Right now I'm thinking most of the townspeople are doomed. It's taking my forces too long to deal with the enemy soldiers, and meantime they're all stuck beneath beams and x seems to do nothing to free them. The one in the tavern in particular. i'll just save the ones I can and wish the rest the best.

How do you rescue the survivors on Haven? My first go around, it took my warriors some time to rescue the blacksmith, and I lost two others shortly after i entered the gate.
Also, what party composition is best for the rescue, and is it possible to lower the difficulty after starting the game. I might need to move it to Casual to rescue all of them.
Finally, what level is recommended for this quest. I tried at 8, but it might be better at 10-11.
Yes, you can lower difficulty at any non-combat time, but don't. You don't need too. You just need to be quick. See below.
It can be done on level 7 fairly routinely, on Nightmare. There is a reason the War Table gives you the Bee Grenade recipe so early. Upgrade the hell out of it and use it. Level 8 should be easy. Level 10-11 is way over leveled.
A rogue archer with Stealth and Explosive Arrow is best. Doesn't have to be your IQ. Sera, Varric or Cole can do it. Next best is an IQ with Charging Bull. Next best is an IQ with Fade Step and Mind Blast. The rest of the party doesn't matter, as long as they are strong enough to destroy enemies quickly. IF they fight, they need to fight effectively.
Right now I'm thinking most of the townspeople are doomed. It's taking my forces too long to deal with the enemy soldiers,...
Then don't. At least not personally.
I've been able to save everyone, but the key is to only fight the enemies that you have to.
Control a character that either has Stealth or Charging Bull or Fade Step. Delegate your tank, say it is Cass, to do the fighting. Set Cass to Follow Cass. Set the other two in the party to Follow Cass. Now you (the character you are controlling) are an independent rescue operative. The rest of the party should focus on the enemy mobs and not follow you around, leaving you free to run around rescuing people. Again "you" might be Sera, Varric, Cole, IB, Viv, whoever.
Start with the blacksmith Harritt. You don't really save him, you save his tools.
MAKE A SAVE AFTER EACH RESCUE THAT FOLLOWS (except for Flissa, make the save before, because there is no time after)! That will give you a do-over if you mess up.
Next is Lysette on the right, before entering Haven proper. Here you have to fight, that's how you rescue her. Dispatch all of the enemies as quickly as possible.
Then move on to Seggrit in the burning house to the left. This one takes the longest, so be quick. Up, over, in, Interact, then bash the door down with auto-attacks, Explosive Shot, Charging Bull, or Mind Blast. If you have Charging Bull, you can skip the up and over bit and just charge into the door from the outside.
Flissa is next in the tavern. Use your fast ability (Fade Step, etc.) to get in there quickly. A soon as you rescue her, a timer starts for Adan and Minaeve, SO MOVE FAST!.
Use the fast ability again to get to Adan + Minaeve quickly. Get up those stairs as quickly as possible. Jump on the pile of explosives close enough to reach both. Rescue the one on the right first, closest to the burning "fuse" on the ground. The split second the interact with the first is done, start the second. As long as both are rescued, it doesn't matter if the explosion happens.
Threnn is last. This one requires combat as well. Just kill them all quickly.

Turning the difficulty down did help with the soldiers, but I simply wasn't able to free the citizens using the x button. I'll try to experiment using some of the other buttons-R1 and some others-but i was unable to free anyone other than the blacksmith and Lysette with this run.It could have been a PS3 glitch.
I did figure out having one character to rescue was best strategy, but was unable to free those under beams and such.
I will do further experimentations to see if I can increase the number I save-Threnn seems most likely at this point unless i can figure workaround for the issue with x button. If it's just a matter of breaking down the door, I might be able to save Seggrit as well.
I'll redo and see if i can save more with a second try at Haven rescue.

Thanks for the post though-it will help for future playthroughs.
It might be a glitch, but more likely, you just aren't close enough or looking at the target. If you go into Tactical, you should be able to do the Interact action more easily, even from a distance. Your character will move to the right spot. Plus, it pauses time, so you have more time to think about your next move.

There's not an option to follow specific party members like Cassandra on Ps3, just controlled characters. example-follow controlled character. It'll complicate things a little.

Are you sure? I know PS3 can't do the advanced DLC, but I had never heard about not being able to set the AI to Follow a specific character. There's not an option to follow specific party members like Cassandra on Ps3, just controlled characters. example-follow controlled character. Can you not set the behavior as in this video? Start at 7:44. But don't follow in the instructions in the video, it's just an example of how to change the following name to a character.

Ah-my bad-I didn't know you could change from controlled character.
The bees only seem to work for the PC, or that option only shows for PC. I couldn't get it to show for Varric. I'll do research later to see if similar issue as tactics.
Finally, I figured out the button x issue. You have to press x once and keep it held down until the character is released, not press x repeatedly like I had been doing. It's worked for the first 3, now if only I can beat the timer and rescue the two next to the explosives.
I was unable to save Minaeve after 3 tries, and I thought I had her that last try. I released her, but the fire took her out. I kept getting the message-you cannot save during attack, so i was unable to save after each rescue. I'll accept one death over losing half the village the time before.

Saving them all is a bit of a trick. I can only do it if I have an Inferno mage and Cassandra. Use Immolate two times on the boxes to get Harrit's door open for him. Then take control of Cassandra. Make sure everyone else is set to follow your Inquisitor, and he/she is set to Defend Self. Let the cutscene run when you enter the gate.
Remember you are controlling Cassandra now. First run to the tavern - IGNORE ALL RED TEMPLARS OR VENATORI, they won't chase you. Save Felicity, No run to Adan and Minaeve, save Minave then jump over the jars to save Adan. Run up in front of the Chantry, Hit one of those red Templars or Veneatori once, just get them fighting and the rest of your party on them, helping the requisition girl. Take Cassandra and run save Segrit. Use payback Strike to open doors on Cassandra, Only need that to get Segrit out alive.
As soon as he is saved, switch back to your Inquisitor, finish the fights, go back around haven and kill and loot all enemies, then go to inside the Chantry. Voila, you saved them all and, shouldn't loose any part members doing it since the other three still work as a team with your Inquisitor under AI control.
If your Inquisitor is not a mage, Make sure Solas has Immolate, 1 point for barrier and, the rest on ice spells. You can respec him at Skyhold and get rid of Immolate and go with all Ice if you want but, Immolate is the fastest box/crate remover there is. (It has no cooldown when firing at crates.)
Cassandra moves a hair faster in combat than others so, that's why she can save everyone. Milliseconds matter on that one. ![]()

Again, I have to ask, are you sure? Bee Grenades are a fundamental item. I just can't believe that they would not be available on PS3.
You get them as follows:
1. Recruit Sera
2. This unlocks a War Table mission: Red Jenny: Inquisition Needs Beeees!
3. Complete the mission. The reward is the Recipe for Jar of Bees grenades
4. Go Adan's house in Haven and go to the potion table to equip the grenades in the second or third "potion" slot of characters
5. (Optional, but recommended) Go to the potion upgrade table and upgrade the grenades. You may need some ingredients that you might not have yet.

PC for personal character, not personal computer. They're on PS3, but they only show for the Inquisitor and he was the one to use them. It's an issue I'll see if i can see the bees to show for the other characters. It's probably something simple that I'm missing, like not having equipped Varric with the bees.
The thing that really irritated me was I was unable to save data after I rescued someone. I got the message "cannot save during battle' and I could only save before I rescued everyone and after.
I'll try Cassandra next time. I might be able to save them all using her.

Grenades can be equipped by any character. I can't find a PS3/PS4 video that shows how to equip grenades, try the "Map Potion" button when sticked over the slot in the circle.

Equip party with the best armor and weapons your blueprints and metals/leathers/cloths allow. Have a warrior with you and shied bash or kick in blocked doors. Start at black smith, go up hang a right , battle the guys on the path save one person, continue up the path enter bar find Flissa, once saved head out and up to where Adan's apothecary is, outside by the burning jars is Adan on one side and what's her face by Dorians cabin door, once those two are up, head back toward the main gate hang right go up, see a cabin on fire with closed door, shield bash/kick door in find Segritt, head up to Chantry where just outside is Threnn battling a group of RT.
Only once have I been able to save them all, I'm either too late for Flissa or one of the two by Adan's shop.

Another route to rescue people is this: Lysette to seggrit to threin to adan and the researcher and finally felissa. This path always gets me everyone alive since the timer starts when you get near one of them.

Out of curiousity, do you run the risk of the ceiling beam falling on Felissa if you do her last. I had that happen when I took too long rescuing her.

Nope since the timer on ceiling falling on her starts when you get near her. My path i follow my route exactly and do not deviate and it gets me all of them alive everytime.

Just noticed I have some operations.quests like Apostates in Witchwood to do first, so I'll work on those at minimum before continuing.
It is doable at level 8 as I did it last night but it is quite challenging I've never managed to get all the companions though in any of my playthroughs but I managed 4 of them last night. Currently my games stuck at the camp cutscene between Haven and Skyhold (where evreyone starts singing) and the story won't progress atm so I'm having to reinstall the game as I can't figure out why it's not playing ball but hopefully i can fix it and continue though. I thought it might be because of the mods I had installed but the mods appear to be working fine so I think it's the game itself being troublesome.

Again, the key is to not fight the Venatori. Or at least, whoever you are controlling, preferably a rogue with Stealth, need not fight.
When I bother at all, I rescue all of the Haven folks every time, where the only problem I have is Adan/Minaeve. If I don't position myself just right or don't click on Interact quick enough, I might lose one of them. Then I reload from save and try again, but usually only have to do that once, if at all.
Pay attention to the timer-start warning. Someone in the party will say something about someone needing rescue. I'm not sure if the party proximity or only the controlled character proximity is what starts the timer. If party proximity, the stupid Venatori mob near Flissa could be a problem, since the party goes that way while I go to Seggrit. Zeypher's sequence may be better in that it avoids that problem -- definitely worth a try.

This is the ideal party composition in my opinion:
Tank warrior
Support mage
Damage dealer mage who takes only barrier from spirit tree and nothing else
Ranged rogue
I was able to beat this on nightmare and when I sided with mages. In your heart shall burn is a bit harder when you side with mages because in my experience the unspeced party at the time struggles a lot more versus tough red Templars than glass cannon type Venatori.

Personally I don't mind if I don't get them all anyway plus I can be a little slow on the buttons so it would be hard for me to get everyone anyway I think so I' mnot that bothered if I don't get 100% the fact i can get the majority is good enough for me especially given how tough gaming can be when your playing with just 1 hand on the controls. TBH I surprise myself sometimes and did when I managed 4 the first time because I never worried about taking the challenge on in my first few playthroughs I just went to the chantry when the dragon attacked. It's only in my more recent playthrough's I've tried to save some people. Fortunately yesterday it was one of my better ones as I nearly managed 5.
