During this one playthrough I was building my friendship with Dorian, and he'd just said something really nice to me. I think I'd just done some war table missions for him one after the other by cheating the clock. So right after that I tried Alexius and on a whim decided to make him tranquil. I see the "Dorian Greatly Disapproves" float on the screen, and I go to see him, and it's the crisis conversation where he threatens to leave! It was such whiplash and a little funny, but I still reloaded.

I've never had a companion threaten to leave, because I'm too much of a goody two-shoes.

This thread has made me wonder which companions won't leave, no matter their approval rating. Can Iron Bull leave due to low approval?

I've never managed to get Sera, Iron Bull, Vivienne, Varric, Solas or, Cassandra to walk out voluntarily. Sera can be kicked out at any time. Blackwall will walk out or can leave him in prison. Cole will leave pretty easily actually. Dorian will leave but, not too easily.

I assume that's how it's meant to be. Six that will not leave, one of those you can kick out and three that will leave.

You can also dismiss Blackwall at Adamant when you banish the Wardens.

I've seen Youtube clips of the scenes that play when Cassandra, Varric, Solas, Vivienne or Sera have very low approval. I can't find such a scene for Iron Bull, which was why I was asking.

I doubt you can kick him out since in a way he is sent by the Ben Hassarath, perhaps low approval for him comes out in the form of betrayal in Trespasser

If I had to guess I'd say you chose the mage path, and maybe chose to conscript the mages? That will put you at -20 approval automatically with Cole. Also, did you have the Fair-Weather Friends trial on? Cole will leave you instantly upon reaching Skyhold if the previous all occurred.

As for your question, nope, never had anyone leave without meta-gaming to make it happen.

Iron Bull doesn't have a disapproval conversation unlike all other companions. Below is a video showing all of them.

That's what I'm thinking. Iron Bull is there under orders, not because he likes the Inquisitor. Depending on how you look at things, what happens in Trespasser may be the direct result of his disapproval. He isn't sending home glowing reports (No "They think you're doing good work" here), so his superiors don't trust you enough to involve you in the dreadnaught run. Bull's personal quest, Demands of the Qun, will never come up, Bull stays loyal to the Qun, and we all know how that ends. So I guess you might say that he quits eventually...

I actually chose to ally with the templars which I think leads to disapproval as well. I did have Fair-Weather friends on but he didn't leave me until after the ball. I didn't think it was that easy to get him to leave until everyone started commenting about it.

Right. Allying with the templars earns -20 approval from him, or -40 with Fair-Weather Friends on. Recruiting him on the templar path gives +20, so you were at -20 by the time you reached Skyhold. I ...think... at -30 he leaves, so based on what you've said it's obvious you made a choice with Orlais that Cole greatly disapproved of, which would be doubled thanks to Fair-Weather Friends. Him leaving with the trial on is far less surprising than without it.

Never had anyone get dangerously low approval until I played my very Dalish anti chantry elf. Cassandra was not her friend after I told her the chantry was rubbish and to forget about being Devine.

That video was just fascinating -- thanks for sharing it! It's a great reminder of how rich and individual this game experience can be for each of us, based on who our Inquisitors are.

But it also weirdly upset me! I love these characters and it's kind of awful to see them all so hurt and betrayed. Especially poor Dorian and little Sera -- for some reason poor Sera just killed me there (she doesn't want to care, but she does, and the fact that the Inquisitor can actually throw her out is just so sad to me). Oh, and Cole. I adore Cole, so seeing him so angry... gah.

I kind of enjoyed the scenes with Vivienne and Solas though. They're both stronger and colder in their way, so it feels like they can give back to a more villainous Inquisitor. The others just seem betrayed and hurt.

As for Bull, I absolutely agree with those who feel that if we show zero loyalty to him, never befriend him, etc., that this plays out kind of brilliantly in "Trespasser." Heartbreaking, but realistic and perfectly in-character.

But this is the only way I'll ever see this stuff. Even if my Inquisitors don't always agree, they do love their Companions and want their approval.

I just wanted to hug all the companions after each of those scenes. Now I need to go look at dancing kittens or baby goats or something.

Punching Dorian WTF that made my heart hurt. :( I watched the video all the way up to Solas, lol, I couldn't do it, especially since I know you can punch him too.

As difficult as that was to watch at times, it was interesting to see different sides of their personalities. I certainly won't be seeing any of those scenes in my game, lol. My canon Inquisitor and Sera are not friends, but other then that, I've always been friends with my peeps, even Vivienne.

Never, but Sera has been close to leave with my latest Lavellan, cause I played her as a very "elfy pro magic" dalish... Sera just came and told me I was being a ****** for killing Celene and putting Briala on the throne lol.

Since that moment I lied to Sera all the time and I headcanoned that my Lavellan considered Sera as a little stupid child she could play with when she wanted to unwind and do stupid things, and that she considered Sera too stupid to discuss more important things with her.

For instance when I came back from breaking up with Solas she asked me about the vallaslin and then said "it's all lies anyway, nobody knows about real elves" and I imagined my Lavellan thinking "whats the point of even discussing this with you..?" and replied "indeed".

In the end by doing this I got her cookies roof scene so.. but she is the only character I have to blatantly lie to to keep her with me -.-

Oh man, in my first playthrough of DA2 Isabela ran off and never came back, and then I had to light my boyfriend on fire in the Gallows because his friendship/rivalry was stuck in neutral. Oh, and I told Anders to GTFO when he tried to "help" after stabbing me in the back. SAD PLAYTHROUGH WAS SAD.

Hasn't happened in DAI, though.

You would have hated my last playthrough: Elly Trevelyan aka Vivienne 2.0.  It was the darkest playthrough I've ever done. Imprison the mages, Blackwall left, Cole and Sera were kicked out, Solas and Dorian were punched, Cassandra got drunk, and even Varric didn't like me. I was BFFs with Vivienne though and chummy with Iron Bull ...until killing him in Trespasser. And Vivienne became divine; getting those mages back in their cages. Yup, dark times.

lol I actually enjoyed those scenes where you can punch Solas and Dorian. It's partially because they're not among my favorite characters. And I love that drunk scene with Cassandra even though I like her. But kicking Sera out for example after her personal quest was very hard, and what Cole says when you tell him to leave Skyhold... Eh, you've probably not seen it. Basically he acknowledges that he knows he can help, but they'll not accept his help because of their fear and anger influenced by all the problems the Inquisition must face, which makes him a problem too in their eyes. And so he leaves to remove one problem. Very sad.

Well Blackwall "left" me by never being retrieved from the dungeon before his execution. My main Inquisitor eventually decided he couldn't bring himself to deny justice to his victims.

Whoa, seriously how do you get Varric to dislike you! That was one thing I've never been able to do. That actually sounds like an interesting playthrough though. Did you romance anybody in that one?

You get Varric to dislike you by avoiding destroying the red lyrium, choosing "I'll do it for my own power" during the Inquisitor speech, siding with Cassandra in their confrontation about Hawke at Skyhold, and letting Hawke die in the fade. He also greatly disapproved strangely when in that Solas-punching scene I said "the qunari have a point" regarding leashing the mages; even though he wasn't in the room.

I romanced Cullen, which was made easy by him not having an approval meter. It's funny how he was oblivious to me effectively being a tyrant; especially in war table missions.

Depending on the type of inquisitor I'm playing... I've had everyone except for my lover hate me (Dorian at the time. Snarky, spoiled, gorgeous men. Best couple ever) and had both Cole and Blackwall leave and punched Solas and made Cassandra drink.

Good playthrough that! More often than not Blackwall leaves, but I don't like him anyways.

I did quests in a certain order to keep Cole on, since he gave me a warning.
