I'm not sure about mods, but if you have either of the DLC you can play them in any Act and he is able to join for the duration of that DLC. He does disappear again after you finish the DLC though.

Thanks but i have only the the game without the DLCs
I think it's stupid that you can not get Carver in the various quests, he is the only one in my opinion has after the best talent and then just the rest of the game is no longer playable is only because it is "locked" when the Templars and times "no" time Hawke has to help.

You could search the Dragon Age Nexus for mods, but the ones I've seen just swap Carver and Bethany in Act I, not keep either of them around for Acts II and III

It's very simple to do, but you'll need the pyGFF editor.
First, make a second save wherever you are in the game. Do nothing in the game, just save exactly where you are into a new slot. Download and extract the pyGFF editor, then run the editor.exe and open up your brand new save. (My Documents/Bioware/Dragon Age 2/Characters is the usual save location) Expand the fourth section down, called SAVEGAME_PARTYLIST, then expand the SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS list. You'll see all your companions listed there. Expand Carver's section and where it says SAVE_GAME_OBJECTACTIVE, change the 0 to a 1. (just click on the line and an editor will open on the bottom panel) Save your altered file and you're done! Carver will now be usable again, though he won't have any lines or party interactions. But be sure to keep Carver out of your party during any missions where you'll run into him again! (Finding Nathaniel if he's a Warden, Best Served Cold, the attack on the city in Act II, and the finale of Act III) I'm not sure if it'll break your game or not, but better safe than sorry. ![]()
You can use this method to reactivate any party members who leave (not die) throughout the game. And this does work if you're playing on either console too, just with a few extra steps.
