For me, I enjoyed Citadel because it was a relief from the imminent Armageddon which we were helpless to stop. If ME and ME2 had had the same grimdark atmosphere for the majority of the games, then I wouldn't have needed as much of a relief. But because the first two games had much lighter segments mixed in with the dark, it was exhausting to only have dark for most of ME3. Plus, these are characters we've known across three games, and the player knows that we're not going to be with them again, so the meta knowledge makes Citadel more poignant.

I dunno, I feel like ME2 was the one really trying to be dark, whereas it was actually more appropriate for ME3. Both had their lighter moments though. But this is why I said people like Citadel in the context of ME3. Having an entire game full of the same ridiculousness wouldn't work at all, it would honestly be unbearable. I've got to be honest, poignant is the last word I'd ever use to describe Citadel.

Thedas is a vibrant world. DAI is as close to dark as it'll ever get.

Regardless of what Thedas is like, I would say DA2 is a pretty damn dark game. The central theme is that in the end, you can't change things. You can't prevent the conflicts. You can't save people. That ultimately, nothing you do really matters. There's no heroes to save the day, just ordinary people struggling to do what little they can. To me that's far darker than the OP's "dead fetus monsters".

Definitely a darker plot, I thought the tones of the original Mass Effect games were fantastic.

A mix of both. My favorite stories have always been dark with mature and complex themes, but with some lighthearted moment and also a bit of humour that must not feel out of place. I can't really imagine playing Planescape Torment without Morte's sarcastic remarks, and I think that a game like PoE would have been way better if there was a Minsc or a Varric in our party.
