As title says, why do you enjoy side quests, and how do you like them?

Me: I like side-quests to see what is gonna happen, and therefore the way I like them is when they're well-written and have some good character interaction or if they involve opening up a new place to explore and stuff like that. Rewards are nice, but what motivates me to see side-content through is the curiosity of perhaps seeing something unique or something I will remember the game for.

I just like the funny ones.. mostly for the acting/cinematics.

Depends on what you mean on sidequest though? I mean things like Conrad Verner's stuff or anything involving Batarians. And some little things in ME1 like the origin stories. Not many of the combat missions in any of the games.

The only sidequests I don't like are ones that only amount to "Collect X number of thing". Like finding all the Resources, Matriarch's writings,  Turian symbols. and the Salarian League of One members in Mass Effect 1.

The sidequests I like the most are the ones that involve exploring a new area for treasure, or fighting gangs and criminals in Denerim, or capturing Keeps.

I would exclude the loyalty missions from ME2 because they act as main missions in how they progress the plot. Otherwise everything else is side-quests IMO, even the very action-heavy and mission-based ME2 squad missions in ME3.

It's everything between the Citadel side-quests in ME1 to scanning planets in ME3 to collecting turian insignias on planet surfaces.

If we're gonna bring up DAO, then there's a lot more that I like.

ME isn't all that great.

I enjoy sidequests. It allows for random little stories and potential amusement.

What stories in ME though?

That's what I think a lot of them lack.. Distinguishing personalities or plots. I don't ask for a detailed story, but there isn't much to them. So I just like the funny dialogue based ones.

At best, it's kind of funny that I keep harassing the hell out of every merc in ME2. That's sort of the story in my head, but it isn't much to work with.

They should be interesting, and not feel like chores. Some dialogue, story and cutscenes can go a long way on this front.

The Witcher 3 mostly handled side quests in a way that made sense and was interesting enough (most of them) as to not to feel like chores.

(that said, even TW3 is far from perfect on this front, despite being a step in the right direction.)

Those collection quests are Mass Effect's worse ones. The better sidequests are things like rescuing that guy from the biotics or talking down a biotic cult leader peacefully. Even the Cerberus sidequest chain was better.

I liked Price of Revenge

ME2's a funny case where the bulk of the game basically is a series of side missions.

Mass Effect 2 is almost nothing but sidequests, as I've said in the past.

I wasn't really speaking on ME specifically, but then most of the series is pretty light on side missions anyway. But if I really had to choose among my favorite side missions, I'd basically be choosing from the loyalty missions of ME2. Those were all basically side missions.

I didn't consider them side missions...but I like them too.

In Hudson's words: "the funny thing is that people will say 'other than gathering your crew and building your team and getting ready for this mission, there's not much story there.' But that IS the story."

Most of the sidequests in Mass Effect 1 were either world building or helping someone with a personal matter. There's also sidequests that are there to help define your Shepard in term of roleplaying, like that guy on the Citadel arguing about with a woman over his late brother's fetus.

My personal favorite is UNC: The Negotiation. That Warlord dude amused me, and is easily my favorite NPC to kill. I really love BDtS, also.

Depends on the sense of urgency created in the main quest. I prefer games with less urgency so it opens up the possibility for side quests seeming natural.

I generally like them when it doesn't seem like you are ignoring some count down clock too doom in order to do them.

I like them because it makes the world feel more real as it fleshes out the setting. They frequently go into more normal problems, people and environments or go the other extreme into bizarre situations that might detract from the main plot if it were connected to that. Either way it makes it seem more like a real setting instead of just one big mission.

I just don't see it.. Just like Hudson said, the recruitments are the main game. The whole game is about characters and a suicide mission. It's like the Blues Brothers plot.

Sidequests are minor NPC interactions and those N7 missions.

Yeah, but I'm talking about the loyalty missions. Recruitment is necessary (at least to a certain number), but the loyalty missions are not.

Ah fair enough.

I guess you're right.. but they're kind of unique too. Something very peculiar to Bioware.

I liked them all though. Even with characters I didn't like (Jacob).

Keep fetch quests to a minimum.

Give us lots of choice in how to complete them and consequences. Remember, failure is a consequence.

Those N7 missions were an abomination throughout all three games, I hope they don't return.

I'm not a fan of the dedicated side quest zones that previous ME games had where you were dropped into a map, killed everything to complete side quest and you couldn't return to the place.

Allow multiple side Quests to connect to each other.

Killing Darius is always fun, I agree. His ridiculousness makes that sidequest worth it.

My personal favorite is UNC: Major Kyle. I like how it involves one of  Shepard's optional backgrounds, and I like the variety I have in handling the situation.

I'm currently replaying DAO.. and Denerim is a cool hub of sidequests.. I like most of these. And I liked quite a few in DA2 as well.. especially since some of the plots developed over multiple Acts (like Last Sacrifice or the Bonepit).
