you'll have cover as much ground you already covered as possible. Ugh. I wish they were placed in a manner that was more conducive to exploring rather than retracing steps. Not sure if that was intentional.

Butthurt obsessive completionist signing in. Having to leave doors unopened irks me greatly. I will definitely use that mod mentioned above next time I play.

Missing loot is fine. I am more irritated about the fact that you need some doors for specific outcomes, and can easily ditch others because all you get is a bit of loot. What is worse, you have no clue without walkthroughs or previous experience which door is needed for which ending.

You just gave me a reason to finally go figure out how to get mods installed in DAI.

Yes.  Every time.  And I will not tell you how many playthroughs I've done.  ;)

If you don't take Varric, you don't get everything. So I just dismissed all the missed stuff in this quest as meaningless. Still, I got as much as I could.

Not being able to open all doors does annoy me, that and I can never find all the bloody Caprice coins.

I always get all of the shards and mosaic pieces.  All the bottles on the wall, all the notes on the wastes.  Every time.  All the Astrariums.  All of them.  I finished my NM game before the mosaics were all able to be picked up though.  But I went back and got them before starting trespasser.

I will say I no longer do that stupid Elven puzzle in the Plains because no one ever stays put and it's a needless pain in the arse.  Plus you don't need to do it to get the mosaic.

Really? I've always found selecting "hold position" and then rapidly switching between characters when everyone's in position effective.

But you need it to get one of the Dalish god codex entries! I forget if it's Falon-Din or Dirthamen or what...

Actually that reminds me of the one thing that did get on my completionist nerves: I have no idea how you can get every codex entry.
