I wnt epic banter, and to be able to kill everything. I mainly get things out of gaming from storyline and characters, so that's mostly important to me.
I play as a female elf mage.
I like sarcasm and d*ckish banter.
I don't care what build my character is, if it's not my prefered gaming style then I'll play as one of the other characters. I tend to enjoy just going in and destroying everything.
I want a rogue in my party though for locks and stuff.

Solas
Vivienne
Sera
Your PC as warrior (either S&S, or 2hder)
But honestly, if you want the most out of your story/dialogue, I would advise mixing up the groups you use, for different missions. And be sure to do all the companion quests, that you can. All teams are viable, even if they are not totally balanced (i.e. I have played with three rogues/one mage, two warriors/two rogues, and all mages). Just learn about crafting for best gear, take advantage of the passives in the available class trees, and look for chances to use combos.
Regardless of what you decide to do, have fun!

yeah the one good thing about DAI is it does allow you to be more flexible with your strategies which is something I find DAO dosen't. I find the best strategy for DAO is 1 mage 1 rogue 2 warriors most of the time. Whereas with both DA2 and DAI you can be more flexible depending on the task your doing of course. I still more or less run the same strategy in DAi but at times I've gone with 2 mages and 1 warrior. I've even substituted a warrior for a second rogue on DAI. For example when I was doing my rogue playthrough I had myself doing dual wielding ansd kind of acting as a second warrior alongside either Casssandra or Bull while I brought Varric/Sera along for cover fire and a mage for anything magical. But again it depends on the character your playing and what works best for you.
But as @coldwetnose has said the most importaqnt thing is to have fun.

^This, for a female Dalish mage for banter. Sera/IB/Dorian is about as good as it gets for snarky, vulgar, slapstick banter, particularly if you can arrange for IQ romance IB/IQ dumps IB/IB romances Dorian banter from Sera.Of if you don't mind another mage
Sera
Iron Bull
Dorian
Combat will be tricky, though, particularly at low levels. Sera and IB are kind of squishy at first.
At some point, you'll have to swap Varric for IB and Vivienne for Dorian for the sake of banter. There's also some good Solas/Sera banter, but maybe for another PT.
Varric/Vivienne/Dorian might be better for pure sarcasm and snippery, but I just can't stand Vivienne constantly complaining about Fereldan smelling like dog and her shoes getting muddy.

the key to just going in and destroying everything on nightmare is to craft the best tier 3+ weapons and armour for everyone (Black Emporium schematics etc) for everyone. Also take horn of valour with fortifying blast upgrade on cassandra and set it to preferred in tactics, that way everyone has guard.
other then that, yeah dorian, cassandra, and iron bull or sera have the best dialogue lines. but two warriors in a party is not optimal really, you are better off with 1 warrior, 2 mages one rogue, or 1 warrior, 2 mages 1 rogue most of the time. spec dorian for support with barrier, firewall, spirit mark wisps of the fallen, immolate, revival and whatever else you like (ice armor and ice mine array would be a good choice). One of you has to have static cage though, so either go electric on dorian and take static cage on him instead of firewall or use it yourself.
cassandra should have horn of valour, spell purge, warcry, livid, and whatever else you want.
sera is good both as a dw dagger tempest of archer. and can deal lots of damage. and although she is witty she is a bit flat in terms of personality untill the end dlc.
iron bull is an interesting choice but a bit tricky to get to work because ai on two handed warrior is bad, but with cass in the party to provide the horn of valour and to taunt with war cry it should work. it even works for cole who is very squishy but is a beast at doing dmage and has mark of death - great for bosses and dragons. but if you and dorian both have barrier to cast from and cass has horn of valour with that guard upgrade you have your defenses covered.

Regardless of my PC's class, I always take one rogue, one mage, one warrior. (I know: boring!) I like balance. As to personalities, Varric works well with everyone as does Casandra, Dorian, and Iron Bull most of the time.
Combos that I avoid: Blackwall and Sera -- too much anti-nobility banter; Iron Bull and Solas tend to get into it over the Qun. Vivienne can be annoying with almost anyone, although sometimes that's a needed break from teams that are too "lovey-dovey."

The last couple of play throughs I've done have been solo runs, but before that I went with Iron Bull, Dorian, and Varric for general play like exploring, rifting, etc, and for bosses I switched Dorian out for Blackwall (I have used Cassandra, but I find that I prefer Blackwall's banter to hers, and To the Death is just an amazing skill). I build Dorian as an electromancer for crowd control and maximizing the dps from Varric's archer artificer build (Static Cage + AA = sooooo much damage). Not to mention the fact that because he's constantly stunning enemies, your warrior(s) will get the damage bonus from Coup De Grace, which is a nice bonus. Blackwall is usually just a straight tank. No DPS, just a lot of utility to make him unkillable. Varric is your basic Archer Artificer, albeit with a couple of skills switched out because the AI either can't use, or just plain sucks with them. The build I use for Iron Bull on the other hand seems to be atypical, but I really enjoy it and find that it makes him extremely potent as a DPS warrior, even on nightmare+all trials, so I'm going to indulge myself and go into a bit more detail on that.
Kitty's Collar Iron Bull/Reaver:
Reaver Tree - Ring of Pain + Painbringer Upgrade, Blood Frenzy, Terrifying Fury, Devour + Lifeblood Upgrade, Dragon-Rage + Leashed Fury Upgrade
W+S Tree - Shield Wall, Bear Mauls the Wolves, Warrior's Resolve
2Handed Tree - Block and Slash, Flow of Battle
Battlemaster Tree - Grappling Chain + Give Them the Boot Upgrade, Crippling Blows, Combat Roll + Coming Through Upgrade, Coup De Grace, Horn of Valour + Fortifying Blast Upgrade
Vanguard Tree - War Cry, Charging Bull + Light On Your Feet Passive, It'll Cost You, Livid + Endless Strength Upgrade
Skill Wheel: Ring of Pain, Devour (Favourite), Dragon-Rage, Grappling Chain, Combat Roll, Charging Bull, Livid, Rampage, Horn of Valour (Favourite)
As for why I call the build "Kitty's Collar Iron Bull", it's because, quite simply, I equip IB with the Kitty's Collar pendant and focus on having the rest of his equips buff his DPS, total health, increased healing, etc etc (and try to avoid resistance buffs because they'll hurt this build and waste crafting slots). The pendant will increase the amount of damage he takes considerably, so he'll be able to take full advantage of the Reaver skill tree since his health will usually be super low, and he'll also get enough extra stamina from Warrior's Resolve that even with Ring of Pain constantly draining him he'll rarely be short (especially if you equip a Great Bear sigil on his armour). The other obvious benefit/reason for using this pendant on IB is that it will also probably revive him if/when he does die, so you don't have to worry about him running into the middle of a giant mob and getting himself killed, since even if he does there's a 75% chance that he'll just get back up again. That being said, if you're relying on the AI to control your reaver then remember to only let him use Dragon-Rage with the Leashed Fury upgrade. If he uses the basic skill, or the other upgrade, and happens to kill himself with it, Kitty's Collar can't revive him. And above all else you NEED the Bear Mauls the Wolves passive. The goal with this build is to keep IB's health low so his Reaver skills can shine, but it kind of defeats the purpose if a rogue can easily one shot you with flanking damage, even at full health. That's where BMtW will (usually) save you.
I know that you didn't ask for build specifics, but I reeeeeeally like this setup, both for a player controlled Reaver as well as for AI so I'm posting it anyway.
Let me know if you'd like my setups for any other characters, AI or player controlled. ![]()
Oh, and I enjoy the banter between Varric and Dorian/IB more than I do between Sera and them. I mean I do like Sera, but I *prefer* Varric. I find that Sera is more bratty funny, whereas Varric is more clever funny. Ultimately they're also both pretty strong, so which one you should use all comes down to which of their personalities you prefer. ![]()
