I am pretty sure it has something to do with the semen under uv light looking puddles on the ground.   Is it just don't step on it?  Or don't get close to it?   Don't move away from it after you step on it?   Don't look at it, it is all in my mind?   It seems like the randomly I would die or get hurt if I am in close range a few seconds after the Saarebus dies.

As a general rule...all of the above, i.e., don't touch the suspicious puddles.

There are two things you need to look for.  After it jumps away there is a delayed circle of joy that appears on the ground and the other thing you mentioned....

If you are standing on anything that isn't the environment......that's bad......look down once in a while :P

Venatori mage's backward zap does similar stuff. Just don't step on it or don't get too close.

The Venatori one was easy to avoid because I just don't chase them and circle around.   I am going to go back and look at the video capture.  Because I am sure that I did not step on the "suspicious" puddle this morning.   Maybe the puddle markings are not exact?   I was trying to step in between the cracks.. maybe there is no crack just an illusion of the a crack? :P

I think it's constant spirit damage from Saarebus that's mysteriously hurting/killing you even after he dies. If I'm going to face tank him with my warriors I'll drink a spirit resistance potion when available. It helps to decrease the damage to 1
Also the qunari shield guys will take tons of your health away when they die, sometimes instantly killing anyone nearby...Is this also a bug? If playing melee characters how can it be avoided?

Regarding Saarebas dot, I haven't seen a reliable visual indicator. Purple puddles do spike spirit damage, and don't seem to apply a dot. That weird spirit damage attack that they aim at you as you run around doesn't seem to apply the dot. The green knockdown also does spike damage. As far as I can tell, the dot is randomly applied when you're in melee range. Of course, I could be wrong, needs more testing/consensus. Like all enemy dots in this game, it is bugged as hell and will randomly apply 5 times per "tick" for insane damage.

The shield douche shieldsplosion is almost as annoying. When they're alive, they shields start flashing turquoise, more and more rapidly each time they block, until after 5 blocks (iirc) it discharges with no visual indication for big damage. Basically, if their shields are flashing rapidly, don't attack from the front. The problem is that sometimes when they die, it also randomly proc, and can and will happily OHKO you.

Of course, all of this is intentional. Everything in DAIMP is intentional, especially when I use charging bull and fall off the edge of the bridge in FC.

I am beginning to think the developers designed this after they read Hunger Game book 2.

It's not the puddles. I'm fairly certain that the Saarebas (enemy) occasionally casts Curse of Shokasit (opener version, but Spirit damage type). If your HP is full, you'll survive. If not, heal or die.

Are you sure? I only ever took the spirit damage, that stacked like crazy like the other mines, when standing in those puddles.

I am very positive it is those puddles that cause the damage, just Saarebas' own version of the mines, in spirit damage.
If you have proof otherwise though I won't combate that too hard

The shield-splosion is a little excessive. It instakills me all the time even when I run away before it goes off. I remember one time i was in THREATENING and it hit me (top tier armor, full armor/dmg reduction passives on templar) for over 250 when literally everything else hits for 1.

Yeah.  That shield crap is massively stupid.

Okay so I finally got to watch the video.  I had my right toes in the puddle. :(   So, first it does like 75 spirit damage about twice a second when the Saarebus was still alive.   About 2 seconds after it dies, and I was walking toward another target, it hit me for 270 x 5 twice every second until I was on my knees.

Probably exploding nug if you put TTD on it and follow it around for a while.

The puddles do do a lot of damage, but it stops when you leave the puddle. I don't have a video of the Curse effect, but it looks like a forked lightning when he casts it and applies Spirit DOT. I'll try to capture an example when I can.

Good point. Now I have to try it with Lego against nugs :D

How exactly does the Saarebas dot kill things?

Almost as efficiently as Venatrolli Mage electric slides.

I took a video the other night where I got hit for 1541 damage in one second on perilous. Found my hunter inspecting the fine tevinter tile until the rest of my team (all with guardian spirit) picked me back up.

1541 in one second? Seems legit.

was it 1541 flashes once or

190 190 190 190 (first hit)

190 190 190 190 (second hit)

Mine was like that in NM... except it was about 250 damage.  It was about 2000+ damage in one second on my fully defensive mode Lego.  He got all the damage reduction passive and both +50% guard passive.  Killed in one second with full guard after the Saarebus is already dead for 2 seconds..
