Right? Same here. It's a cool sounding last name. Could be worse, they could have named him/her with the most common German surname which is
Müller
I've always liked the name Müller.

But it doesn't sound 'cool', it's hard with German last names anyways, 80% of them are just medieval jobs.

lol.. A quick google just confirms that. ![]()
That's often the case for a lot of surnames though, I guess.
I like names that are kind of highly ornamented and stuff like Valdashyne or Diamandis or Freishanastrika
Ok I got carried away there.
That's me but ME and Bioware land... hm.... I don't know personally Mueller doesn't work for me as far as Germania, maybe something like Nachtigall or something... which I don't really know what that means but it sounded nice.
If it has to be simple... you know strangely enough Shepard is pretty good, don't like Ryder nearly as much. Although since that's impossible uh errrgh errmmmmmmm...

How about Sauron!
Or like what's one of the famous elves.. Melchior? Melka? Balthasar? All right all right.. welllllllllll.....
Hmm I like Commander Melka, makes me think of melting and ice cream.

Nachtigall means Nightingale
It'll always be a two syllable surname.
They won't make it a one syllable name because it wouldn't stand out. It wouldn't be longer than two because it would seem more formal (like Inquisitor).
Rider is fine. It's basic as all hell though.
Based on a leak and the N7day trailer Thierry, would you rather the player be called
The Pathfinder (no name)
Or Ryder/Rider?
By an actual first name so his closest friends and lover aren't calling him by a title or last name like poor Shepard.
I'm one of those people that have a super short last name and everyone in school/college and my circle of friends called me by my last name to the point where it was weird to hear my first name. I didn't mind. I still don't.
Now that Fallout 4 has a character saying the protagonist's player-selected name, BioWare needs to up the ante and have EVERYONE say the protagonist's player-selected name.

That's just Codsworth, and it's also part of a subordinate clause "Mr ____ " with an obvious pause before the sentence is continued.
It would be unfeasible to restructure every sentence to accommodate that robotic requirement.

I kind of hope they use Armstrong for a protagonist at some point, in a tribute to Neil Armstrong.
On the other hand maybe it will remind people too much of Lance.
The only Armstrong that needs to be paid tribute.
I feel inclined to play a female, now with the Rider idea.
That is... err.. if I play. I probably will. Ahem.
Same here; One on the condiotion i have no new Elder Scroll game out... or anything.
I'll play a Female cause in ME1 i did.
How often do you people actually hear people be addressed? you turn your head to face the person you're addressing, or some other such thing.
These cues could be offered through camera movement and shot framing. We don't need the game to assign us a name.
This isn't directed specifically at you but what's with everyone claiming they never use people's names? I use a person's name a lot when I'm talking to them but you all act like you go around yelling "Oi, you!" to everyone.
Also according to Dale Carnegie, author of How to Win Friends & Influence People:
Remember that a person’s name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
Nachtigall means Nightingale
Oh, Danke-shen.
The same is true of English names. Miller. Potter. Fletcher. Thatcher. Cooper. Smith. Wright. Shepard. But it doesn't sound 'cool', it's hard with German last names anyways, 80% of them are just medieval jobs.
Yet more evidence that people who write books like that are merely projecting their own preferences rather than revealing some universal truth.

The Pathfinder is even worse then the recent 'Outlander' (and 'the Outlander' IS bad).
If they go for the Pathfinder next time we can end up as 'Digger', 'Hunter' or 'Cleaner'. It does not sound like a proper title, and I can barely see it as a nickname. Not to mention all those possible LI\friends dialogues.
Now that I think of it... did KOTOR1 have any 'special title' for the player character? Because I just can't think about any right now. Must be something subtle enough not to annoy\not to become a meme. Which is a good thing. It means that writing dialogues without constant addressing PC by tittle\surname IS compatible with voiced characters.
Ryder? Not bad, actually. Reminds me of Hawke.
Herbert.

Ryder is an occupation based name as well, apparently...or at least one version of it is. Out of curiosity I googled it.
This interesting and unusual name is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and has two possible meanings. The first of these is from the late Olde English pre 7th Century term "ridere", a derivative of "ridan", to ride, and is an occupational surname given originally to a mounted warrior or a messenger. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, however, and the introduction of their feudal system, the term "Rider" or "Ryder" was soon displaced by "Knight" in its growing sense of a tenant bound to serve his lord as a mounted soldier. Job-descriptive surnames originally denoted the actual occupation of the namebearer, and later became hereditary. The second possible origin of the modern surname is from the Olde English "ried, ryd", clearing in a wood, used with the suffix "-er" as a topographical name denoting residence in or by such a clearing. Topographical surnames were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages. The modern surname can be found recorded as Rider, Ryder and Ridder.
Hawke, "The Champion," was my favorite name/title combination so far. Now it's as though they're just running out.
Pathfinder is an awkward mouthful of a title.
I'm not a fan of Pathfinder either, at least if people are going to be referring to the character as "The Pathfinder." Pathfinder would work better as a name of a unit (scouts/reconnaissance, for example) or a job description, rather than a title specific to a single character. On that note I wonder if Bioware is basing it on the historical use of the word.
Ryder or their rank, assuming the protagonist is military.
Something like Fallout where your protagonist is potentially addressed by his or her first name occasionally would be great too.
Yeah that would be great to be called Jane/John only a few times by one character.
There are things to praise Fallout 4, but the whole first name thing isn't one of them it's a tech demo at best and waste of resources and time at worst.

Yes, it would be great for a LI to refer to the main character by his or her first name. You know, like normal people do.
I'm glad we see eye to eye on this issue. ![]()
