The Pathfinder (no name)
Or Ryder/Rider?

Ryder sounds dumb, but I can't think of anything better.

I'd like you could get nicknames that may vary depending on your actions and your alignment. I might or might not be thinking of Angel of Verdun and Full Metal ****** as examples.

Nearly everybody in the forces gets a nickname or their name shortend unless being formerly addressed, so I can't see why that couldn't be implemented in game.
It would certainly add to the game instead of constantly being called Commander or Ryder all the time.
Cheers

I'd like Rider more than Ryder cause Ryder sounds awful to my ears. Though if it's pronounced as "raider" then I can deal with it.
Pathfinder.. sounds bit not scifi to me, more fantasy-like title I guess, something that would better fit to Dragon Age. It's quite idealistic as well for my taste.

Based on a leak and the N7day trailer Thierry, would you rather the player be called
The Pathfinder (no name)
Or Ryder/Rider?
Meh whatever. The name is a name. Shepard probably sounded dumb to people at first to, until they found out we were space jesus. All about the NPC's saying "Shepard" instead of just saying commander, Lieutenant.
I shall be named Ruff.
My Shep's first name was German.
Oh and if they make us a Lieutenant and skip the name I will be named Dan.
Least of my worries.

This is not a great choice. On the one hand, I've never liked having all the characters refer to the PC using a title; having characters who are supposed to be your bestest friends in the whole wide world call you "The Warden" never sat right with me. It just seemed way too formal. But on the other hand, "Ryder" was the name of the protagonist in Space Mutiny, a notoriously bad scifi movie that's known today only because it made for a particularly memorable episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. So can I just say, "Neither?"

I better get to be Captain this time around, saving the world 3 times and I was never worth the promotion ...

Well if we can be a Captain, I will name myself Morgan. Just hope we have some epic beard options available. Being able to name the ship would be nice to. Name it the Private Stock.

Huh? "Ryder" is pronounced the same as "rider." I don't really get the complaints about the name. It's a fairly standard English surname.I'd like Rider more than Ryder cause Ryder sounds awful to my ears. Though if it's pronounced as "raider" then I can deal with it.
As for what the PC should be called, how about "Skipper"? Or does that belong to Shepard?

I can't come up with another name (since there's basically no information about the game), but I know eventually I'll get over being called "Ryder."
Ya know...I probably wouldn't mind everyone calling me "John," a default name, if it means I don't get called Ryder. For the reason of it being such a cliché sounding name, I just really do not like it.

Ryder just sounds like a cliché. Of course, my money is on the name. Unfortunately.

Having a space Jesus named Shepard wasn't?
They needed a short name. If anything, I am GLAD the name is not messianic. It gives me hope that the dev team has a clue. Hopefully we have a story much smaller in scope, with better, defined villains and nothing crazy like that third act in ME 3.
Now if we had a name resembling some kind of guru or religious figure? I would be like "here we go again".
Would you prefer "Gunner"? Gun (they did that With Solomon Gunn/Gun I forget).

Also, the name Ryder belongs in porn and nothing else.

Skipper is just nautical slang for the captain of a ship, or Navy/Marine jargon for anyone with the rank of Captain. It's sort of like how Sarge or LT (El-Tee) can be an informal way to refer to a Sergeant or Lieutenant, so not really specific to Shepard.

It had nothing to do with "space Jesus" or anything messianic. It was Alan Shepard. Just like Gus Grissom, Yuri Gagarin, etc.. They were paying tribute to their real heroes. Casey Hudson is a pilot.
I don't know.. the whole space Jesus thing is a seperate issue they got carried away with.

The occasional hate "Ryder" is getting is really weird. It's a real last name, and a fairly normal one. It has the benefit of being simple and striking, but the complaints of it being cliched seem so strange after the the last protagonist was actually called Shepard.
I like it pretty well, I hope it really turns out to be the main character's name.
