I realize there have been a multitude of threads on this topic, but I was unable to find a suggested solution that worked for me.

The game has been randomly (as far as I can tell) crashing to desktop for the past few months. I believe it was after a patch when the Trespasser DLC was released. I did not own the Descent or the Trespasser DLCs when I started getting these crashes.

I crash during combat, during conversations and while just walking around. Many people found their problem was fixed when they disabled the lunge attack for their warriors, but the only warrior I bring with me is Blackwall, and he does not have Lunge and Slash unlocked.

I have tried repairing the game (multiple times), changing to windowed fullscreen mode, turning off v-sync... My video drivers are fully updated.... At this point I am just completely at a loss. I love this game, and I keep trying to go back to it so I can finally get through the story, but I crash about every 10 minutes.

My system specs are:

Windows 7 64bit

Intel Core i-5-3570 CPU @ 3.40GHz

16GB of RAM

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

  turn off the in-game orgins menu; Origin>application settings>Origin In-game>uncheck Origin In>game.

update motherboard/bios, disable "Secure Reboot" in the bios.

turned it off "Enable 3D Vision" for the computer from nvdia panel

disable the LUNGE AND SLASH ability in the behaviour tab

try to play on windowed mode

uninstall your nvidia drivers and re-install any driver 350.05 or later. ANd ONLY install the main driver and physX.

  use windows 10

 and read this post

sorry these are all I know.

I have Origin in-game disabled (forgot to mention that), 3D Vision is disabled and Lunge and Slash is not an ability my companions or my character have.

I have no interest in upgrading to Windows 10, and I'm wary of disabling secure boot just to allow a game to function, but I will try windowed mode and rolling back my drivers.

That post you linked is also very promising so please don't apologize; you've given me fantastic suggestions, thank you!

I USED to have that problem but, it is solved easily by turning MSAA OFF in the game options and, making sure you are in single display mode in the Nvidia control panel.

As for lunge and slash, it's only the Effortless Lunge upgrade that causes a crash and, only if it is used during combat so, simply take the other upgrade for it and, you can use it and, allow the AI to use it as well.

I changed to single display mode in the NVIDIA control panel, changed the game to windowed mode and turned off MSAA and still crashed while simply walking around. My NVIDIA driver is also currently 359.06 (updated 2 days ago), so it's beyond 350.05.

I'm still at such a loss when the game worked completely fine for months.

You may get more help in the technical support forum.

Oh, that's my mistake. When I originally went to the technical support page I didn't scroll down far enough to realize it was a forum, I just thought it was a FAQ with common questions and answers, whoops. Regardless, if I find something that fixes my issue I'll update here just in case it can help someone else in the future.

Update: I tried rolling back my video driver to one that was released before I started having issues (version 345.20) and still crashed. I then tried switching to a later driver with a patch specifically targeting Dragon Age Inquisition bugs (version 350.05). That did not fix it either, so I reinstalled my current driver (version 359.06) without the geforce experience and 3D options and it still crashed.

I have updated DirectX manually, updated visual c++ and last night out of desperation I entirely reinstalled the game and all the DLC.

I am still crashing... I just cannot understand what has changed that would be causing me to crash now, when for months I was able to play the game perfectly without issue. None of my hardware has changed in that time; the only changes I have made are driver updates and the installation of game patches. The only concerning thing I have noticed is that my CPU usage spikes to 85-91% as soon as I launch Dragon Age Inquisition. Could it be shutting down the game when it reaches a percentage in the 90s?

Solution!

I opened the case and gave it a good cleaning and replaced my chassis fan with a better one and the crashes have completely stopped. Thank you all for your suggestions; I finally managed to finish the Descent and I'm loving the game all over again.

  use windows 10

Strange to see someone recommending Windows 10. I am about to roll back to 8.1 due to DAI alone.

I updated to Windows 10 a few days ago. The game is crashing like never before. Pretty much once every 45-60 minutes. The game runs surprisingly smoother, but it is virtually guaranteed to crash during each major slowdown. Also, loading times are way longer, at least twice as long, lasting about 4 minutes or so each.

I use AMD graphics, currently running the 15.11.1 driver. If anyone has experienced similar issues and managed to overcome, please let me know.
