I like Sandal just fine but i liked having Dagna. It's nice to see that my decision to help her in Origins paid off.
So what happened to Sandal?

Sandal's VA, Yuri Lowenthal, was already on the payroll, at least for Trespasser. He voiced Cyril de Montfort.

Not directly in the game.
Bodahn is mentioned by Varric and Bianca to be in Neverra. Sandal isn't mentioned, but we could assume Sandal is with Bodahn.
In Trespasser you can come across Sandal's diary in the crossroads (each entry simply reads "Enchantment"). Raises some questions of how Sandal got into the crossroads in the first place...then again there are a ton of questions regarding the abilities of Sandal.
In Trespasser, aren't there also Qunari corpses with multiple stab wounds meant to imply that Sandal had been there? It's been a while, but I seem to recall that.

Which I can dearly appreciate. It may be due to overexposure to his "Enchantment" joke but I prefer Sandal to have a smaller role and presence until he is relevant to the plot.

That is a mistake in my opinion...because Sandal is the representation of Dragon Age...Sandal gone, Dragon Age gone...
Who can deny that Sandal take a major part in previous games? The Warden and Hawke can't kick ass without Sandal...those glowing weapons of two major heroes and their company in Dragon Age universe are modified by Sandal...it was Sandal who make them cool...

Screw this offended bs. Sandal would be perfect avatar/child of Titan. So wah if he was mentally handicapped maybe titans cook his brain or he is just avatar of baby titan.
Except I don' t think he was intended to be anything like an avatar for the Titans. He was a joke character, that they decided people were taking too seriously.

I don't know what it was, having Sandal just saying "Enchantment!" was adorable. I think as soon as you started having him talk more I kind of got a little bit of the feeling, like we were going somewhere a little uncomfortable to me, almost like we were making fun of mentally handicapped people. He's not mentally handicapped but sometimes he sounds like it. I'm a little leery of what was essentially a bit of a joke, and a lot of people are taking him more seriously than he was perhaps intended, to the point that perhaps he may become more important as a result.
Might go some way to explaining why he didn't show up.
Yeah, well the fact that they put in the whole important prophecy thing kind of makes him more than a joke, that and all the other things that go with it. Sounds like the old politically correct nonsense did factor into things.

Bring back Sandal, he was a great character. I didn't see anyone being disrespectful to his being special needs, everyone I know loves this character. PC is really getting out of hand! I always assumed when Bodayn tells HoF and Hawke he found Sandal abandoned in the deep roads it wasn't an idle comment. Is Sandal a Sha-Brytol? or perhaps another dwarf touched by a Titan like shaper Valta. This needs to be explored.

In that case they made a horrible horrible effort of making him a joke character considering all of the elements that went along with him. By the end of DA2 I viewed him as a key character going forward in the game series. More important than Hawke, the Grey Warden or any of a dozen other characters that made an reappearance.

That prophecy had like a 1% chance of triggering each time you click on him. In four playthroughs I've gotten it once.
In addition, the prophecy was incredibly vague, and had absolutely no game impact.
So, yeah, I'm willing to bet joke. If it had been "politically correct nonsense" I don't think we would have found his diary in Trespasser. Nor would Dagna have mentioned him.

Wow. Just...wow... ![]()
In DAO, he only appears in Fort Drakon because the designers felt the player needed one last chance to stock up on potions and runes before facing the archdemon, so they made a joke about him tearing through a bunch of darkspawn to "explain" why he was there. In DA2, they kinda ran with that when they gave Hawke an excuse to wander about the Deep Roads. Then there's the prophey, which is expressly there simply as an easter egg.
Sandal was never important save as a source of "Enchantment!" And to a lesser extent, a link between DAO and DA2.
And later jokes about him secretly being the Maker. Like he's Thedas's version of Fizban or something

I doubt Bioware even made concept of titans in DA:O. But Sandal can use magic and is strange like Valta so it would make sense.

This whole hoard of dead dark spawn and sandal there? Yeah they needed on last potion stock up, thus my comments that they did a horrible horrible job it by having all these dead spawn around him.

Or course he was, he was a dwarf found wandering the deep roads by himself, he is the only dwarf able to create these unique enchantments, he appears in the red lyrium deep roads quest and survives by 'not enchantment!' He has a long prophetic dialogue piece in kirkwall. His existence goes way way beyond a one off easter egg joke. If that was their intent they did a terrible job of it.
And later jokes about him secretly being the Maker. Like he's Thedas's version of Fizban or something
Some people jokes about him being the maker does not lessen what came before at all.

Again, it was a joke. They couldn't justify why a merchant would be hanging out unharmed in the middle of a darkspawn invasion, so they lampshaded it with a totally ridiculous scenario.

You're right, he's not a one-off joke.
He's a two-off joke.
Some people jokes about him being the maker does not lessen what came before at all.

Which sounds like a good reason to start downplaying him now, no? If people are getting such an overblown impression of a minor joke character, its time to give him a break rather than fueling the fire.

Once again, David proves to fed people b.s and be a total tool.
Thus I am going to pull out lines and add a rebuttal.
"We brought him back for DA2. A lot of people thought it wasn't the same voice actor, but he was. That was Yuri Lowenthal."
I never once ran into someone who said, "Hey, Sandal does not sound like the same voice actor in DA2." Anders? Absolutely. Sandal? Nope. If five or ten fans did say this, well that does account for a lot.
"I think as soon as you started having him talk more I kind of got a little bit of the feeling, like we were going somewhere a little uncomfortable to me, almost like we were making fun of mentally handicapped people."
Wait, Wait. So when a character who speaks more it translates into making fun of mentally handicap people? If you know Sandal is not mentally handicap then why would anyone feel uncomfortable about giving such a character more lines? I for one am mentally disabled and not once did I ever view Sandal as such nor Bioware making fun of mentally handicapped people. Sure, there is some thing mysterious about Sandal, but that is one of the things that adds to the allure of his character.
"I'm a little leery of what was essentially a bit of a joke, and a lot of people are taking him more seriously than he was perhaps intended, to the point that perhaps he may become more important as a result."
Sandal was intended to be a joke, yet you illustrated above that you were trying not to come across making fun of the mentally handicapped? And here I always assumed logic was one of many strong points for a writer. Here's a tip David: If you don't want to come off as making fun of the mentally handicap don't announce to people, Sandal's character was meant to be a joke.
Your blaming the fans for taking Sandal seriously? Um. That is not the fans fault - its yours and any other writer. YOUR the ones who decided to add in little hints in DAO and DA2 that Sandal was more then what he was. Now your puzzled why fans take him more seriously? If you want the character to be a back-round character, then you do just that. You don't have Sandal stand in the middle of corpses covered in blood offering to sell you things in DAO. Nor bring him back for DA2 and drop hints like freaking rain drops during a summer storm. Once you do people are going to assume the character is more then what he/she is. So, David be a big boy and put the blame where it belongs.

I'm just disappointed. All these years I though Bioware was building up a cool character for an important role in the metaplot, but it turns out Sandal was just a joke.
Well that at least explains Dagna becoming the Inquisitor's Archanist ,and I'm glad Valta became the series' first dwarven mage if it couldn't be sandal.
