There were enemies immune to mana clash. The Architect, for instance.

I'm not so sure. If it is, that's a really weird angle. Is it in the air, close to the camera?

Pretty sure its not actually part of the scene, but slapped on top of it.

I can't recall the Architect battle, honestly. I haven't played DA:A a lot. The mages in DA:O were not, though. Some enemies that probably should have been immune weren't - e.g. Revenants.

Most boss enemies in Awakening were immune.

It's possible. By that point I wasn't using Mana Clash against bosses, because there were better spells. I honestly can't recall the game well, beyond saying that I found it even easier than DA:O.

Yeah, it's true, they're fairly monstrous. To be honest, I would have liked it better if they were more recognizably human ingame, because this just makes them seem like darkspawn. On the other hand, since they decided to take this route, they should have shown us some close-ups of them in cutscenes, because people can easily miss their appearance. Which was a common problem in DA:I overall.

Also, I was referring mostly to the one on the bottom with the enormous under-bite :P

I was thinking that the Red Templars on this cover looked like the DAI hurlocks and ghouls. But as you say, it's really hard to get a close up of any of the enemies in game unless fiddling with the tac cam.

The standard spell in DAO is manaclash. The result is a dead mage. The sole challange was nightmare because enemy got a set spell failure chance. So it became necessary to lair on multiple mana clashes.

But otherwise mages were worthless in DAO, and if by some miracle they dodged 3 mana clashes a fireball x3 combo would obliterate the encounter.

I dunno, I just never used mana clash since it was so OP. I think it's ignoring the entire magic system in DAO if you just spam mana clash or fireball and then complain that mages are too powerful, or useless without those two spells. That's only one way to use mages and IMO not a fun method. I liked using them for buffs and debuffs and the crushing prison effects. I'm not the most strategic player, but I found most of the very damaging spells were easy to interrupt before completion. Darned blue ball mages.

I'm not complaining mages are too powerless, or useless without those spells. I'm saying that enemy mages are not threatening. I think that its always possible to gimp yourself. For example, try playing DA2 on nightmare without class cross-class combos - difficult is an understatement.

Mm. Enemy mages in all of the games, then, or specific games?

I think my ideal would be using the Trials but with less health on enemies and PCs. More use of abilities and tactics and less of damage sponges and huge health pools. Barrier and guard are fine, but in fights like the darkspawn emissary where it breaks the mechanics and just keeps spamming barrier, that isn't fun.

This is apparently the cover for issue five?  It's what's on the page for the issue but given the lack of text I'm thinking it's likely a placeholder

This is the cover art before the title logo, blurbs, and publishing info are added.

DA:O, mostly. Really I just was responding to the post that said DA:O had the toughest mage enemies. I don't think that's true. I'd say it's something like DA2 > DA:I/DA:O.

I wonder if the Inquisitor DID read that letter and went

"To all Inquisition personnel, please keep flirting to a minimum in official reports, thank you."

One of the drawbacks (no pun intended) of 2D media :P

All of the creatures are pretty fantastically detailed, with monstrous faces and so on, but you can't really tell unless you get up close and personal with flycam; they were underutilized in the cinematics.

It's one of the common problems of DAI: a lot of detail and work went into it, but a significant portion of that detail was either easily missed or difficult to notice. Banter issues, modeling details, interesting environmental features in difficult to reach locations. Less important to me than the watered down narrative of open world, but still a shame for the people who put that work in and a waste of finite resources.

It's sadly true. I'll just add "what NPCs look like" to the list of things we don't really see properly.

We're better off without that one. Most NPCs did not have much care or attention. Several were borderline clones.

That's true. I ended up seeing the same face throughout Thedas.

Yet the Orlesian masks make this evident even without closeups. I like that Trespasser did add some clothing options, but a lot of the clothing was recycled anyway. Maybe now that they've implemented tinting they will be able to make clothes look more varied in the next game, even with limited templates.

It would be an interesting test of the character creator if generic NPCs in the next game were randomly assigned faces created randomly through the CC.

Thankfully, I don't think there was anything like the scene with the nobles in the keep at the end of Act 2 in Dragon Age II.

Maybe the weakened Veil in Kirkwall caused an increase in the birth of quintuplets?

There is one NPC -- this young Kurt Russell looking dude -- that I've seen in numerous places and cutscenes. He's one of the guys that Blackwall is coaching, and also in the scene where the PC is made the Inquisitor, and other places. Unfortunately, he really sticks out for me since I've made the mental association with Kurt Russell, so I can't unsee it, or the guy, when he appears.

Same dude who's left in charge of the Blades of Hessarian? He shows up all over. I think he shows up as a chevalier in Trespasser. I've seen him in Val Royeaux as well.

Yeah, I think of him as "the square headed guy".

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts has a reference to a foot soldier named Marius. The cylinder that the Inquisitor finds on the balcony documents Marius' presence in the servant's quarters. The servant's quarters also has a reference to this foot soldier. I think the game implied that he was Florienne's foot soldier, but this could have just been him infiltrating the Venatori at the Winter Palace.

So was Marius involved in the events at Halamshiral? Did he work behind the scenes to help foil the Venatori plot?
