I had assumed it was a reference to Sally Ride.
Which would you rather the player be called? (Speculation/spoilers)

The occasional hate "Ryder" is getting is really weird. It's a real last name, and a fairly normal one. It has the benefit of being simple and striking, but the complaints of it being cliched seem so strange after the the last protagonist was actually called Shepard.
I like it pretty well, I hope it really turns out to be the main character's name.
Like I said, this was a tribute to Alan Shepard. Just like the new one might be Sally Ride.
This space Jesus thing never lined up well for many people. He's just a soldier. "I'm just a soldier, Anderson..." And even if you're heavy Paragon, they are still a pale comparison to Jesus of Nazareth or any kind of progenitor or saint of other religions. It's insulting really. Then again, Bioware might just be that retarded. Not sure.
Either way, in the story the only ones who feed into the delusion that you're truly special are the Reapers.

Squadmates and friends call us Ryder.
Military folks refer to us by our rank.
People who know us only by reputation call us Pathfinder.
Clancy Brown calls us Highlander.

I know it was, but they still put in heaps and heaps of biblical referrences alongside it. Purgatory, Afterlife, Legion, Eve. It was never really written in a way that would hold up to allegorical scrutiny, and I definitely don't think they meant for it to. I would never suggest that they actually want you to think that Shepard is supposed to be a supernatural savior.
It might be a complete coincidence, but if it is, it just means that it's a coincidence that happened to land right on the nose.

Yeah, they don't hold up to scrutiny well. The Purgatory ones are OK. Everyone involved in "purgatory" themes is in "limbo" so to speak. Jack's prison.. Jack again in ME3. Aria in ME3. EDI and Joker's relationship. Shep can give them a nudge. But I don't know what it is beyond that.
Legion is Legion... and also a Judas. ![]()
I'm probably more annoyed with DAI though. It tries harder, yet reeks of even more ignorance.

And since we're playing as the PC, not the PC's parents, we have no right to control over the name.

you can change your name if you want to. You don't have to stick it out if your parents were cruel with their name choice ...

Let's not forget the fact that Shepard was brought back to life after dying and had 12 "followers" in ME2.I know it was, but they still put in heaps and heaps of biblical referrences alongside it. But yeah it's probably an unfortunate coincidence.

Legion doesn't really betray you if you don't commit genocide on his people.
I see him more as Moses, working with Shepard to make the ex-slaves equal with the Quarians, if we are going with biblical references.
Anyway, I don't personally like Pathfinder because it's so impersonal. I like Rider or Ryder. Either spelling is fine. Named after Sally Ride, Ghost Riders in the sky song, and you have a Mako.
(Unless the Pathfinder is just a title like Commander)

I'm ok with Ryder. It may not be the most original name but it's simple yet cool and memorable.

But yeah it's probably an unfortunate coincidence.
Or they referenced really popular source material, or they actually wanted it to be a biblical reference all along.
Idk why they wrote it. I liked it. If it did or didn't reference religions, doesn't change it to me. I just don't get why it's a big deal.

That's not exactly what you recruited him for. He said he wanted his people to build their own future. That the true Geth didn't follow Sovereign.
Come ME3 he does the exact opposite... and sees the only future in the very thing he was against. He betrays his words to Shep and himself.

Well, without the Reaper upgrades the geth have no future. Times change.
So they get destroyed. Problem solved. Lots of other organics decided to die instead of enslavement in any way. Even EDI learns from their example.
Times don't change with something as important as the Reapers. It isn't a change in pants style or something.
Perhaps one day AI can be rebuilt, but without this huge impediment forcing these silly ultimatums. That's the future I can fight for.

So my choices are to be better than I was with now downside, or to die? I'm taking the upgrade.
That you don't think there's a downside to Reapers, period, is the problem.
I'm not going to try to convince you though. Too far gone a stance to even build a case. Where does discussion even begin?

I think they are referring to Legion/Geth VI using the upgrades after the Reaper Destroyer on Rannoch was killed. At that point there was no downside for them in using the upgrades since they are free of Reaper influence.

I have to wait and see the tone of the game before I can decide which I prefer.
If it is more professional, then Pathfinder.
If more casual, then Ryder.
Though I expect the game to have a combination of both, like they did with Commander Shepard but this time Pathfinder Ryder.

The downside is tying oneself to Reapers. It goes beyond some momentary choice on Rannoch. It's extends all the way to Synthesis. You're essentially declaring there's no way for anyone to have a future except without involving Reapers. And it starts with Legion drawing that conclusion. TIM and Leng make a similar conclusion, but with Control. They don't see any point to evolution without using Reaper tech. Destroy ideally wants to build a future too, but it cuts out the middle man.

Except they aren't tied to Reapers, at least no more than every single organic race is for using technology based off of Reaper technology.
Even Destroy is only available because the Reapers give it to you, so that future is also only possible because of the Reapers. And even ignoring that, after Destroy our cycle still uses Mass Effect technology, which came from the Reapers. The only future that involves no use of Reapers or their technology by us is Refuse, and that ends with our cycle wiped out by the Reapers.
Anyway, this isn't the purpose of this thread. There are plenty of threads to discuss this, so have them over their.
