I am reminded of a great quote from Varric in banter with Solas, regarding literature and storytelling:

"Dwarves write how they want things to be. Humans write to figure out how things are."

Some might prefer the former, some might prefer the latter, other, a mixture. I think we can all have our preferences without insulting each other.

So far I'd say Dragon Age is in the latter category. I like it this way, because the oppression I see "on the page" helps me make sense of the oppression I see in life. To give a rather personal example, playing a Dalish elf helped me contextualize my feelings when our synagogue's preschool was desecrated by swastikas and horrible phrases I won't repeat here. It also contextualizes the depth of my compassion for others who suffer worse than I do. The struggle, and the will to continue to struggle even in the face of so much failure, is one reason why Dragon Age means so much to me.

The Architect is an even worse rape abomination than the rest of the darkspawn. If you're actually arguing that the darkspawn aren't evil but humans are, in this setting, you're ridding a kind of crazy train I don't want to be within 100 feet of at any point.

And if you're going to start saying that Genitivi - and by extension, the developers - are making false accounts to slander the Dalish then, again, you're full up on a crazy train none of us want to get on in any way.

Generally, we're back to your apparent endorsement of racism. The people who support the Alienages - which aren't all the same, mind you - range from Rivani to Free Marchers to Fereldans and Orlesians. Fereldans had nothing to do with what Tevinter did to the elves. In fact, their predecessors were busy being massacred and enslaved by Tevinter.

Orlais specifically had a war with the Dales that it won, but that has nothing to do with what Tevinter did to the elves.

The Architect heals dwarves and Wardens that happen to get lost in the Deep Roads and then helps them get back to the surface, unharmed. (See A Different Darkspawn, Codex of DA: Inquisition obtained during Vallamar quest, the one with Bianca Davri).

Please do not judge the character so harshly.  Is he hazardous because of his intelligence? Yes. Does that make him evil? Is a being that strives for the preservation of life at his own risk evil?

Try to see the other side of him. We all know his plans pose a...situation that cannot be easily solved, since it can either evolve into a serious threat or pose a social problem for the future (coexistence with darkspawn). That does not mean he deserves to be considered a vile abomination.

The Mother was an abomination, as well as all the darkspawn that followed her. They willingly tricked, tortured and killed innocents. The Architect? A darkspawn that protects people from the malice and belligerence of other darkspawn? Who fully understands the threat his kind poses to every living thing in Thedas and teaches the darkspawn to stay away from humans and to be peaceful? A rape abomination? Really?

Would not of been impossible to design the game slightly different. The choice shouldn't be been between imminent destruction and supporting bad system, there is just literally no reason for the Elvish experience in DA to be what it is at all, or even Elves to even be in the game.

What's your point? Bio could have designed the game world in all kinds of different ways, yep. But they didn't. They designed it this way.

Alright people. I guess we can all agree that Asellus 112, Alan C9 plus one or two people only came here to troll members who were discussing the subject normally.

Can we block them or simply ignore them from now on? Thanks, folks.

ADDENDUM

I've placed both members mentioned above in my Ignore List.

I strongly suggest other members do the same, before the discussion escalates to sheer fighting and a Mod decides to intervene.

As I recall the default ending is "Elf who sacrifices herself"

I would have thought it was Cousland based off sheer numbers.

I like Female City Elf better, but I did Cousland for Witch Hunt after I did City Elf just because I think he works better with it than Male Circle Mage.

His post included nothing reportable or remotely warranting an insult to his character. Whatever grave offense you think he made, you misunderstood.

I'm not saying no one can criticize the supposed "goody-good" but that's not true you descended into ad-hominem of a particularly malicious sort.

You want to rip Elves in DA, defend the world? Go for it!

I tried to be all kumbayah, I guess it was too little too late to deescalate. I'd love for this discussion to get back on track, it was interesting.

Much of it wasn't contentious, but certain parts will, please read at least my most recent posts before getting involved in something you don't understand clearly, thank you.

Please at least read the most recent one, right now you are threatening a resolution of sorts.

If you take the use of "human" or "elf" alone to indicate some kind of excess racial categorization and... well... I don't want to get into that.

That's the very essence of my issue. There isn't a universal "elf" culture, or "human" culture in DA. What we have are a multitude of cultures, with the usual fantasy issue that the writers invent a variety of unique cultures for the humans and give non-humans 1 or 2 stock cultures. Notionally, the Dalish could have as rich and varied a culture as the humans, with each clan being different. But that isn't very fleshed out.

In any event, when we do have actual cultures that are responsible - uniquely, entirely and solely - for this like genocide, using the general group moniker is exactly the issue. It's what happens IRL, with our very toxic modern political rhetoric target general group membership rather than culture (by talking about, for example, a shared religion at a general level - even if isn't the right sect - instead of culture, country or ideology).

So would I. There's still so much that can be discussed. Especially after the revelation that Fen'Harel is about to lift the Veil and the Evanuris could be released!  :o

Maybe, there are problems with Dragon Age in general?

That doesn't equate to hatreds or automatically, there is a great deal of hatred by various humans, organizations, and at least implied state policies against Elves solely on the basis that they are Elvish.

I never quite grasped how that would work, apart from Solas basically saying "Don't worry bro, I got this one." Which given how bad he's been at plans, doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

You have, in the past page and a half, called In Exile a "terrible person," a "troll," and a "tin brain."

He has demonstrated none of this characteristics, and has stooped to none of the name calling that you have, and yet you have the temerity to suggest he's the one in the wrong. Your tactics are appalling.

Completely off topic, although this thread is currently spiraling out of control anyway,  but Lady Artifice, you have the most lovely avatars.

I especially like this current one of yours, and also the one with pink hair.

That's what makes it so scary.

The last time he "had a plan", he ended up nuking a temple and punching a hole in the sky. Before that one, he effectively lobotomized his entire race. The surest sign of an oncoming apocalypse in the DA setting is Solas nee Fen'Harel saying "Dude... I got this."

Then maybe your problem is with DRAGON AGE.

Not me, for perhaps just alluding to it. You are right, Dragon Age refers to Elves and Humans and Dwarves, but firstly, that just is a form of categorization, nothing more nothing less.

Right. The setting is chock-full of racism.

I liked the one you had with the pink hair a while back as well. :)

It was poofy, as I recall.
