I'm sure this was probably discussed at length on these forums at some point in time but I have avoided the spoiler forums until I finished the game twice.  Was he even mentioned at all in DAI?  Was he in the game but I just missed him twice?

Was he obliterated by that good old 'Political Correctness' spell?

Not directly in the game.

Bodahn is mentioned by Varric and Bianca to be in Neverra. Sandal isn't mentioned, but we could assume Sandal is with Bodahn.

In Trespasser you can come across Sandal's diary in the crossroads (each entry simply reads "Enchantment"). Raises some questions of how Sandal got into the crossroads in the first place...then again there are a ton of questions regarding the abilities of Sandal.

Oh I missed this. When did they mention Bodahn?

Besides the journal EF mentions, Dagna mentions that she's the second best enchanter, and the best is a bit unstable, a reference to Sandal. And there is an easter egg in the Descent where one of the collectible mugs mentions Bodahn:

Enchanted Stein: A rune is attached. On the side opposite, it reads "Bodahn & Sons Quality Wares and Enchantments."

Well Sandal was supposed to have been sent to O'rlais to be the court enchanter for Celene.  I considered him to be a real loose string in the whole story.

During Varric's quest "Well, ****". It's mentioned in Varric and Bianca's banter once when you're in the Dwarven place in the Hinterlands. Forgot its name.

Yeah, I never understood this.

Bodahn says in Dragon Age 2 that the Empress Celene found one of Sandal's enchantments and wants to meet him.

I assumed this was Bioware's way of setting these characters up for DAI. Alas no. I was super peeved about them not being in DAI and still am.

It was nice to see Dagna again, but I would have preferred Sandal and Bodahn to be at Skyhold.

If Bioware was so adamant about bringing Dagna in DAI they could have left her as an NPC in Redcliffe, who is making a quick stop to drop off some items for a friend before moving on.

OR

They could have had Dagna as an Agent under one of the Advisers providing her knowledge out in the field with the troops, spies, diplomats or whatever.

IMO you don't remove two well liked  NPCs and replace them with some leftover.

I sure the hell hope Sandal and his Dad are back for D4 and they don't throw some other random NPC at us to fill the spot again; like that dude in The Gallows who needs ingredients. Ugh.

Actually she says 'Bogdan', not Bodan. Which I assume is her partner or some such.

I hope they turn up in DA4. It was nice seeing Dagna's passion for magic turn out well, but it's somehow just not the same without Enchantment!

I didn't mind their absence, as recurring minor characters become more and more immersion breaking each time they appear. But it is very strange that they had a clear set up in DA2 which was never followed up on. I don't really need to see Sandal again, maybe he stayed at the VR palace and didn't come to the Winter Palace.

And you find that journal right next to a dead qunari who if memory serves me well has been killed with a blade. All other qunari in the area have died by fear. I might be misremembering things...

The journal in the Crossroads doesn't necessarily mean Sandal was physically there. There are plenty of ways a journal could end up there, and it might not even be there physically. There's a banter in which someone says the books aren't really books, just memories manifested as books.

Honestly, I think Bodahn's remark about going to Orlais at Empress Celene's invitation was a way to get him into DAI, and that they failed to appear in DAI because the writers reconsidered the idea and decided against it.

I both liked Bodahn and Sandal and was highly uncomfortable about them at the same time. On the one hand, I appreciated how they handled the subject of a parent with a special needs child, and I appreciated that even though Sandal faced communication challenges most of us don't, he was still more badass than everyone else in the room, including the protagonist. As he should be. The part that made me uncomfortable was that he was portrayed the way autistic people were often portrayed in films, treating his neurological development as if it were some kind of joke. To its credit, the fan base usually seems to respond to him with affection and respect.

We may never know why they decided not to bring them to Orlais. Maybe it was because having the same characters appear in three installments was deemed too improbable (but that didn't stop them with Leliana). Maybe it was because they shared my ambivalence about them (possible, but I kinda doubt it). Maybe it was because they couldn't have two enchanters and they wanted Dagna more. I'm hoping it's the last one.

Considering that you find the journal by a rune forge and that you find two completed runes right beside it, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Sandal really was there physically. He can do things most people can't. The Crossroads are a strange place, containing both material creatures and artifacts and Fade creatures and artifacts. I'm not sure we'll ever find out the truth.

Not to mention he already has abnormal powers for a Dwarf, if we remember DA:O and DA:2.

Or maybe they just couldn't get the VA. That happens. Isn't that why Morinth got Banshee'd in ME3?

Dagna does indirectly mention Sandal, saying there's one other who's better at enchantment than she is but her "mind isn't that wonky" or something like that.

He will play a major role in the next game. He will be key in helping defeat Solas.

Yes , he was. Read Lady Insanity's theory on the tittans. If she is right then Sandal is a agent of the titan.

Pretty sure he was a differnt va for da and da2.  Major characters have appeared in bioware games with different VA

Sandal's VA, Yuri Lowenthal, was already on the payroll, at least for Trespasser. He voiced Cyril de Montfort.

David Gaider talked about Sandal in an interview

DG: Well, Sandal in Dragon Age Origins was fun. We brought him back for DA2. A lot of people thought it wasn't the same voice actor, but he was. That was Yuri Lowenthal. I don't know what it was, having Sandal just saying "Enchantment!" was adorable. I think as soon as you started having him talk more I kind of got a little bit of the feeling, like we were going somewhere a little uncomfortable to me, almost like we were making fun of mentally handicapped people. He's not mentally handicapped but sometimes he sounds like it. I'm a little leery of what was essentially a bit of a joke, and a lot of people are taking him more seriously than he was perhaps intended, to the point that perhaps he may become more important as a result.

Might go some way to explaining why he didn't show up.

Screw this offended bs. Sandal would be perfect avatar/child of Titan. So wah if he was mentally handicapped maybe titans cook his brain or he is just avatar of baby titan.
