While the wait for DA4 brings any amount of hopes, there are just as many fears. Rather than start yet another wish list, I thought it might be interesting to speculate logically on things that may or may not happen. Some events could fulfill your dreams, others shatter them, and some make you bust a gut laughing, but they are all things you could see actually happening in Dragon Age 4. Here are some of mine:
1. Taking into account all the people who stress that a new protagonist wouldn’t have the same connection to Solas that the Inquisitor has, the writing team will attempt to craft meaningful scenes of the new PC encountering the Dread Wolf, giving them more than enough reasons to want to stop or redeem him.
2. There will be a gay/bi KISA and/or Dwarven romance option, and they will inevitably fall into one or two camps; happy and mature but dull as dishwater, or so crammed with drama you can practically see the writers getting drunk on all the fan tears.
3. All the players demanding that we end Tevinter’s slave trade are in for a rude awakening. I don’t care how special snowflake the next PC will be, being able undo a centuries old institution in such a short time frame (game wise) completely breaks creditability. I expect taking the radical approach will end in disaster, even if only in the epilogue slides. Realistically, I imagine that the best the players will be able to do is denting slavery by providing limited but practical economic and social alternatives, provide support to the freedom underground, who may or may not have terrorist elements, or aid the Qunari. If none of this sounds “heroic” enough for you, well welcome to Thedas.
4. Conversely, all those players who bemoaned having no ruthless or downright evil options should get their wish; it is Tevinter after all. However, don’t be surprised if the writers make said options ridiculously Stupid Evil that end up costing you in the long run.
5. Since DA writers love subverting expectations, it’s not a given that the Companion who is a Tevinter traditionalist will automatically be a mage. They could explore any number of reasons why someone would want to support a system where they are a second class citizen; patriotism, they have magic in their family or the hope of mage children, brainwashing, they could be a gladiator who loves the violent lifestyle, or anything in between. It could also be interesting meta commentary on players who support and imagine themselves as mages, whereas it is more likely that if they actually existed in Thedas, they would be mundane.
6. At some point in the PC’s adventures they will come across gaatlok. Either an NPC or one of our Companions will suggest selling it to Tevinter. Should the player take this path, they will eventually discover that the much of Magisterium has already known the formula, and have been actively suppressing it. Despite giving them a much needed edge in the war with the Qunari, most Magisters balk a such a powerful weapon that mundanes could use. Bonus points if one of your Companions is a Dwarf and/or Grey Warden who snark how having blasting powder wouldn’t help against the Darkspawn at all.
7. Every Dragon Age game has had some sort of Spirit Companion; Wynne in Origins, Justice in Awakenings, Anders/Justice/Vengeance in DA2, and Cole in Inquisition. In 4 we will have the first optional Demon Companion, with the possibility of helping it evolve into a Spirit. However, if you don’t have enough influence and/or make the wrong choices, it could become a more powerful and cunning Demon. Alternatively, by becoming a benevolent Spirit they will not wish to fight anymore, and you would lose them as a party member.
These are just off the top of my head, I’m sure more will come later. What are some of your Dragon Age 4 conspiracy theories?
