Greetings!

I am soon going to play DA: 2 for the first time, having already played DA:O and DA:I I am wondering how romance works in DA: 2.

Is it a case of finding someone fast and then just spam "flirt" option or do I actually have time to get to know them before making a move or will that cost me some good cutscenes?

Also what is the difference between rival and friendship romance? Just a case of different dialogues or?

Thanks for reading!

It will work much like DAI... with the heart icon. You don't have to spam flirt. You could do it every so often. If it happens enough, an ultimatum sort of culminates.. and you can still back out even then.

Rival/friendship.. yeah, it's dialogue. Just roleplay however you see fit. They both add interesting angles.

So its first very late on that the "romance" option for characters becomes unavailable? If I were to start in last Act, will I still get all the cutscenes etc or?

You should decide on who you want a romance with in Act 2, it's too late in Act 3 to get all the cutscenes.

Flirt all you like in Act 1 but decide who you want to be with in Act 2 and stick with it, even if they leave you.  Stay true to the one you want from Act 2 onwards and it will work out.

Friendship romances are loving and you get on very well with each other, rival romance are full of sexual tension in a 'I hate but I want you soooo bad' kind of a way :)

Oh, and it's not like Inquisition or Origins, DA2 is much more separated in to it's 3 acts.  You can't just start a romance when you feel like it and sleep with someone early on for example, it has to happen in act 2.

However, it's not that bad because you feel like Hawke and your love interest have really have time to become friends and get to know each other, and you can't accidently rush the romance all at the beginning of the game (like you can with Alistair in DAO)

Even if they leave you?

Spoiler

Well I am hoping the game won't let me sleep with anyone early on or can I and that will ruined it all? o.O

Rival romance sounds interesting and different XD I like the thought off "Don't touch me!" *noms your face*

To my knowledge the sex scenes all happen at around the same point, they won't happen till act 2 for any companion (except for Sebastian as you can't sleep with him at all)

Don't worry, you can flirt with other people and it doesn't ruin anything.  As long as you flirt with your chosen companion in act 2 and commit from then on, you'll be fine.

Without trying to give too much away, just make sure you don't give up on a romance if your lover seems to give up on you.  Hang on in there if you want to stay with them forever.

Yeah, thanks for adding that. I just meant the icon is obvious like DAI.. unlike DAO which may confuse people.

Other than that, if you want the simple answer, find a character you like and use the flirt options. It's pretty straightforward.. You're not going to break anything at least. :P

Icon, you mean the wheel dialogue thing?

Sounds good, thinking of making a DA:O save first to transfer to the game as the Keep doesn't seem to work with DA: 2

Yeah, it's a heart on the wheel, just like DAI. That's all I meant. Sometimes people are less sure with DAO... or they get accidentally romanced.

Oh okay.

Accidental romance XD Yeah funny to suddenly have someone ask if you want to visit their tent lol. Never had that problem as far as I remember, but thanks for the heads up.

A word of advice for if you plan on romancing Fenris: you can sleep with Isabela and break it off with her afterwards but this prevents you from continuing Fenris' romance.  You can sleep with and break it off with Anders and Merrill and romance Fenris just fine but not Bela due to the fact that her relationship - like Fenris' - remains in a grey area until Act III.

The other option is to sleep with Isa before Fenris, then tell her it was just a bit of fun. You'll have no problems romancing him, or anybody else, afterward as you didn't trigger Isa's full romance. :)

I've found that sometimes bugs as well.  Plus, it makes more sense in my story and for my Hawkie for Fenris to break it off with her and Hawke to go into a friends with benefits deal with Bela.  The last DA2 patch was meant to have fixed this (allowing you to go Fenris>Bela>Fenris) but it's still broken for me.

Yeah generally with Fenris I don't sleep with anyone else. Flirting is fine but sleeping with someone else more often than not ends his romance.

My first romance was with Fenris. We flirted in Act I, romanced in Act 2 and made it official in Act 3. Basically no romance can start until Act II but you can flirt in Act I to get their interest. And you won't be forced into sleeping with someone. You can turn them away when they approach you if you want to remain loyal to one.

The only workaround is to go Bela > Anders/Merrill (not both) >Fenris, but this only works if you break it off with both Bela and your second partner.  Sleeping with the second person automatically breaks it off with Bela, and breaking it off with them of course ends that relationship, leaving you free to pursue Fenris.

Honestly, I only do multiple romances with my playboy/playgirl Hawkes anyway, because it just seems like such a douche move.

That's why I'd only go Bela>Fenris>Bela because getting into friends with benefits makes a lot of sense after the complications of Fenris' romance.  But DA2 is bugged for this path.

Urgh, that's such hard work!  I'm so damn monogamous in video games that I've never had to learn that trick hehe, but if I ever try multiple romances in DA2 I'll be sure to (try to) remember it.

I did sleep around a little in an Origins playthrough, having some fun with Leliana before dumping her for Zevran.  I actually found it really disappointing as Leliana never mentioned our relationship ever again after the 'you're dumped' convo, or that she was upset or jealous or wanted to keep my eyelashes in a jar....that discrepancy bugged me so it's put me off multiple romances tbh

Planning on a randy playboy Shep with a little black book mind you, so I'll give it one more shot with that character.

I've actually only done that with one Hawke to date, and he's basically a version of a can't-keep-it-in-his-pants OC of mine, so it made sense character-wise for him to play around.  Otherwise, I'm also pretty monogamous in video games.

Does the romance go by a approval meter like the one in Origins?

Kind of.

You can only access scenes with companions by having a certain amount of friendship or rival points with them (much like how it's handled in DAI, but this is spread out over the acts, so you can't trigger all of Fenris' scenes in one go like it's possible with Varric in DAI), so if you're constantly doing things that gain both their approval will stay in the middle (it's one meter with 'friend' at one end and 'rival' at the other, not two like ME's paragon and renegade meters).

But once you've maxed out your relationship with a character their approval doesn't change.  So, for example, you can max out Anders' friendship in Act I and then do everything in your power to ruin the lives of mages for the next two Acts.  He'll be at full friendship and still act you're BFF to him and the mages, even if he's been verbally disapproving in every quest.

XD best friend ever! "oh you just killed all the mage? COOL! I support you friend"

So if I gain full friendship with Anders, his scene will activate when its time? And not after one another? Are they triggered automatically, or do I need to talk to them or be somewhere specific?

Pretty much.  I tried to max is rivalry on a pro-mage playthrough (it's possible but hard).  He complained about how I was always betraying my own kind right after I was done with missions for the Mage Underground.

Companions will have several scenes per act which will trigger at certain points (usually the start of the act, and then others that are connected to their act's quest).  Then they'll often get a second scene at some point which is the Questioning Beliefs scene (this is tied to approval and is required for a romance).*  Your journal will update when it's time to go speak to a companion and all you need to do is chat to them in their home base.

*bare in mind it's been a few years since my last DA2 playthrough and I'm going from memory here
