      So in my play through of dragon age 2 I really wanted to be friends with Merrill, so i did her companion quest and gave her the Arulin'Holm thing, and the later went to talk to the demon. I killed the demon and the keeper and when we left her clan confronted us. I took responsibility for her and so they backed off. All seemed well, Merrill and Hawke were good friends, the eleven clan was still alive and well and I figured things were good. So while playing Dragon Age Inquisition I heard Varric talking about Merrill and he said that Merrill had turn to stone?? What? No! that's not what i wanted

 

      So I figured that's just how things turned out, but while watching a playthrough from Jesse Cox I heard Varric mention that Merrill was alive and well and leading some elves. So my question is, how did he get that outcome? I'm going to play the series over again and I'd really like to make sure she lives through it. So what do I do? Do I simply just not give her the Arulin'Holm? Do I need to refuse to help her talk to the demon? And is there a way of getting a good outcome and also being able to have her as a friend? 

 

I've tried googling this to find the answer and I haven't seen anyone mentioning what Varric says about her turning to stone. So I figured I'd try here to see if anyone knows. It'd really suck to play everything over and hear Varric say the same outcome I really liked Merrill and want to have a outcome were she lives

I have seen no mention of this, and I do not believe it actually happens. Nothing in Merril's wiki page even seems to to suggest this occurrence, nor my many playthroughs of  DA2. Varric often speaks of the "Stone" when speaking of traditional dwarven culture and his dismissal of it, perhaps you mistook one such conversed word for Merril's name? Try looking through Varric's Inquisition dialogue in the wiki for key words you remember using the find tool. 

 

All outcomes are that Merril lives save where Hawke sides with the Templars, fails to convince her to join him or her and then has to kill Merril who will then make a last stand with the mages. As long as you don't join the Templars or atleast fail to become good friends with Merril she will be fine. 

 

Just don't side with the Templars is what I'm saying. That should be a given.

I never let Merrill finish her mirror and I always make sure the clan lives and in all my DAI games, Merrill is helping the elves. I'd never heard of Merrill turning to stone either. Merrill has never died in my DA2 games either.

Maybe you heard Meredith and mistook it for Merrill?

Yeah, it was Meredith who turned to stone. Not Merrill.

Just to reassure you, Merrill is alive and well and helping the elves, provided you don't end up fighting her at the end of DA2.
