Pretty much.  I tried to max is rivalry on a pro-mage playthrough (it's possible but hard).  He complained about how I was always betraying my own kind right after I was done with missions for the Mage Underground.

Companions will have several scenes per act which will trigger at certain points (usually the start of the act, and then others that are connected to their act's quest).  Then they'll often get a second scene at some point which is the Questioning Beliefs scene (this is tied to approval and is required for a romance).*  Your journal will update when it's time to go speak to a companion and all you need to do is chat to them in their home base.

*bare in mind it's been a few years since my last DA2 playthrough and I'm going from memory here

Pro-mage?

And don't worry, its better to know something (even if by memory) than stumble in the dark :)

Either you're asking what I mean by that or you're questioning why I go pro-mage.  I'll answer both:

Pro-mage means that I side with the mages over the templars throughout the game.  At several points you choose whether to support the mages or the templars and picking enough of one side during the game gets you an achivement (there's one for both playing pro-mage and pro-templar).  Hawke, no matter how much she wants to, can't stay neutral (the plot of DA2 sets up the mage/templar conflict of DAI).  Anders is very pro-mage freedom and anti-circle.  So playing a pro-mage game while getting rival points with him is tough, since almost every choice you make is going to get you friendship points with him.  But it is possible to max out his rivalry while playing pro-mage.  It's just very hard to do.

Why I play pro-mage: because I prefer it.  I like playing mages, most of the characters I like are either mages or pro-mage freedom and I just like playing pro-mage.

Are they triggered automatically, or do I need to talk to them or be somewhere specific?

Fenris does have a quest that's triggered the first time you take him out of the city in Act 2. It's easy to miss (especially if you don't use him much) since there's no dialogue or anything to prompt you to do it.

I meant what a pro-mage was. Thought it was someone who was skilled in mage spells and had the best gear etc. So thanks for explaining it.

Thanks for the heads up.
