Just thinking out loud here.
In ME1, 2, and 3, we cleaned out many, many, bases, stations, caches, labs, etc. In later play-throughs I would wander around and take stock of what I found before returning to the ship. There were Armored Vehicles, Lab equipment, Safe habitation modules on otherwise non-hospitable planets, assorted merchant freighters, flat screen AND 3d virtual monitors, many armored shuttles and a small army of repairable security mechs. If you kept even a small percentage of that salvage, you would be wealthy, or able to equip a start up colony, or even equip a mercenary company. Do you realize how differently you might play if you wanted to keep possible salvage intact during your missions? I kept getting notifications about how I had received some amount of alliance or cerberus funding. What if ..... what if you took Zhu's Hope under your wing as a charity and diverted salvage and equipment to aid the rebuilding of that colony (for example)? What if you had to track how much salvage you recovered each mission and it's potential worth? What if cargo space was also a limiting factor and you had to be careful to get needed items at the expense of leaving desirable items?
Like I said, Just thinking out loud.
