I played mass effect on PS3 & I love the series but during my time on mass effect 2 & 3, especially on ME3s multiplayer I just couldn't understand why the X button literally done everything!!

X- to stick to cover.
X+movement- to roll into cover.
Double Tap X- Quick vault.
Tap X+Left analog right or left- to roll or dodge.
Hold Left analog forward+X- to vault over cover.
Hold Left analog forward+X at the edge of cover to sprint out of cover.
Hold Left stick left or right+X- to move from cover to cover.
X- to accept an objective/use item (action button).
Hold X- to revive fallen buddies.
Hold X- to run.
Tap X- to prolong death when down.

Now obviously most these action happen at different times so for the most part it's ok that X does different things....But in multiplayer especially its bad!! Here are the reasons why...

-your buddy has died & you're trying to revive him by holding X but you are near a cover point so instead of reviving your buddy you keep sticking to cover!

-you want to start the objective as soon as possible before enemies are near your position & instead your character sticks to cover!

BIGGEST PROBLEM!

-when you run with your left thumb on the left analog & your right thumb holding the X button it's impossible to aim at where you're going? For the life of me I cannot understand this design choice? why is it not L3? a simple click of L3 would resolve this major issue! X does not have to be the only button to do 10 different things!? all L3 does is move you 90degrees around cover & tbh most the time the cover doesn't have 90degrees of cover to move around? A lot of the cover is small & moving around it in that way will get you shot! L3 can be the sprint button & 90degree cover anyways because they would be used at different times!

Please bioware read this thread & think about what I've said! The controls are so important to gameplay & player satisfaction! The game must be tight, responsive & you have to be able to sprint & aim at the same time!!!! you guys are intelligent enough to work this out!!

Thanks for hearing me out!

Regards Costa

So many exclamation marks...

I enjoyed your enthusiasm and I mostly agree with your point. Some of the controls were clunky and I hope they can give them a little more finesse this time.

Thanks for being polite as well as passionate about the subject. ;)

Oh and welcome to the BSN. It used to stand for the BioWare Social Network, which was the former name for the forums. The forums have changed, and the name is gone, but the BSN tag just stuck. We're a bit of a crazy bunch, but it's not a bad place to hang out. There is a lot of very smart and very stubborn folks around, but most of them are alright.

I fully agree with you. The spacebar on the PC version being bound to everything gave me more than one Game Over in ME2 and ME3. You mean to duck, and you climb over because you accidentally hit the spacebar one to many times. You duck when you mean to examine an item. Pretty much all of the same issues you described. Really, both PC and console need ways to remap those keys. Even Angry Joe hated the fact that spacebar (or x/a/b) did everything.

I just hope it has native controller support at launch and that we can map additional powers to the paddles of the Elite controller.

From the State of the Industry video that BioWare did a few years back. One of the devs (feeling too sick to look up which one at the moment) said, "Press a button and something awesome happens."

Edit: Ninja'd. ;)

If even console users find this irritating, could you imagine how pc users feel about it? having 100+ keys on a keyboard plus some extra buttons here and there on the mouse...

Guess they couldn't afford to spend their budget in such trivialities as a good interface.

Oh, and I don't blame just BW for this, has anyone played Fallout 4 on PC? geez, who the fu** though it was a good idea having "bash" and "throw explosives" mapped to the same key.

That's why you roll. Rolling to the side is the Banshee's worst nightmare. Except on Platinum, where Banshees seem to be able to grab you from any angle and from absurd distances. NOT THAT I'M BITTER OR ANYTHING.

Steel Series World of Warcraft: Cataclysm mouse. 14 buttons of awesomeness. You'll never have to move your hand from WASD ever again.

Half of Fallouts controls have 2 functions, one on tap one on hold. It's not that bad. What is way worse is how different menus work. Sometimes it's E accept, R cancel and sometimes it's R accept Tab cancel, stuff like that. Not to mention that it works COMPLETELY different than in F3/FNV.

That's... Actually true. And I'm one of those insane people on BSN, too. Sense I happen to like Skyrim over DA, which is insane.

Okay, I'll bite - and that initial segment actually looks pretty accurate.

That Shepard sticks to any cover she gets anywhere near is a huge problem, as is being unable to leave cover unless you do everything just exactly right. I can't count the number of times Shepard has gotten killed when standing right next to cover with me madly pounding on the button. Apparently, I didn't have the camera pointed exactly the right direction. I've never quite understood the reason for the stickiness - or why the camera direction matters when the character is standing right next to cover and no other movement input is happening.

Leap over cover you wanted to crouch behind? Check. That's another source of multiple game overs.

Also - the games don't seem to recognize controller input that starts before it is ready to act on it. For example, if you start pushing the stick to move Shepard when Shepard is doing some oh-I-just-got-hit-with-a-rocket animation, you need to release the stick and then push it again after the animation is complete. Not helpful.

I'd find the combat in ME2 & ME3 a whole lot more enjoyable if I had better control over my character. Might be more interested in MP, too.

Especially if he had the temerity to express some genuine enthusiasm for something because he thought it looked cool. The entire internet knows that all enthusiasm must be thoroughly worn away until only snark and pessimism remains.

Evidently, enthusiasm isn't allowed but neither apparently are jokes.
