Do you guys think planetary hazards would be cool?

So to add on my topic yesterday on the possibility this game gets delayed into 2017 is anyone else seeing so many possibilities that I hope aren't missed? It has real potential to crush anything on the market when you consider now it's open and you can visit many planets. Imagine going to a volcano world that has all kinds of hazards or going to another planet where it has gravity hazards. Something I always thought was cool about the ME games is I'd read every planetary description including the gravity/yearly cycle numbers/etc. Always seemed like a missed opportunity to make each planet feel very different by going into one where you explore and a strange electrical storm happens that's a major hazard due to the planets alignment in the galaxy. Could you imagine the potential here? Go to a planet where it's close to the sun but just enough to be tolerant for humanoids. Perhaps they designed special facilities to offset it and the only inhabitants are a small research colony. Go out during the day and you would see steam coming off your armor because of the heat.

You guys ever see Chronicles of Riddick when he's on that prison planet at a certain time you have to be underground or it will incinerate you? Or hell, his Pitch Black movie where the sun is eclipsed and those creatures takeover the planet? Imagine the possibilities there...

No planet hazards always felt like something Bioware missed badly to help make every planet feel unique. It would be cool to see it as a big gameplay feature. The previous E3 trailer kinda hinted at that with the vastly different art direction each planet had. That's something I think was amazing in DAI was how beautiful the art direction was for each zone. They could take it an extra step forward in ME:A.

Eh, I guess one can dream...

ME1 had environmental hazards. Not to the extent you've mentioned.

Yeah, now that I think about it they did but they were so irrelevant it was almost forgettable for me. I don't know what the ME team's philosophy is on ME:A but in DAI it was clear they had a lot weighing on art direction. Seeing as DAI was successful and they share many of the same devs I'm willing to guess they're going to ensure a high degree of quality in art design again. Based on the leaked survey it sounded very similar to DAI and possibly an evolution of that formula where exploration was extremely important. What better way to do that than make every planet feel distinctly different? It should not just be a visual distinction to the player but also gameplay related. You are building on Frostbite which is excellent at destructive environments...

That was something that was strangely absent in DAI despite earlier gameplay demos showing environmental destruction.

Would be nice to have cover you can shoot out from under some enemies.

It already was a feature in ME1 although very limited, just a timer before we began receiving damage. Since they're bringing exploration back I think it's safe to assume environmental hazards will return and hopefully will be improved. Each hazard should have a different effect - reduced mobility on frozen worlds, altered combat mechanics depending on the planet's gravity, radiation that damages shields (like on Haestrom) electrical storms that render certain equipment unusable, sandstorms that hinder visibility etc.

It's something I'd certainly welcome. The shield-toasting sun of Haestrom affected one's tactical options.

I'd like to see gravity effects, perhaps along the lines of high gravity making (most) characters slower and low gravity making characters more bouncy. There is an area in Dragon's Dogma's Gransys with ultra high winds that characters must either fight against or be pushed along by.

I'm hoping for a lot more variety in the flora and fauna, too.

Of course, if they devote too much of their time and talent to environmental effects, they could be accused of making a space exploration sim instead of the combat sim a lot of people seem to expect.

And who on earth would buy that, am I right?

I think it would be cool, yes. I really liked it on Haestrom in ME2 and the Hazard maps in ME3's Multiplayer were some of my favorite maps.

Yes, I like this. It could add so much atmosphere and tension. When that hazardous storm erupts, and you have to get to cover.

They did have this on a smaller scale in ME1. And also Haestrom in ME2. I remember getting fried many a time while there, and my squaddies cursing me out about it.

I would really like them to work more in taht direction. I think it would add a nice amount of fear, tension and apprehension to exploration.

It could be nice if it's done well.

Oh, yeah, those winds in DD. Very well done that.

Eventually, I just had to pick up one of my pawns and carry them so I wouldn't blow away. It was sloooow going, but at least I wasn't flying backwards.

Sounds like your arisen is on the smallish side. Mine (I have 3) tend to be amazons - lol - so they're able to navigate Windworn Valley, albeit very slowly.

Yes, copy Fallout 4/Stalker/Metro and add some radiation storms and/or have players maintain their suits to stay alive, it makes what otherwise is just an ordinary scene feel more real.

lol, yeah a little bit. I didn't think so at the time, she's pretty average, but hurricane force winds will make you reevaluate.

So, yeah, we were quite the sight. With my pawn's squirming, and me slapping their azz, "Quit yer squirmin'!"

I would welcome it back. I loved Haestrom because of the environmental hazard.
