Damn these notifications... -_- guys just STFU. MWZ take your BS else where, you're derailing the thread, likely going to get it locked, because you can't shut up. Your original post to me, with the stupid grumpy cat, was moronic. Because there was no need to reply to it. I was originally talking about having swords and biotic powers, and naming my character Kylo or Ben Ryder. You reply with "No, Kylo Ren's a rip off blah blah I'm a whiny ******." So you replied just to btch about something I didn't set up, and tell me I couldn't name my character after a character I like? Who the fk are you?

Disney owns Star Wars and everything associated with Star Wars. If they want to say Rey is a lesbian, Klyo Ren is porking Captain Phasma, or fired Billy-Bob for whatever reason. Disney has that power. They own everything Star Wars, including the novels, old and new. It's under trademark contract. So they can use it. It's the same reason Loony Toons had an episode from 1968 (or close), where Daffy was dressed up exactly like Superman. He was flying in the air, until the old cartoon Superman grabs him by the neck and says "This is my area duck". Why? Because Warner Brothers owns both characters, regardless of writers. Same goes Family Guy and Simpsons, Fox owns them. Walt Disney's original cartoon Oswald the Rabbit (Micky's brother). Walt wanted to leave the studio he was working for, wanting to freelance, but couldn't take Oswald with him. Why? Because the studio owned Oswald due to contract, YouTube it and STFU...

No it's not and no you're not. You're just whining about the new Star Wars because you're a fanboy, the worst sort of "fan" a property can have. Nothing was stolen, "citing sources" in a billion dollar movie is completely moronic, and you're being willfully obtuse. Stop it.

You keep saying that, and not responding to anything I actually do say. Why should I continue this exchange exactly?

Why indeed. You say you barely even care about Star Wars and yet you're so asspained over this irrelevant nonsense that you can't shut up about it.

See this again, no rebuttal, no actual response just another attack. But to answer your statement.

Oh no I enjoy it, somewhat, its in the field of 60/40% or so. It's got a good little universe and occasionally has a story that interests me. I have far more merchandise for the Gundam franchise-specifically the UC genre with novelizations for the original series, the movie remake of the original TV series, the box set for the original 0079 series. Several of its sequals and spin off series, twelve model kits, several video games, I adore Gundam far more then I probably ever would Star Wars, just because I enjoy it a lot more.

I simply consider myself a casual adherent. I don't own every version of the films, I don't have every piece of merchandise, I don't even have every lore book or contextual guide.

Really, I know super fans of the franchise, they far outstrip me in their devotion. I don't even cosplay or attend conventions. And in truth? Really only you seem to think I'm actually 'pained' by this, as I said a page ago. I call it lazy, it shows little promise because its just a retelling of a story already told.

But considering everyone is in agreement this subject is best dropped.

Well so is every movie based on a book or book based on a movie. Or anything brought to another medium.

Fair enough, but those are generally polite enough to acknowledge where the source idea comes from, usually the title given its blatantly trying to generate draw from a popular title.

Kylo Ren is one of the weakest links in TFA, but I have to say that Jacen Solo is a weird hill to die on. He was nothing special.

Honestly, 99% of the EU (including the hallowed Zahn stuff, which doesn't read nearly as well to a 30 year old brain as it does to a 12 year old brain) was a little dumb, and the other 1% was KoTOR.

The EU was a mess of mostly crap stories by hack writers. I salute Disney for declaring Exterminatus, although it probably just paves the way for new shite EU stories from equally untalented hacks.

The first EU book of the new continuity is apparently total trash, seemingly a first draft that was never even proof read for grammatical errors.

Well I suppose it's just personal taste. To me it's a tale of a boy who lives his life trying to live up to legendary parents, living through a war, becoming a Jedi, fighting in another war against extragalatic invaders, watching people die and suffer around you for year after year. Seeing the galaxy twist and churn as it adapts to crisis after crisis, your own family and relatives drawn into the fire time and again. Ultimately culminating in what amounts to a unofficial coup under the banner of the Sith to prevent the rise of a greater threat that the galaxy is yet unaware of but would learn of in time.

.-.  I don't think you can judge the character by the merits of just one or two novels, you have to experience the journey I think. To me it was actually one of the better characters arc period in fiction.

I think I read all or most of the EU novels released through 2002 or so, and I'm inclined to maintain that most of it was nothing special. But then I thought the better stuff tended to happen once we got away from the continuing adventures of Han, Leia and Luke (and their immediate families).

Um... So, to address the topic of the thread, I suggest we don't have swords. Maybe a shield, l4ike the Shadow Broker had, since I guess those already kind of exist in the form of that holo-armour Sentinels get, but on the other hand, the holo-armour kind of makes more sense, so I can take or leave the shield. Swords, no. Omni-blade, okay, even a combat knife, okay, but no swords. Especially if they're made of light. It suits certain franchises, but not ME, imo.

Gotta agree with that. I enjoyed the Thrawn series, and even then mostly because Zahn went out of his way to spoof Star Wars conventions with the titular villain not being a complete tool. Without Thrawn himself the books aren't that special, and the ''main'' villain is just a boring, crazy eeebul Jedi. And I read some other stuff (the first book of that series about Mandalorians among others) and I had to put it down because it was barely above fanfic level of writing.

Then again, I have little affection for Star Wars personally. The setting and characters are iconic and all, but the story is mostly unoriginal fluff that fails to interest me, on top of the BS morality and space magicky nonsense. I wouldn't rank any Star Wars movie except maybe Empire as great.

Anyway, back to the topic. Swords in Andromeda can be done if properly implemented. Cerberus is bad and anyone who wants them in should feel bad. Speaking of Star Wars, I don't want Mass Effect's very own Sith Empire to come crawling back and bother us with its awful writing once more.

Not even boring, just kind of lame. I seem to remember having to actually convince myself that the whole evil clone with the double "u" name thing was actually cool - and that was in middle school, when virtually no aspect of Star Wars was a hard sell. I even enjoyed The Courtship of Princess Leia, as much as one can.

I do like the Chiss generally, though, and I guess we do have Zahn to thank for them. I hope they make it into the new EU.

No..... This isn't KOTOR. I happen to like KOTOR too (despite it being a space game, i love the thrill of cutting my enemies in half with a lightsaver!) But no, no really. They are two different games that should stay far, far away In a different Galaxy.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan as well. I'm cool with swords in Star Wars because the duelists are all wizards empowered by space magic that also doubles as the universe's god. Hell, they can even use magic to stop blaster bolts without even using their lightsabers.

Spoiler

That makes it much easier to suspend disbelief than in Mass Effect, where some guy running around with a sword has no magical ability to deflect incoming rounds.

Ah yes Tutaminis.

The Jedi answer to Sith Lightning.

Also handy for blasters.

Looking back at my last post, I realize it was poorly worded. So let me clarify the point I was trying to make, before someone quotes me and mentions shields and body armor as an ability to absorb or deflect incoming rounds. The guy or gal with the sword would have no abilities that give them more of an ability to deal with incoming rounds than any other combatant, putting them at a severe disadvantage versus anyone smart enough not to bring a blade to a gunfight.

Bladed weapons should remain secondary weapons, and I think the omni tool is perfect for that. Omni tool weapons are also uniquely Mass Effect, where an old timey sword might as well be from Dragon Age or Skyrim or about 90% of all other RPGs ever created.

No swords, they worked in star wars and halo but not ME. Combat knives/omni-blades and riot shields on the other hand are fine though.
