A very useful use of film grain is to hide banding from: Textures, Framebuffer format, Monitor.

I wouldn't mind having it back. I've been known to switch lighting/film grain effects randomly during playthroughs.

It's iconic, It provides thematic ambiance, and It's absence in ME3 was one of the major reasons ME3's ending was bad.
Seriously I find it hard to play Mass Effect any other way.
An added bonus would be to include it in Multiplayer too.
Wait. People LIKED film grain?

I liked Film Grain because it gave that '80s' feel.

I've always wondered what people mean when they say that. Was there any worthwhile 80s sci-fi besides Eps. V and VI of Star Wars and early ST:TNG?
Blade Runner and Aliens, for one (and two...). I'm sure there's more that isn't coming to me. And there's plenty of stuff that wasn't worthwhile, which I'm sure exhibits that same 80s "feel."
I always turned off film grain, but I wouldn't begrudge its return. I'd still probably turn it off.

Do like.
I like when games are recounting past events, but told in present tense. Don't know why.

LOL, let's just skip it. It's an awful vfx.

It's just a simple filter that you can turn on and off that really does not hit performance much (unless you just go crazy with it) in ME2. I see no difference between on and off. They can easily add it to ME:A with ME2's type of grain I think and give you a toggle. PC Modders added it to ME 3 as an option.
Now for the people that REALLY love that "old sci fi look". Well, I am not trying to say consoles are bad or anything, but if you want that kind of control , PC is the way to go. Example. Battlefront with the Toddyhancer mod. When taken to this extreme (and it seems people in this thread want this look) the performance hit is pretty darn big though (you are gonna need a pretty darn powerful GPU or 2). Also keep in mind that not everyone grew up when film looked like this so it is kind of hard to commit to this kind of look in a video game.

I don't have a strong opinion, but I guess.. I liked the moderate grain of ME2 a little more than either of the other games.
It might just be that I liked the direction and lighting of ME2 instead.

I feel like I'm the only person on earth that doesn't remember the film grain. Does it not exist on PS3 or is it off by default or something?
Your not the only one
I literally have no idea what these guys are talking about. Thus showing how unimportant and barely noticeable this "film grain" was

The film grain was tweaked for PS3, yeah. Less bloom and no motion blur too, I think.
There's times where it looks more crisp too.. I like the 360 version more, personally.

I couldn't really tell the difference either.
