I like "Ryder" just fine. I really don;t want to have "Pathfinder" blarbed after me every time I turn around. Especially after so much,"Inquisitor" blarbing.
Which would you rather the player be called? (Speculation/spoilers)

If it's Rider or Ryder, I'll have to name my character "Midnight".

Ryder's fine. It's simple, kinda cool but not too hip. Works as a first name so personal interactions seem more... uh personal. I honestly wouldn't care if they gave my character a first and last name if it meant they both got used in game. Making up new first names for every playthrough is the least interesting part of character creation because it makes no difference; except when I named my Femshep Lola ![]()
Pathfinder is... fine as a job title I guess but it sounds really important and I'd rather start out as a grunt than be He Who Is Responsible For Finding The Path... whatever the path may be. I'd prefer it if we were one of a team of Pathfinders.
I didn't much like being Inquisitor (although I liked the game) and I really didn't like being called it all the time.

Pathfinder is fine by me but it would be nice if we were called something different by friends.

I don't want another American surname. So it's a NO for "Ryder".
I want a name pool where we get to select from a set of pre-determined names. That way, subtitles of lines which include the PC's name will properly include the selected name & audio lines can have a databank of names, like............in-game cutscenes show the armor you've chosen and not the default look every time.

I don't like Ryder. I'd much rather be addressed by my title or rank if we happen to be military.

The occasional hate "Ryder" is getting is really weird. It's a real last name, and a fairly normal one. It has the benefit of being simple and striking, but the complaints of it being cliched seem so strange after the the last protagonist was actually called Shepard.
I like it pretty well, I hope it really turns out to be the main character's name.
I dig it because it makes ME protagonists being named after real world astronauts an ongoing thing.

I don't get the hate. How is Ryder cliche? I've heard worse names. I once new a guy named Sky Walker. And a whole family with the last name Moorcock. Maybe they would prefer that?

I don't get the hate either.
Although Killroy does make a good point. Most of us are assuming its the protagonist's name, but it might also be the name of the N7 guy from the trailer.

That's an interesting point. Although technically any surname can be American, in practice the MEU is way overloaded with us.

There is no such thing as an American surname, outside of some Native American names or African-American surnames that former slaves created for themselves, rather than use a master's surname. (i.e. Freeman)
The United States is a nation of immigrants and their descendants, so the vast majority of American surnames have foreign origins. Ryder is Anglo-Saxon. (English)

I like Pathfinder, Most because it make me think about Tau in Warhammer 40K.
But I will be able to play with whatever name/title they give me. (after all, i survived being called "champion" and "herald"

I'd rather not be addressed.
Wouldn't that make the dialogue seem unnatural? It would be a bit odd to have potentially have thousands of lines of dialogue exchanged with the protagonist with no one ever addressing him or her by name, rank, title, ect.

It can work for 1 on 1 conversations, but whenever there are group chats it becomes weird.

Time for a dumb question: If it does end up being "Ryder," does anyone have ideas for first names that can be used to generate lame puns and/or pop culture references? Aside from the painfully obvious ones like "Dick" or "Winona," I was thinking that you could make a super-lazy character named "Free" or a female PC named "Honey" as a tribute to Dr. No.
Yeah, I'm really bored right now.

I find the opposite to be true. I think it's weird how often people get addressed in games. I'm pretty much never addressed in conversation. If you are talking about someone a name is used if you are talking to a group and need to specify someone a name is used. But if I walk up to you I don't say your name or address you 99% of they time outside some generic greetings like hey, good morning etc.
