Do the books/comics happen?

Or are they just completely ignored? If certain conditions are met in the game is there some kind of trigger/flag that goes into the database/keep or something. If these conditions are met, then Asunder happens, if these conditions are met, then 'Those Who Speak Happens' and they are somehow acknowledged in the games

Take the Dark Horse comics for example. I imagine the conditions must be something likes this

*Alistair must be king of Ferelden

*Sten is recruited and his sword is returned

*Isabella stays with Hawke

*More stuff I can't currently think of

If those conditions are met then that means King Alistair, Varric and Isabella went on a crazy adventure together. During the Alistair cameo in Inquisition with Varric in my party I was hoping there would a least be a little nod that Alistair and Varric knew each other. But there was none. So are the books/comics taken into account in the games? Or are they just meaningless?

Alistair: Grand Enchanter. Imagine how suprised I was to learn you'd given Redcliffe Castle away to a Tevinter Magister

Varric: *Says something Varric*

Alistair: Varric! Hey, how you- Oh right, sorry, where was I now? Right. Especially since I'm fairly sure........

They happened - Varric has banter with Bull where he refers to meeting the new Arishok, and you can get Cole to recite the whole plot of Asunder to you. (In a confusing, Cole appropriate sort of way.)

I imagine they wanted to keep the references vague so that people who hadn't read them wouldn't be confused, and so they could avoid addressing how things unfolded differently depending on differences in your world state. (For example, I know you still get the reference to the comics if Alistair is a Grey Warden instead of king, and Cole conspicuously avoids mentioning either Wynne or Shale.)

Sten's sword isn't necessarily returned. Nothing stopping him from finding it himself. But it assumes you at least recruited him.

That's assuming a lot about Isabela too. She could still be friends with Varric either way. The comic skips any details with Hawke. Even if she runs, Varric still keeps up with her in DAI.

There seems to be an implication that a version of these events occurred, even if the same conditions don't exist in all playthroughs - maybe a Warden Alistair goes off instead of King Alistair, maybe Bann Teagan asks the Alistair he pulled out of the Hanged Man to investigate to give him a sense of purpose, maybe the spirit who spared Wynne in the tower was drawn towards Rhys because of his blood tie to her and was there to save Evangeline... These events still happen, just not quite in the same manner as were presented in the book/comic because of different people involved.

There's no particular reason why another mage couldn't fill Wynne's role in Asunder. Some things would need to change, but ...

I thought Cole DID talk about Wynne. He talks about 'Rhys' mother' for sure and I thought it was in reference to her sacrifice in the book?
