Pathfinder sounds just awful lol

Ryder or whatever last name works fine, I rather the PC be addressed by their name than constantly by their rank or title

I'd accept "Ryder" on the condition that referring to the protagonist should always start with "Yo Ryder..."

For me, to a non-native English speaker, Ryder or Rider sounds great, so much simplier than Shepard. I like it a lot.

I'm okay with Ryder. But please, no Pathfinder as a name.

Having a space Jesus named Shepard wasn't?

They needed a short name. If anything, I am GLAD the name is not messianic. It gives me hope that the dev team has a clue. Hopefully we have a story much smaller in scope, with better, defined villains and nothing crazy like that third act in ME 3.

Now if we had a name resembling some kind of guru or religious figure? I would be like "here we go again".

Would you prefer "Gunner"? Gun (they did that With Solomon Gunn/Gun I forget).

Well, Shepard's name comes from Alan Shepard, who was the second person and first American in space.

I don't want another American surname. So it's a NO for "Ryder".

I want a name pool where we get to select from a set of pre-determined names. That way, subtitles of lines which include the PC's name will properly include the selected name & audio lines can have a databank of names, like............in-game cutscenes show the armor you've chosen and not the default look every time.

??

There is no "American surname", it's just English.

There is no such thing as an American surname, outside of some Native American names or African-American surnames that former slaves created for themselves, rather than use a master's surname. (i.e. Freeman)

The United States is a nation of immigrants and their descendants, so the vast majority of American surnames have foreign origins. Ryder is Anglo-Saxon. (English)

I was trying to think of a way to point this out without doing so pompously, but you managed much more smoothly than I could have.

Also, I'd imagine that from the perspective of most of the Devs it would make more sense to call it a Canadian surname than an American surname, even though neither are actually accurate.

Think they'll let us pick our first name again? If so the legends will tell stories of the one they call Mustache Ryder.

Good to hear it wasn't like a lot of my other posts then. Too many times when I revisit an old thread I stumble across posts of mine that didn't quite come out how I intended, and I sound like a jackass.  :D

Right? Same here. It's a cool sounding last name. Could be worse, they could have named him/her with the most common German surname which is

Müller

A a swedish person, Ryder sounds really lame. Like one of those generic action hero names like Brock Steele or Jason Fist. Nevermind MST3k already did this with another Ryder already.

I kind of hope they use Armstrong for a protagonist at some point, in a tribute to Neil Armstrong.

On the other hand maybe it will remind people too much of Lance.

I'd hope they name a protagonist Hamilton after Margaret Heafield Hamilton who's ridiculously incredible and without her the moon landing would have never happened

That would be a good choice as well, and Hamilton has a good ring to it.

I feel inclined to play a female, now with the Rider idea.

That is... err.. if I play. I probably will. Ahem.

Yeah, they don't hold up to scrutiny well. The Purgatory ones are OK. Everyone involved in "purgatory" themes is in "limbo" so to speak. Jack's prison.. Jack again in ME3. Aria in ME3. EDI and Joker's relationship. Shep can give them a nudge. But I don't know what it is beyond that.

Legion is Legion... and also a Judas. :P

Hmm...I don't know, Street. I think you might looking for literal parallels where there are none to find. Some biblical terms and concepts just sound cool, so they went with them. It wasn't written like an allegory so much as it was just seasoned with a few referrences.

I'm probably more annoyed with DAI though. It tries harder, yet reeks of even more ignorance.

The twelve disciples around the Inquisitor thing? Well...

I know you want them to be more respectful of Andrastianism because of the parallels with Christianity, but the whole thing was a little irreverent to begin with, and deliberately so. I think we're better off if we don't expect them to make the fictional religion allign too neatly with any real one. Andrastianism is their creation, so it's difficult to accuse them of ignorance when they do what they want with it. And the Inquisitor is supposed to have more direct parallels with Andraste that Jesus. And Adraste is theirs.

It has little to do with Christian parallels specifically..but all religion in general. It's their interpretation of what people of Faith are like. It doesn't look like they put much thought into it.

DAO at least tapped into "Death" better. And DA2 had a underlying thing with Home or identity.. or both. But DAI just failed at Faith. Everyone knows Death or "Home" better firsthand, but I'm thinking they didn't know Faith. It's like watching a Polka band cover Punk songs.. and trying to be serious about it.

Err.. or something. Every once in awhile, a good Polka player comes along and covers it well though. Like Frank Herbert. But Bioware isn't Frank Herbert.

And since we're playing as the PC, not the PC's parents, we have no right to control over the name.

Oh I can see it now. Pathfinder commander Moonbeam Starchild Ryder.

It can work for 1 on 1 conversations, but whenever there are group chats it becomes weird.

How often do you people actually hear people be addressed?  you turn your head to face the person you're addressing, or some other such thing.

These cues could be offered through camera movement and shot framing.  We don't need the game to assign us a name.
