Just curious, do you have favorite items/armor sets that you like to give to specific party members?

My usual choice is:

Warden - Wades Dragonbone, Starfang, Topsider's Honour

Alistair: Juggernaut - Cailan's sword and shield.

Sten: Effort + Duty, Sword of the Beresaad

Oghren: Armor of the Legion

Morrigan: Robes of Possession, Winter's Breath

Zevran: Wades Drake Scale, Olaf's Cheese Knife

Leliana: Battledress of the Provocateur, Marjolaine's Recurve

Wynn: Vestments of the Seer, Enchanter's Arming Cap

The Grey Warden-themed Effort set probably seems an odd set to give to Sten, but to be honest he looks absolutely amazing, and utterly badass in it.

It's tough because I really do like using the unique armor sets on companions, but there are more sets than there are companions.

I like to give Alistair the Warden Commander set from the Warden's Keep DLC, then switch him to Cailan's armor before the Landsmeet. We're trying to present him as regally as possible to sway the vote.

I want to keep Morrigan's iconic look, so I'll use whatever robes are the best until we get to her personal quest and she gets her upgraded robes.

Wynne, frankly, looks stupid in any of the DAO mage robes, so it doesn't matter. I try to remain with the full robes instead of showing her bare arms and legs like some of the strumpet-robe designs.

Oghren gets the Legion of the Dead armor. Hey, that's even his default starting armor in Awakening.

I usually have Sten use the Juggernaut armor, since it's heavy armor and easier to obtain than the other sets out there (Duty or Effort).

Zevran gets the ancient elf armor. But then it's annoying when he has the companion-specific gloves and boots, so I tend to ignore those so he keeps the armor set bonus.

Leliana gets any of the leather drake skin armors from Wade. There aren't lots of iconic light armor sets in the base game. Battledress of the Provacateur when she meets the requirements.

For the Warden, I'll typically go with Wade's stuff to match the class I'm playing.

For weapons, I'm not as picky since they're less visible and more about actual damage and effects. But lore wise, Alistair gets Cailan's arms, Leliana gets Marjolaine's Recurve, Morrigan gets some frost-based staff, Sten keeps his personal sword.

Hmm Cailan's Armor for Alistair before the Landsmeet? I really like that idea, why didn't I think of it myself? It makes sense to have him presented in such an obviously regal manner.

The list I gave was generally presented from a gameplay/general combat perspective rather than an RP perspective, and I do tend to equip party members with other outfits appropriate to the situation when not actively going into battle.

Sometimes I take it to silly lengths - for example when playing a Cousland, I like to have him start the game in ordinary clothing rather than armor (requires PC version, and +additem script mod), as It doesn't seem realistic to have him running around in a leather breastplate, armed to the teeth, when he's doing little more than chatting to castle staff, and carrying a message from his father. The palace attack begins with him in his underwear, and just enough time to snatch up a dagger to defend himself, before frantically digging out his personal leather armor.

Also when going to Denerim for the first time, I have the party in a disguise of some kind, with Leliana dressed as a Chantry sister with her Templar companion, and other party members dressed as rustic hunters newly arrived for the market - given that the surviving Grey Wardens are essentially wanted criminals, with a price on their head, and Alistair's birthright and the consequences of him being abducted by Howe or Logain's forces.. it seems prudent not to advertise my party's true identity.

Edit: BTW How on earth did you get the Jade Empire icon under your avatar? I have Jade Empire and I've completed it and everything... no icon for me.

In the end..

Leli - Battledress or the Sacred Ashes mod armor

Alistair - Cailan's stuff

Oghren - I give him Wade's heavy

Sten - Just massive dragonbone

Morrigan - default

Wynne - default

Zev - some of his gifts, and some duster leather.. I don't use him much

I think you just need to have JE in your origin account. I haven't even played it yet but its under my avatar.

It's free right now on Origin. I'd suggest getting it if you haven't played :)

And if you have an old computer, it'll still run.

You have to download JE from Origins. It's free right now, not sure for how long.

I like putting Alistair in Cailan's armor to highlight how similar the two are supposed to look, in hopes of silencing any nobles who will claim Alistair is a pretender to the throne. And to make the Warden's case appear stronger, if s/he is in fact supporting an actual Theirin and not just pushing the GW agenda.

I like the idea of going to Denerim in disguise. It's a bit too much micromanagement for me to do but I can headcanon that! The reason why I only really care about the "final" set of armor for the companions is that I'll just use the strongest available piece of equipment at the time, and if I have part of the armor set I'll keep it in storage at Warden's Keep until I have all pieces for the set bonus.

I don't use vanilla items much now, having discovered loads of armor mods. I like to use different armors and weapons each time because using the same old stuff gets boring after a while. But when I was playing with vanilla items only, I think it was usually like this.

Zevran - Wades superior drake skin armor, Maric's blade (until I get him the rose's thorn), Duncan's dagger

Morrigan - Robes of Possession, Winter's Breath

Leliana - Wades drake skin armor

Ohren - Calian's armor set, Ageless

Alistair - Templar armor

Sten - Blood dragon armor, Faith's edge

Depends on party selection and if I'm using DLC stuff

Alistair - knight commander's plate, boots of diligence, ancient elven gauntlets/gloves of diligence, unless my PC is a templar. Occasionally Cailan's

Morrigan - her personal robes, fire/spirit damage gloves, magus war boots, libertarians cowl

Leliana - felon's coat (if not taken by pc/zev)/battledress (if it is)/shadow of the empire (if felon's is taken and I'm not using dlc)

Sten - Evon the great's mail and wade's superior heavy (if not taken by PC)/juggernaut

Wynne - vestments of the seer/tevinter mage robes, fire/spirit damage gloves that morrigan's not wearing, crappier +defence mage boots

Zevran - felon's coat (if not taken by pc/lel)/shadow of the empire

Oghren - Legion of the dead

Shale - small lightning/large fire, unless preparing for a specific enemy.

PC warrior often wears warden commander's, either full or chestpiece with cailan's gauntlets and potentially cadash stompers.

PC mage generally gets vestments of the seer, fire/spirit damage gloves, good mage boots

PC rogue gets the felon's coat, crit damage gloves, and silverhammer's tackmasters or cadash stompers.

Amazing how nobody ever dresses Morrigan in anything but her default Morrigan's Robes, or the Robes of Possession upgrade from Flemeth's Hut, including myself. I don't even give her a hat, it cramps her style :D

Interesting also how many people use fan-mad armor, or modified versions of the default armor sets. I tried a playthrough or two using a few custom mods, and the Winter Forge mod, but to be honest I felt that some of it made my party feel a bit overpowered, and also kind-of takes away all the pleasure of doing the legwork to achieve the default armor sets. Why spend all that effort to get Juggernaut, when I can equip something twice as good right off the bat? I can understand why other people like to use them though, because using nothing but default gear can get a bit repetitive I guess.

To be honest the only mods I use are either graphical enhancements (textures, lighting,SweetFX etc) and annoyance removers that disable visual effects from enchanted/poisoned weapons and remove the distracting sound effect from auras. The only really game-altering mod I use is the Character Respec Mod, as I like to spec my party from scratch, in the way I prefer, and Bioware's default builds are never optimised enough for my tastes.

The point of using mods is to enhance the game experience. So, I agree that you shouldn't be using the armor mods if you feel that it doesn't add to the experience. But there are plenty of underpowered armor and weapons mods if you don't want them to feel overpowering your PC and his/her companions. One of Zevran's daggers at the moment, for instance, is inferior to the rose's thorn, but it has messy kills and I really love seeing the killing blow animations. I am still trying to find mage clothing mods that give a decent mana regeneration. Honestly, Morrigan and Wynne drink their potions like a fish (with two sustainables on)..

If you ever feel overpowered try adding Flash Creatures Rescale or Slinks Ravage from the nexus. I guarantee you will stop feeling that way.

IMO FCR is a must have because a number of things in the vanilla game don't make sense, like Cauthrien being the same rank as a High Dragon. FCR is modular so you can pull out the difficulty tweaks if you find things getting too tough. Things will still be more difficult than the vanilla game as all darkspawn that aren't meant to be OHKO will be more of a challenge to take down.

I always use the Legion stuff for Oghren unless I'm a dwarf.

Other than that, I switch around the Juggernaut and Effort sets between Sten, myself, and Alistair depending on what I am.

Wynne keeps her default circle robes. Morrigan uses her personal robes. Zevran I either give him Wade's stuff, Dalish gear, or the ancient Elven set. Leliana I sometimes have her go heavy and wear the Diligence set. I hate the look of leather armor sets on female characters.

Alistair - Cailan's armor, Duncan's sword, Bulwark of the True King

Sten - Dragonbone Plate, Asala

Oghren - Legion of the Dead gear

Zev - Dalish armor, Antivan leather boots, Falon'Din's Reach/Sorrows of Arlathan (Falon'Din if I'm playing a Dalish, Sorrows if not), Blightblood & Starfang if neither are equipped to my Warden

Leliana - Battledress of the Provocateur, Ugly Boots, Marjolaine's Recurve

Wynne - Vestments of the Seer, The Libertarian's Cowl (I know she's an Aequitarian, but...), Winter's Grasp

Morrigan - random mage gear

PC gear - heavily Origin dependent, e.g., dwarven Wardens would get the Legion gear and Oghren might end up with Blood Dragon Plate, elf mages might get Tevinter robes (for purely psychological reasons, of course), Dalish stick with their culture's gear, HN wardens hold onto their family heirlooms... etc.

[Edit] I'm normally not a huge fan of modded armor, but I really like this mod for my warrior F!Tabris: http://www.nexusmods...age/mods/1134/?

And this mod is essential for my Couslands and Sten: Cousland Sword and Shield (I HIGHLY recommend downloading all the optional files as well, because then you have a reason to keep Sten's sword with him till the endgame... among other awesomeness.)

Interesting thread. I always imagined that each armor was intended for a particular companion or the warden depending on specialty.  Cailan's armor seems particularly appropriate for "the man who would be king" -- albeit reluctantly -- Alistair.  Templar armor also appears to be destined for Alistair, but a complete set is hard to come by.  The Grey Warden armor makes sense for either Alistair or the PC, if he/she is a warrior.

Rogues always seem to end up with Wade's Drakeskin sets or something else in the "light" catergory.  Which leaves me to wonder -- with warriors in massive armor and rogues in light armor -- who is medium armor and even heavy (but not massive ) armor intended for?

As to the mages, I always suit up Wynne in the Tower-style outfits while I put Morrigan in the better Tevinter-style outfits.  I grudgingly use the best mage headgear available, but they all look pretty lame, particularly on male mages.  The Tevinter mage outfits also look way too effeminate for male mages.  (On this, at least DA Inquisition is an improvement.)

It depends on playthrough but usually

Alistair - heavy chainmail armor, Templar Armor, Knight Commander Armor, Juggernaut

Morrigan - i never like her theme robe, i will give her any robes (i just don't like her being too revealing)

Leliana - leather armor, scale or chainmail armor, Wade Drakeskin Armor, Shadow of the Empire

Wynne - any robes, Wade Dragonskin armor (even as Arcane Warrior, i see no reason giving her heaviest armor)

Sten - heavy chainmail, any massive armor, Armor of Digilence (i find that this armor suit him more than anything else)

Zevran - leather armor, Ancient Elven Armor, Shadow of the Empire

Oghren - any Dwarven armor, Legion of the Dead armor

I just use vanilla, it is more realistic for me, storywise and immersion.

I find medium armor works best on female warriors and rogues, and heavy armor looks good on Sten and Alistair.  I'm actually not that fond of the massive sets and use them more for roleplay reasons than anything else.

I use Winter Forge and create my own versions of the game's armors depending on what feel/look I want to have.  I also used a lot of cosmetic fan-made armors (especially Roguelass's Witcher gear).  Which Winter Forge could access the appearance of to rewrite stats, making it usable by any class/race.

One of many different armor links, this particular one pulls resources from DA2 and uses recolors of the armor featured in that game.

The creator has several mods posted on the site with other resources.

http://www.nexusmods...age/mods/4101/?

This gives everyone unique looking armors.

I really like how they did it in Inquisition where everyone had a 'style' they adhered to that was uniquely "them", but still you could change what they had stat-wise by using different combo's of mats, runes etc, which reminded me of Winter Forge.  I really hope that's the direction they're going with for future games because that was really cool.

However, before I had mods I had just the usual stuff, and Alistair usually wore templar armor or the Warden Commander armor.  I never really bothered to put them in anything 'pretty' because most of the armor in DAO looks like generic crap to me, cookie cutter appearances.  Though some of the mage robes were pretty, they were wildly impractical-looking, as was the midriff bearing female Dalish armor.

I don't really plan the armor, but it tends to go like this:

Morrigan usually ends up in the Archon robes with the fanciest of hats. (The one with the yellow brim and three teeth on the forehead.) When I had Dragon age Redesigned she'd get the black cultist dress.

Zevran gets the elven armor if the warden isn't using it otherwise he gets leather.

Alistair gets the templar armor or some nice heavy plate and early game he gets the horned helmet.

Lelianna either gets chain or leather.

Wynne keeps her clothes or gets a different colored variation.

Sten joins the Juggernauts or Legion of the Dead and Oghren gets the set that Sten isn't using. In Awakening Oghren gets the Hirol's defence armor if I'm not playing a warrior dwarf.

And Shale gets the prettiest of crystals.

Dog gets Kaddis of the Lady of the Skies and Mabari War Harness.

If I don't use the companion in the main game they usually stay in their starting armor. So I can spot who was on my blacklist for that playthrough. And if I ever learn how to add the butterfly sword effect on other weapons, then there will be loads of butterflies in camp. :)

I don't think tailored equipment gets any more obvious that the bandit in lothering that drops a greatsword, full set of heavy chainmail and a qunari cap (obviously not endgame gear, but hey).

For the intermediate armours, I feel like heavy has a place but I'm not sure what medium is meant to achieve. Sturdier rogues? But the armour rating is barely better than light (and battledress and coat both have +armor properties, which brings them above medium!), while strength req is only 4 less than heavy. And the only variants with interesting enchantments are wade's set (and lets be honest, nobody gets that in medium) and ancient elven, which is hurt by being locked to veridium. Heavy at least has diligence and evon's/wade's.

The armor sets in this game so much prettier than what DA2 and DAI gave us.

Alistair - Templar Armor for most of the game, Armor of Diligence, Juggernaut Plate; Duncan's Shield

Morrigan - Archon Robes; Oak Branch

Leliana - Wade's Drakeskin

Sten - the heaviest spare armor I've got lying around; Sten's Sword

Wynne - Vestments of the Seer

Oghren - Armor of the Legion when not playing as Dwarf Commoner; sometimes Dwarven Massive

Dog - I forgot...

Zevran - usually what he starts with, sometimes I replace it with heavier Dalish Armor.

Shale - Best crystals I've got.

As you can see, sometimes they get hand-me-downs, especially Sten and Oghren.

"The Warden"

Human Noble: Heavy Chainmail Armor, replaced by Heavy Plate Armor, silverite or volcanic aurum; Warden's Longsword (upgradeable); Kite Shield, Landsmeet Shield

I imagine most people who play warriors spend most of the game stuck with that heavy chainmail set that you find in Lothering, and eventually upgrade to the Armor of Diligence.

City Elf: Very similar to human noble, but Templar Armor as well; Hirol's Defense armor set; Vigilance longsword; Morrigan's Ring

Dwarf Commoner: Armor of the Legion; Faith's Edge, Dragonbone Cleaver

Dwarf Noble: Dwarven Massive Armor; Faith's Edge, Dragonbone Cleaver

Elf Mage: Vestments of the Seer; Lightning Rod, Heaven's Wrath
